A Tale of Two Cities - read it.

Restoration

Zulu

Shaka Zulu - seen it, nice historical.

1492

Spartacus

Henry V - seen it, read it - depends on your outlook if you like it.

Gods Must Be Crazy - hilarious, no food or drink in your mouth on this one.

Gallipoli - seen it, you have to appreciate french history.

Elizabeth

Shakespeare in Love

The Seven Samurai - seen it. a classic.

The Last Samurai

El Cid - seen it, but it will look old and tired.

Amadeus - seen it, decent.

Immortal Beloved

Luther

The LastValley

A Man for All Seasons

Rob Roy

The Girl with the Pearl Earring

55 Days in Peking

The Sand Pebbles

Viva Zapata - Hilarious, although not intended to be.

A Farewell to Arms

Nicholas and Alexandra

Reds - kind of a must see.

Dr. Zhivago I think my favorite on the list, simply for the music and scenery, although the plot is very good.

DEFINITELY watch "Hero"

Beautiful film that can easily be disected... However, you are doing this for a history class, not a film or English class (the symbolism, metaphors and such are wonderfully done and easy to find), so I'm not sure how it'd be when breaking it down historically.

I highly recommend it...then again, I'm a sucker for good film that comes from the asian studios (insert out-of-context "asian porn" joke here).

Amadeus is alright, but at your age, it depends on your open mindedness on the subject matter, and whether or not you care about classical music. Interesting material, though.

I'd avoid "Seven Samurai" aka "Shichinin no samurai", mostly because the film is over three hours long, and again, a black and white movie from a Japanese studio in the 50s probably isn't in your range of likeness.

You might like 13th Warrior. It is also fairly recent...but I don't remember anything from it other than that (and that Antonio Banderas was in it).

Definitely get your hands on Hero. I want to watch it again just because I read this thread.

The Last Samurai would probably be tolerable, being as it is also a recent hollywood flick. I have not watched the entire thing yet, though.

Ben Hur is a classic, but I haven't gotten around to viewing that one yet (its ranked only 120 of all time on IMDB ;))

What kind of movie do you want to watch? Some of these, like The Seven Samurai are long (and in the case of Seven Samurai, foreign.) Some of them, like The Gods Must be Crazy, lean more towards the comedy side of the spectrum. Others, like Hotel Rwanda, are definitely not comedies.

My recommendation is that you go to www.imdb.com and read up on the ones that sound interesting to you.

I thought Hotel Rwanda was hilarious.

so for some movies, it is post WWI only because there weren't enough movies for those regions.

But you have a choice of Gallipoli (WWI) and Breaker Morant (WWII).

Re: Gallipoli. Is that the one with a young Mel Gibson? If so, this is an Australian perspective based on Aussie diggers, and how they survived (and how some didn't) the treacherous landing at Gallipoli Cove.

Every year on April 25 (ANZAC Day), we remember this event with a nation wide public holiday, and towns and cities across the country have street marches honouring both those who survived, and those who paid the ultimate price.
