Gibbs long has been one to avoid raising his voice, but his stentorian address to the team — audible by media members down the hall at Redskins Park — on the Wednesday before the Panthers game was a mild surprise to some, even if the Redskins had lost 5-of-6 entering Week 12. The team is pretty badly banged up right now, as many around the league are. Yet, Gibbs has felt that his team hasn’t given its best effort, even if the coach will fall on the sword before throwing his players under the bus 10 times out of 10. The timing of the tirade is intriguing. It probably has a lot to do with the plight of the Redskins, but a team source says it also occurred one week after QB Jason Campbell’s insertion into the starting lineup. With Campbell having had a game under his belt, Gibbs likely felt more liberated to challenge his team. The tactic may have worked, as the Redskins defeated the Panthers in Week 12, ending a two-game losing streak.
herrmag
I'm curious as to why Gibbs waited so late into the season to do this, or do this at all. Perhaps he feels that Williams/Saunders are not getting the job done (at least as far as motivating the players), and finally decided to handle it himself? alaadin123
This was a last resort for Gibbs, the team was finally beginning to show what some were suspecting, the team was imploding and Gibbs had to do something different. To hear Gibbs raise his voice and mentioning things like "job's on the line", these guys knew this game was about a lot more than just winning or loosing. Has nothing to do with the assistant coaches. Gibbs is the HEAD COACH and it is on him if they do not play well. He yelled at the players because the poor performance had everything to do with the players. The team has not given their best effort...
Sarge
This "raising the voice" thing is BS. My Mom, who worked at Redskins Park before the danny purge, said Gibbs used to raise hell on Mondays after a loss. So much so that some of the other women were afraid to come to work
