Offense Ahead of the Defense?

In Friday's Practice Blog on Redskins.com it stated that the offense was ahead of the defense in Friday's practice.

To me this is very unfortunate....For the rest of the NFL! Our defense is one of the best in the league, early on, they should be head and shoulders above of the offense. Now obviously the defense is not perfect right now and still may have some problems, but still they are playing in the same system with only a few new additions. The offense, however, is learning a new system and has to incorporate a few more players than the D. The fact that they outplayed the defense on Friday is great news, at least to me anyways, because it means they are progressing and learning very nicely. We know our defense is going to be elite, and if our offense is elite too, their is only one thing to say.

I feel bad for the other 31 teams.:logo:

I think this is a back and forth type of situation that will occur during camp. It does help our offense to go against a great defense day after day in the offseason and likewise it helps our defense to play against a talented offense.

So I don't read too much into it other than the offense had a good day. HTTR!

I was there this morning and I wouldn't necessarily agree that the offense was ahead of the defense. The offense had most of it's success against a backup secondary. You'll hear about a 40 yd TD pass Brunell threw to Santana down the right sideline, but in all honesty, the pass was underthrown by a good 5 yards. Santana had to come to a dead stop to let the ball catch up to him. The only reason it was complete was because the backup safety (it was cover 2 on the play) didn't turn his hips and go for some reason. But, against the defensive starters in 7 on 7 and 11 on 11 the starting offense was just throwing to checkdowns 70% of the time. And no successes in the running game can really be counted because the players weren't in full pads and to me, this favors this offense b/c linemen just have to get in the way rather than really block. It's totally different without pads, but less so for the passing game. Right now, I would say the only way the offense really was ahead of the defense was on several screen passes that were well designed and ended up as big gainers.

i wish i could be there to see for myself, but for the sake of conversation, could you imagine if our offense is better than our defense this year? I find it hard to believe but it sure would be great, especially considering gregg williams' defenses are at there most dominant when the other teams offense is trying to play catch-up.

In Friday's Practice Blog on Redskins.com it stated that the offense was ahead of the defense in Friday's practice.

Based on what I witnessed on opening day, to the untrained eye this statement would be correct. The reason was the defense was not out there to knock out the offense, but the offense was all out. Add to this Saunders having the ball carrier run to the end zone no matter what. It appears they were breaking many plays BIG. The reality was most of the time multiple defenders pulled back from hitting.

I love this statement!
