RUMORS FLY OF COWHER TO 'SKINS

There are rumors -- we repeat, rumors -- snaking through the NFL grapevine linking Steelers coach Bill Cowher to the Washington Redskins.

These are only rumors, but they're definitely out there.

Part of the problem with any rumor mill is that the rumors aren't always consistent. Last week, a league insider expressed to us in no uncertain terms that current Redskins coach Joe Gibbs is, by all appearances, fully intent on returning in 2007.

Earlier in the year, we'd heard rumors that Gibbs might pack in it after the 2006 season and return to his NASCAR racing interests.

And even if Gibbs retires from the 'Skins and Cowher retires from the Steelers and then Redskins owner Dan Snyder offers to double or triple Cowher's annual salary, the Steelers would have to be willing to release their rights to Cowher for the 2007 season.

In other words, a coach with time remaining on his contract can't jump to a new team merely by "retiring" and then a month or two later "unretiring."

Regardless of whether the current rumors have any validity, we believe that the Redskins are one of the teams that eventually could land Cowher's services. Cowher is young, and we can't imagine a permanent "retirement" at age 49. And the 'Skins definitely would pay Cowher market value, which currently is at least $8 million per year and could be as much as $10 million annually.

The only caveat? Cowher's mentor, Marty Schottenheimer, had a bad experience in his single season with the 'Skins; thus, Marty might advise Cowher to look elsewhere.

Our guess? Cowher will spend a year or two working in television, and then he'll be available to the highest bidder that is in a locale close to his new family home in North Carolina.

Hey, John Fox can't coach the Panthers forever, can he?

Now I'm confused. I thought it was Jeff Fisher?

Oops. I see that's already been mentioned. :)

So I'll add this, at the risk of dignifying this silliness ... even if we WERE in the market, I'd hope we wouldn't serioulsy consider Cowher. As great as that chin is, and as long as he's had the Steelers respectable, after the title last year he'd no longer be a hungry young up and comer. He'd be someone else's peaked star trying to recreate glory somewhere else. Not something you see succeed very often. Five years ago, maybe. Today, it just doesn't feel right.

it will be gibbs untill at least 2008 and I think we have more of a chance of Gibbs staying longer if we loose. For a man like gibbs I think that life is more about the ride then getting to where your going. Just look at his life. When something his is working on gets to the top he is ready for something else another ride.

No dig on our current head coach, but can't most of the same stuff (besides the chin) be applied to him?

For real?

Can you flesh that thesis out? :)

Cowher has a track record of developing talent from within the organization, cheaply and effectively. If I didn't know any better, I'd say that the Steelers had a farm system set up. :)

That is exactly what this organization needs. We need to develop talent from within, rather than paying players for what they did somewhere else.

I think Cowher has also done a good job getting the most out of his QB's over the years. He's never actually had an all star at the position until recently, but I think he's done a great job of maximizing the talent at that position.

With Jason Campbell and Clinton Portis to build around, I think Cowher could do some scary things in Washington.

Just my opinion though.

What great coach wouldn't want to come to Washington to go down the drain. How many players, coaches come here to go out to pasture? Mark Carrier, Bruce Smith, Troy Vincent, Jeff George, Adam Archuletta, Jeremiah Trotter. This team is cursed. Move the stadium off of the Indian burial ground and perhaps they will start winning. Cowher is as dumb as "Spitball" in the Bang Cartoons if he comes to Washington.

It would actually be what this team needs.

Yeah, aside from the silliness of the rumors, I don't think it would be a bad move. I think Fisher would be a good pick up too. The fact that they're having bad years this year doesn't mean anything, they have very good recent track records. And it's no secret that the hard-ass, disciplinarian style of head coaching works in most cases better than the softer, "just one of the guys" type of coaches. I think Dungy and Payton are the only coaches with a winning record who are that style of coach. And, well, we all know Dungy's playoff record.
