Will any republicans now become democrats?

They're are bandwagon fans with every winner, though honestly this election was more about "throw the bums out" than a democratic victory. If in the next two years, the democrats decisons look good and the country feels like it's moving positively, 2008 might be begin a truer ideologic shift.

I believe that you'll likely see some of the more "centrist" Republicans switch parties, or at least become very buddy-buddy with the Democrats.

For me the bigger issue will be.... What is the Republican Party reaction to those members who do decide to sleep with the enemy? Personally, if I were a Republican, I'd want them purged from the party IMMEDIATELY.

I think Lincoln Chafee of Rhode Island has been talking about switching parties. He's a lame duck senator though so really who cares about him. It wouldn't surprise me to see Leiberman's sorry ass go from Dem to Repug.

Chafee has NEVER been anything other than a Liberal & a Democrat. He may have been a member of the Republican Party but that's only because of his father; not anything philosophical. You are correct though, that he's discussed running again as a Democrat in the future.

I don't think you'll see Leiberman switch. He's been too closely tied to the Democrat Party for too long to really make the switch. He sold his soul to run on the ticket with a friggin' Socialist, so I don't think he'll change parties.

I thought you turned away from Christianity? Do you still believe in the devil in your new faith?

You are correct that I am not Christian. That doesn't mean I don't believe in the spirit/soul. Christianity doesn't have a copyright on that concept so far as I know.

I believe that there are forces of both Good and Evil in the world, though the Christian mythos of Satan as a fallen angel isn't part of my beliefs. I also believe that the soul may be made to pay for the actions of the body and spirit during this life in the next one.

Now could we get back to the topic at hand?

Okay, was just curious. The selling your soul comment took me aback. :).

Sorry about that. Didn't mean to sound like I was jumping all over you on the religion thing. I just get a little annoyed when people seem to believe that Christianity has the sole copyright on ideas like the soul, good vs. evil, and things like that. It wasn't meant as anything personal.

If you really want to know more, send me a PM.

As to the topic-

2008 will be a clean slate election. If the Dems show well, they will be given a second chance. If they don't people will revert to their normal voting patterns.

I think we'll get a really good idea of who both the Democrats AND the Republicans REALLY are in the next two years. Hopefully the majority of the American voters out there will be paying attention as well; though I doubt that.

No promblem.

My hope is that people do pay attention. The majority is razor thin and the President can veto, that means that obstructionism is really an easy course for the Repubs to follow. Nontheless, I hope that this new government set is not only well-intentioned, but well-thought out. We will never agree on every choice or even motive, but we should vigorously be trying to make the country better, whether on the micro level (volunteering, tutoring, being a good role model) or on the macrolevel. The potential downfall of our society has a lot more to do with self-indulgence and laziness I think than outright malice or stupidity.

At least we'll agree on the hope that people pay more attention to the goings-on in DC in the next two years than they have in recent decades. I won't be holding my breath on that, however.

The majority for the Democrats IS razor thin, and they don't have the Executive branch. It will be very interesting to see how the two sides deal with each other when it comes to highly-charged issues. I'd like to see the two sides work together, so long as the Republicans hold strong to their convictions on the important issues. I believe that there are some things that the Democrats just have totally wrong in a manner that is not acceptable to compromise on at all. If the Republicans don't hold strong on certain issues, I think you'll find a one party government in two years, where the Republicans may not be more than an after-thought in anything (ie... less than 35 Republicans in the Senate and similar percentage in the House).

not in any numbers. if you actually look at who was elected, they were "moderate" democrats like Heath Shuler. Not liberals. in the next two years under Pelosi/Murtha and Levin there will be a LOT of disagreements over tax policy, the war, legislation, the Courts.

It has started already with a large split among Dems between the Steny Hoyer camp and the Murtha camp over the #2 spot in the House. I think McCain will have enough coattails to win back about 5 seats in the 08 House election
