Anyone tried the Xbox 360 driving wheel - is it worth it?

My son has a birthday coming up and has no idea what he wants ... with Christmas just passed, I'm scraping the bottom of the ideas barrel too.

He's well taken care of with sports equipment, board games, video games, clothes, music, paintballing etc etc

Man kids these days are lucky. When I was growing up if my brother and I wanted anything like that we had to make money and buy it. I guess we can thank videogame companies for making these things out of the price range of the average kid huh?

Just give him the greatest gift of all- cash...let the gift inventiveness come from him, afterall that means less thinking for you :D

No kidding, he does alright ... it certainly helps him that I'm living a second childhood through 'his' toys. :D

No expense is spared on the gaming set up 'cause dad gets his share of time on the system.

I wouldnt get home a wheel. I had one for my ps2 way back, wasnt worth it and made steering worst. Now if they have improved that, I wouldnt know, but I wouldnt get one. But Money is good, or if hes a skins fan, maybe some memorbilia? Or best of all.. Ask him?

The new force-feedback wheels have decent reviews so I was curious who had played them with the 360 ... and he doesn't know what he wants.

I am not a good reviewer but I have one of these wheels. Since I have never used a wheel like this before I have nothing to compare to. That being said I think it is a GREAT accessory. It comes with Project Gotham Racing and the game allows for the force feedback on this wheel. So it FEELS like racing a car. The speed of the car tightens the steering, jumping a curb and you can feel it. Running over rough pavement feels like it, and going into a spin and you feel the loss of control of the car. If you drive in the ****pit view it is a total blast. Even for a 34 year old. :D

My opinion is if you choose to spend $150.00 on these type of things it is well worth the money. Oh yea and I let my kids play with MY toy!!

Thanks - we (oops ... I meant he) like driving games and so this could be worthwhile. Did you get the Microsoft product, or one of the others? If it includes PGR I giuess that justifies the higher price compared to others?

If you get one get the Microsoft one for the force feedback. I tried one at my local Best Buy today and it was pretty nice. However, I would definately need more time with it. Even with the force feedback the steering was still way too light for my liking. Especially when driving a performance car you want very stiff steering for added control and I felt the way it was setup the steering was too light and I thought just using a regular controller was much easier. Also, coming out of turns the wheel didn't pull itself back to the middle in order to straighten out the car like a real car does. Maybe your local BB has one setup as well and you can try it out and see if it is worthwhile. I thought it was well-built and I think if I owned one I could get the hang of it soon enough but I was underwhelmed by how "realistic" the force feedback really was. That said, it is a lot better than a wheel without force feedback and it was really designed for Forza 2 which is coming out in a couple months and may implement this technology better.
