Ashley Fox | Giants jab at town that hates them back

By Ashley Fox

Inquirer Columnist

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. - OK, Philly. Try this on for size.

"That's the No. 1 city," New York Giants linebacker Antonio Pierce said yesterday. "I love that city. Brotherly love. They boo you. They flip you off. They moon you. They do everything to make you want to play football over there. Being an opponent of them, it's a great place to play. It's a great atmosphere. There's nothing like going to someone else's backyard and having no chance of winning."

Then there's this, from Plaxico Burress, who joined the Giants last season and on Sunday will play in his fifth Eagles-Giants game:

"It's always a physical game, a lot of trash talking. There's always a lot of hard hitting. We don't like each other. I noticed that, my first time last year playing against those guys. It's one of those games that each team gets jacked up for. Both cities don't like each other. Our fans don't like their fans, and their fans definitely don't like ours. It's just one of those games."

And so it began yesterday, the requisite jabbering that goes with a wild-card playoff game between heated divisional rivals. There is no love lost here - and for good reason. Remember Trent Cole's little kick in groin during the first game against the Giants? The Giants do.

It's also true that the Giants are a little touchy.

They are not happy with the underdog role bestowed on them by the Las Vegas oddsmakers. They aren't pleased that the popular opinion around the NFL is that the Eagles will win the game - and quite possibly handily. They are acutely aware, after having been shut out last year in a first-round playoff game - at home, no less - what can happen if they are embarrassed again.
