What about Reggie Nelson?

I don't understand why everyone is so quick to draft a DE in the draft? The Redskins have a terrible past at drafting DE...too many disappointments! Plus the best DE (adams) will be gone by the time we draft.

If we draft Reggie Nelson, we will have a great duo of hard hitting ball hawking safteys! This will much improve the secondary, especially if we sign Clements who already knows Greg William's Defense! Then we can use Shawn Springs as a nickel back, and hopefully he wont get hurt!

As for the defensive line, we could go out and try to address that with free agency as well. I'm not really sure if cap room would enable us to sign both Clements and a marquee DE, but we could always just try and pick up someone who could fill the gap.

As far as LB, i think the LBs will be a lot better w/ Rocky stepping into the starting line up, and I also would like to see the skins try and use achuleta in his natural position as a roll player at WLB on some downs ( I wasn't a big fan of us signing him in the first place, because I knew he wasn't a great safety...just a good hitter, but I don't think we should cut him after one year, if GW is such the defensive mastermind, he will find a way to use Arch)

One more thing I wanted to point out is about the fact the skins tend to follow a trend of a high paying free agent off season, followed by a really low key minimal signing off season....wasn't our big off season last year?

you all tell me what you think!

i was looking forward to watching Nelson tonight, i would rather draft him than the DT from michigan, and if we solidify our secondary (draft nelson, pickup clements) we will be able to blitz more because GW will have faith in his secondary

I would be furious if we drafted a safety. You have to build in the trenches. We are hurting for defensive lineman. That is where we have to go, without a doubt. I would be overjoyed with Jamaal Anderson DE out of Arkansas, or we could trade down and get Amobi Okoye, DL from Louisville.

I know exactly what you mean. I want LaRon Landry. If we come away with a good D-lineman that will be cool, but I am nervous that it will remain the same as it did this season. Even when the dline came on strong running backs and WR's were doing well against us because our MLB couldn't stop a RB and our secondary was completely ineffective. I don't know. There are so many holes in our defense I don't know what to think anymore.

I'm going to say this:

Anyone that says their furious if we drafted a safety, or anyone saying they'd be furious if we drafted a defensive lineman needs to take a step back and think for a moment. We have a free agency period that begins in March. That is when we can begin to see the draft plan form up.

Until then, we're stabbing in the dark. Admittedly, Nelson is the only prospect I really like on the defensive side that is a "marquee" name. I'm not sold on Adams and especially not sold on Branch. That said, I'm not going to say I'll be upset if we draft DLine, we need help there.

But I'd rather see what we do in free agency before declaring how angry I'll be whichever way we go, if either. If we sign a dlineman, we very well may go Nelson and at that point that's a solid move. If we sign secondary help, we may go Adams or Branch and again, that's a solid move assuming that those guys are the studs people make them out to be...

I really don't think we need any more safeties, letalone use our 1st pick on one. We have quite a bit of depth there. We need D line. For years we have neglected D line in the draft and we need to get out of that habit. I'm not really sold on Gaines Adams...I don't think we need another 'tweener speed rusher. Personally I would rather go with Jamaal Anderson now that he has declared. He is a true 4-3 DE at 6'6 280 lbs. He had 13.5 sacks (1st in SEC) and 19.5 tackles for a loss (2nd in SEC) this year. A guy like him would be nice because he is a great pass rusher but also very good against the run. He would be a good addition to Carter on the end. Branch would also be a nice addition since we could really benefit from a huge 2 gap run stuffer in the middle.

Saying we shouldn't draft a defensive lineman because we have a poor draft history there is a little ridiculous. We have a poor draft history with receivers (Howard, Westbrook, Gardner, Jacobs), but it's been so damn long since we drafted a defensive lineman that I think we're due a "do-over".

The only thing that worries me about Nelson is that this is his only good season. This could just be a very good year in which everyone around him came together, and the whole team played well. Or maybe he could be for real, who knows. But I wouldnt want to take a risk on someone like that. I, personally, would rather go after Laron Landry of LSU, because I think he has more of an upside. But then again, that is just me.

rich owens ( huge bomb), kenard lang (bigger bomb)

Kenard Lang has had a nice long career - and not because he is a "bomb" He left D.C. because he did not want to play the DT position. Rich Owens was a 5th round pick in 1995 and had a good career with the Redskins and the Dolphins. I think he lead the Dolphins in sacks during Marino's last season.

Daniels and Wynn are that much better?

Not IMO...

A safety is a sexier pick than a d-linemen, I admit, so I see where you are coming from. None the less, we have young blood at the safety position (and as talented as ST has the capability to be, he is not ready to play next to a player even younger and less experienced then he is. I don't think he could handle being forced to be the more veteran of the two.) and the front 7 is looking like it could use a major injection of young talent.

A pleasant thought, but I don't think it's the right thing to do this year.

Shawn Springs at nickel?

I do not think that we will go with a safety with our first pick because we are not going to get rid of ny of the safties that we already have and that would cause a glut at that position. If we bring in Clements, him and Springs at corner will allow our safties to do more free-lancing i.e. blitzing and run support. Rogers should be the nickel.

:applause: There you go! That's exactly the right personnel to target, and for exactly the right rationale. Anderson is the perfect prototype DE for our system, and Branch exactly the type of run-stuffing, pocket-collapsing DT to complement Golston/Griffin (and free up AC). Either one would immediately, VASTLY transform our DL, and our overall "D"... then add the necessary upgrade and depth at CB through FA.

I don't know where else you draft a player other than in the draft....

Wrong! Virtually no underclassmen have declared yet. By the time they do, Gaines Adams will fall right in their lap.

we need help at actually all of the defensive positions

DT - Alan Branch

DE - Jaamal Anderson

CB - Leon Hall

S - LaRon Landry/Reggie Nelson

LB - Patrick Willis

those are the best fit guys for our D but we have to think about what we have on roster and who will need to sit in order to draft one of those guys

DE - Jaamal Anderson - would fill a huge void at DE where we lack the run stuffing and pass rushing specialist....Daniels would be the one to sit for him so its a big possibility we could draft him

DT - Alan Branch - would demand double team of him or griff and the other one would be single blocked and would free up our DE's....but we already have Griff, Big Joe and golston and montgomery.....would we really draft another DT when we have 4 and 2 are very young and one of which shows promise in his development???

CB - Leon Hall - was exposed somewhat in the bowl game but the argument can be made that it wasnt his coverage that was lacking it was the S but anyway he isnt the shut down corner that we need like Champ was so this might be another Rogers type player.....with the FA availablity of Clements and Samuel this might be a good place to us FA to fill that spot with Springs moving to S.....but will the FO see the same way???

S - AA can be used in only running situations and blitzing, Springs will be moving here but he is getting old and often hurt, Prioleau will be back but will he be fully recovered, Vincent is 36, Fox played good last season but is he future starting material for seasons to come....i see that S is the biggest need for our defense....selecting Landry or Nelson would give us the 08 season with two hard hitting ball hawking S and on of if not THE best young SS and FS combo.....but does the FO agree????

MLB - Lemar Marshall got exposed this season for the under sized MLB that he is but remember he did play good in the 04 #3 ranked D and the 05 #9 ranked D.....by drafting Patrick Willis we would have to replace Marshall and it would give us a very young, quick and talent LB corps with Willis, McIntosh and Washington but Willis would sit for the most part of the 07 season and would GW and JG give up on Marshall after one bad season when our front 4 play lacked???? Look how long we stuck with Brunell and even Marshall didnt play THAT bad!!!

In conclusion i agree that the best possibility for us would be to trade down into the 10-15 range and pick either Nelson or Landry, which ever is left and then pick up a 2nd round pick or MAYBE even another first rounder and take Okoye for DL help.......Jared Allen from KC is a FA and he had a monster season, along with London Fletcher from Buffalo...with 146 tackles and he knows the GW system....Asante Samuel with 11 picks this season would help our D who lacked the big pick at times.....Allen, Samuel, and Fletcher along with drafting Landry/Nelson would put this D in the place it needs to be

your thougts?
