Mark The Homer
I was looking directly at the sun for like 15 minutes today, I used to do that when I was a little kid. It was fun. It looked like there was a hole in the sky. When I got older and had my eyes checked, they always score better than 20/20 :whoknows:

In most cases your eyes do get better but I've read that after eclipses around 10% of people who look at the Sun have permanent damage. Here are some nice pics of what the Sun does to your eyes. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/specials/eclipse99/355066.stm
Mark The Homer
It occurs to me that staring at the sun during an eclipse may be more harmful than staring at the sun during a non-eclipse. That's because, at least for me, I remember doing it when the sun was fairly low in the sky. As I remember, the sun wasn't setting, but it was somewhat low, sort of inviting me to look at it. An eclipse on the other hand could very well be at high noon, so there's very little atmosphere to filter out the damaging rays. That may be how I escaped harm.
