Giants' Pierce first to admit 'we've got our hands full'

By GEORGE O'GORMAN, Special to the Times

01/04/2007

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - The Eagles used 30 running plays when they beat the Giants, 36-22, Dec. 17.

Antonio Pierce remembers one of them most of all. It was the 28-yard run Brian Westbrook made up the gut of the Giants defense, right at the place where Pierce should have been. Westbrook's run, the Eagles' longest of that game, started a 22-point, fourth-quarter rally that led Philadelphia to its third straight victory in a win streak that now stands at five.

It's a streak that clinched the Eagles' fifth NFC East title in six years and earned them home field for Sunday's NFC wild-card game with Pierce and a Giants defense out to make amends for its poor showing not only against the Eagles four weeks ago, but during a late-season slump that led to six losses in eight games.

Pierce pointed the finger of blame for the Giants' loss that day squarely at himself, not only for the play Westbrook ran past him for the touchdown that put Philly up 21-16, but for the Eagles being able to run for 161 yards that day.

"Whenever a team rushes for 150 yards or more it falls on the linebackers," Pierce said after that December game. "They did a great job exploiting our defense. I don't have any problem saying I made mistakes."

Yesterday, as Pierce and the Giants got to work preparing for their second playoff game in two years, and Pierce's first ever, the talk was still on Philly's rushing offense. And how best to stop it.

Pierce made it sound like the Giants have no chance of halting an Eagles team that's the hottest in the NFC right now.

"They have good players over there," Pierce said. "They have a running back (Westbrook) that should be in the Pro Bowl. They've got a big offensive line, probably biggest in the league, I think.

"They make plays. It's one of those things where, not just me, but everybody on our defense has to play better. The way they (Eagles) have been playing, it doesn't seem anybody has been doing well against them the last five games.

"Hopefully we can go in there and slow these guys down somewhat."
