For the first half of the year, many of us (myself included) were screaming, whining, beyotching, etc. about how we could've landed Darren Howard for the same price tag we placed on Andre Carter. Carter seemed to explode the last few games of the season; it reminded me of when people labeled Philip Daniels a bust signing...and then everything changed after the Dallas rout.

Carter finished with 6 sacks - fairly pedestrian for a season, but rather impressive for the second half of a season. Darren Howard I believe ended up injured most of the year.

Soooo.....with the benefit of hindsight, if you could wave a magic wand and have Carter and Howard switch places, whom would you rather have going into next season?

I do like Andre and I am glad he is a Redskin. I never labeled him as a bust personally, but I do think we need to get him some help on the line. Speaking for myself, I would have used him more like Green Bay does with KGB - in a situational role as a pure pass rusher and to stay 'fresh'. He still struggles against the run IMO but the heart and effort is definitely there without question. With help, Andre Carter can be a real force as an every down DE for the Redskins and I have no reason to believe otherwise from what I have seen from him thus far. For me, getting Andre some help in the form of a mammoth DT is priority one.

Well i was one that was extremely disappionted in Carter. And rightfully so, the dude only had like 11 tackles and 1 sack midway through the season. But once he reassurted himself, he was really impressive. Especially in the fact that he didn't give up, but kept fighting. Because of that i would take Carter, hands down. Furthermore, i dont think he was horrible in the run game, though he's not that good. But he did make some plays for negative yardage. But like others have mentioned, he needs help behind him and on the interior. It would also work best if we can rotate him on mostly 2nd or 3rd down situations.

the one worry I have with Carter is this. Phillip Daniels exploded in the last 5 games of 2005, and just had a rather average to subpar season.

Carter has exploded in the 2nd half of 2006. Daniels was supposed to do better with Carter on the other side, but it did not happen. I'm not too sure what this means, just thought I'd point it out.

I think Andre's performance against the run has been questionable. It's hard to tell though, considering we have the worst linebacking corps in the NFL.

Who knows, with the right guy playing behind him, he might excel against the run :whoknows:

(as for the question, I'd still rather have Darren Howard. Although don't get me wrong, I'm very pleased with how Carter picked up his game thru the back half. Now he needs to build on that.)

I feel like we just can't win. We got a DE that can rush the passer based on the last several weeks. Then he gets destroyed in the run game. Having an undersized DE will do that and it's something we're going to have to address.

I dont know if I would say Carter is getting destroyed in the run game. He's played pretty well there I think. At least average for a pass rushing DE anyway. Its our linebackers and secondary that have been getting abused.

The Giants destroyed the left side last week. Then again, they did it in 2005 as well. Regardless, Carter was pretty much not even there in terms of stopping the run. As Zoony mentioned, perhaps this is more based on poor LB play (not filling the holes that Carter's presence creates). I hope so. The players make the defense and we've let too many go.

Unfortunately, the Giants game made our entire defense look bad. And just when we thought things were looking up after New Orleans...

Back on topic, I still like what Carter brings to the table...a legitimate chance of a pass rush while only sending the front four.

Andre Carter is a joke, he should only be in on passing downs thats it, he was getting pushed around all year against the run.

At least Howard has proven he can play all downs unlike Carter.

Sad but true. I don't think it's fair to Carter to leave him in there all the time, but what other options to the Skins have? Carter would be much better off in a rotation where he stays fresh and chases quarterbacks all day, rather than getting buried by massive tackles. The guy is undersized and has a bad back -- he won't last long as an every-down DE in the NFC East.

Sorry but 6 weeks does not a season make! He was getting abused for like the first 10 games and just because he had a little bit of a resurgence in the end of the season doesn't erase those first 10 games. I compare it to Daniels in 2005. Daniels was a bum for like 12 games, then got like 6 sacks in the last 4 games. Big deal! He still was crap for most of the year. I'm not saying that we should bench Carter or Daniels, but we should definately look to draft some young guys to come in and press them for playing time.

Is that good or bad? This reminds me of the Brunell thing all over again. If the guy is too injured to play good football, then we need to sit him down so that we can still have an effective line.

Andre Carter played very very well the last 6 or so weeks of the season. Hopefully he will be able to start next season the way he finished this one.

Ditto, I hope he starts out strong. Both AC and Howard would be nice bookends on our dee, but it won't happen.:helmet:

Once we get another dominate DT in the draft or freeagency them expect his sacks to rise a whole lot

you'd hope so. We said that once Daniels gets somebody else playing opposite him, his sack totals would rise a lot. Didn't happen.

We need to draft players to come in and compete for these spots.
