Jumbie - 11 weeks old this past Tuesday.

Why the name Jumbie?

Jumbie Bay is a beach on St. John, U.S. Virgin Islands. The word is African in origin, coming from the word djambe, and referring to a malevolent supernatural being, similar to the duppy of Jamaica and the zombie of Haiti.

Jumbie hasn't figured out yet that my girlfriend's cat is the mortal enemy.

Perhaps the finest hotel I ever stayed in was the Jumby Bay, on a private island off of Antigua.

$800/night for the cheapest room at the worst time of year? Damn dude... you've got some coin to spend. That's a lot of dough for a bit of sunshine :)

I knew when I opened this thread... it would be a pet. No way TheKurp would change his lifestyle for a spouse or child :)

Nice, I love golden retrievers, only they get those strange health problems. We had to put our golden retriever to sleep this summer because he developed lung cancer nobody smokes in our house so he didnt breathe that in. Fantastic dogs but I dont think I could take the risk of chronic problems...I knew other people whose dogs had that hip dysplasia and had to be put down.

Those dogs look great though. I'm more of a cat person myself though I am looking at finding another siamese cat...and not the ugly modern kind, the original "applehead" ones that look normal.

Edit: I love that picture with the cat. Golden retrievers seem to never realize they are supposed to be enemies with other animals, they are great pets.

Sorry to hear that. Mine got pancreatic cancer and passed on this summer. She made it about a month away from her tenth birthday. And she came from VERY good stock and a highly reputable breeder. Hip dysplasia is very common, too, especially if the golden is of questionable breeding.

LOL. Stayed there for two nights. Spent the rest of the week on Antigua proper, in a place that cost about 1/4th that.

Just wanted a little taste of the high life.

I remember when we got there. The private boat picked us up and took us over. It was lunchtime. There was this huge amazing buffet set out - lobster, crab, caviar, you name it. So the wife and I grab plates and fill them up to the very brim and head over to our table. Everything was delicious.

For some reason, it seemed like people were looking at us kind of odd, but we didn't know why. Then the waiter arrived. And handed us the lunch menu. We had just gone Somalian on the appetisers. How mortifying.

Oh I forgot to say - what a great dog! Awww... woookatim!

You're right about that. Our Golden (Abby) has had ongoing problems with a blistery rash on her stomach that also darkens her skin. We've seen a variety of vets about it... and we've tried every single medication as well as change her food to the hypo-allergenic brand (expensive stuff). But it keeps recurrings.

She also had problems with an ear infection when she was younger... but that problem is one of the few that was eradicated.

And lastly... she has these anal sacs that need to be expressed quite frequently. It's a buildup of anal fluid that seeps out fluid every so often.... and it's FOUL (stinks up an entire room). It's uncontrollable. Of course, she licks her butt... and now her breathe permanently smells like @ss. To get those sacs expressed is about $30 per shot... and we can't get it done often enough. The only other alternative is surgery... but there's also a chance that she can become incontinent and lose complete bowel control.

We didn't want to risk it :)

She's a great dog otherwise though.

Thanks everyone.

Re: Health problems in golden retrievers. Unfortunately, the popularity of the breed has led to indescriminate over-breeding and as a result the most commonly seen golden retriever today bears little resemblance to the dog Lord Tweedmouth of Scotland is credited with creating back in the 1860's.

There are breeders scattered across the U.S. and in other countries who have dedicated themselves to preserving the breed and produce dogs that not only adhere to the physical characteristics of the original golden retrievers, but that also have the kind temperament and robust health of their ancestors. However these breeders are few and far between and one has to do due diligence to find them. And when you do find them, be prepared to pay the price for the work these breeders put into producing high quality golden retrievers.

I posted about the death of my first golden about a month ago. She was from such a breeder and she lived to almost 14 years old. She never had symptoms of elbow or hip displaysia and was relatively healthy her entire life before succumbing to a brain tumor. My newest addition comes from the same breeder. Both the sire and dam of Jumbie qualified for Westminster in 2006 - with the dam winning Best of Opposite Sex in Breed.

Here's a picture of the Sire: Ch. Dauninge's Maximus Auerus

The Dam: CH Toasty's Hello Dolly

And this... well, I don't know what to think. But I think my girlfriend has some explaining to do regarding her cat.
