Who dealt with TO better: Andy Reid or Bill Parcells?

During the preseason, a commonly repeated statement by Dallas fans is how Parcells wasn't Andy Reid and he wouldn't let TO walk all over the team.

After a season of controversies and dropped balls, all culminating in TO's sure release after the season, we can now reflect and wonder whose approach was better.

Bill Parcells: Ignored TO. Simply stated, that was the jist of his entire philosophy for dealing with the player. What did this do? For one, it alienated players in the lockerroom who seen no accountability in regard to what TO said and did. TO will not be ignored; we all know that. Did the fact that Parcells ignore him make TO lash out in other ways (ie suicide scare, throwing Bledsoe under bus, dropped passes, etc)?

Andy Reid: Reid dealt with TO like he deals with all his players; with respect. We now know that TO doesn't function like a normal human being and never recipricated the respect that Reid extended towards him. How much of TOs blowup had to do with Reid and the front office and how much of it was a personality conflict with McNabb?

In the end, TO never delivered either team to the promised land. In 2004, he was a model citizen and helped the Eagles make the Superbowl. In 2005, he was held accountable and helped ruin the season. In 2006, he was ignored and made sure he'd still have his hands all over what will turn out to be one of the most disappointing seasons in recent NFL history.

When history tells the TO story, I'm not so sure that Dallas looks any better than Philly. As a matter of fact, many will say Dallas looks much worse because they had the situation in Philly as their guide and blatantly ignored it.

too early to tell, I don't remember any real issues with TO in philly until season #2.

I agree, if they keep him next year will be real poison. You could see the start of it in training camp with his hammy pulls and all the attention that was paid to him by the press in Dallas, he fed on it. The longer the season went the more bizzare he got. Dallas's smartest move is to cut him and get him out of the locker room asap.

Understated!

One Parcells advantage is he never took ownership of TO. He always left us with the notion Jerry brought in TO without his blessing. This has allowed him to stick to his ignore "The Player" tactic. This tactic was used because normal Parcells practice would have been very similar to Reids. Parcells learned from Reid and probably used the only formula that could have worked with TO.

In the end Parcells got a productive year out of TO, which is what he wanted. Considering the injuries and the league leading dropped passes, TO's numbers could have been much larger.

Next year some inexperienced new coach will end out with TO and it will be UGLY!

I don't see TO being back with Dallas next season. Unless TO assists in bringing a SB victory to Dallas this season, neither coach will be said to have handled TO better due tothe fact that:

TO doesn't function like a normal human being .

In 2006, he was ignored and made sure he'd still have his hands all over what will turn out to be one of the most disappointing seasons in recent NFL history.

This statement is a little overboard. While Dallas was a chic pick by some to go to the SB this year, so were teams like Carolina, Seattle to repeat, even the Redskins, etc. I think Dallas was a consensus playoff pick but certainly not a consensus Super Bowl pick.

I think HeHateMe has it right when he says other factors have been a far greater contributor than TO to the Cowboys recent skid. They also skidded down the stretch last year......without TO. And last time I checked, they were still playing this weekend.

I think the whole TO thing "causing" the Eagles to go up in flames last yeat was also overboard. Even with TO being a model citizen and a healthy McNabb, the Eagles would've still limped to a 9-7 or 10-6 mark (as opposed to 13-3) last year because your defense was cracking.......something that carried over into this season before somehow getting corrected in the past month or so.

I would limp to a 9-7 record for the next 5 years if it meant I never had to experience 2005 again.

The real question is how Jerry Jones treated him -vs- Jeff Lurie.

But the trouble TO has stirred up in Dallas -vs- the trouble he stirred up in Philly is kind of like the difference between shooting a bullet and throwing one.

However, it doesn't surprise me to see you trying to convince everyone that Reid handled it better

This one isn't even close. Parcells has handled T.O. much better. However, I always felt like the Eagles ownership was more responsible for the TO debacle than Reid.

I always felt that T.O. was solely responsible for the T.O. debacle, since all the ownership or Reid ever expected was for him to act like an adult.

Neither one has done a particularly stellar job, although both Coaches had TO thrust upon them rather than actually wanting him.

That said, Parcells had the circus atmosphere from day 1 and did very little about it while Reid had TO on good behavior for a year or so before his typical meltdown.

Well, since it appears as though TO will be gone next year, unless he wins Dallas a Super Bowl, I'd have to go with Reid.

TO was actually very well-behaved in his first year in Philly and they got to the Super Bowl. Only getting the Cowboys further would give the edge to Parcells. In fact, only then would it be debateable since TO has "acted up" a lot more in Dallas than he did in Philly (year 1).

Have to say Parcells as well. I think TO actually caused harm in Philly that I think you can directly relate to play on the field. TO caused locker room grief and somewhat divided the team.

The pukes record is a result of the play of the team and coaches not because of anything TO said or did. I guess you can make the argument for the dropped passes, but you can say that about any WR in the league that dropped a pass that led to a team loss.

Too early to tell. Owens' first season in Philly was a breeze so we have to see how well Dallas does next year and how well Parcells handles him. One thing for sure- EVERYtime his team loses, TO will find someone to blame and make trouble for his team. Parcells handled all that very well this season.

Simply put, Parcells hasnt allowed T.O. to create sides in the locker room.

He hasnt torn apart the team and hasnt caused a division of the team.

That alone speaks volumes. Parcells ignores him and the team wisely follows.

Theres no other way to handle him. Unless and until he rips apart the team as he did in Philly, its a no brainer who has handled him better.

Although he was in Philly for one more season.

WB will try and convince himself otherwise, but you cant be surprised.

T.O. was a saint in Philly for 1 year, too.

At least Philly rode him to a Super Bowl. Will Dallas?

Yeah, but Philly had been a team that had made it to three straight NFCCGs the years before Owens got there, and he didn't even play in the playoffs following the 2004 season until the SB. It cracks me up that some sports reporters would always claim that if it wasn't for TO, the Eagles would've never gotten HFA throughout in '04.......uh, didn't they do just that in '02 and '03 without Owens?

You have to be kidding. T.O. was absolute disaster in philthy. Reid had no control whatsoever of what went on in '05 and our season ain't over yet.
