The kicking situation

Fans should start taking note of Tyler Jones. He has been excellent in practice. His kickoffs average end zone and 4.0+ hang times. He is constantly outperforming Hall. Jones has a much stronger leg and has missed only 2 FGs since training camp began. Jones led the nation in scoring as a kicker his senior year at Boise state and was 24-27 in FGs. He was perfect in pre-season with the Browns last year with a game winning 41 yarder against the Giants. He was also a star in NFL Europe this past summer. Hall will never be the same after surgery and is struggling. He has to ice his groin after every practice. Jones is the best young kicker in the NFL and should be given the opportunity to be the the man in Washington. The team needs to give him plenty of reps in pre-season. Even if the team keeps Hall for one final year, Jones needs to be the kick-off specialist.

I didn't see much of Tyler Jones. Hall missed some FGs. Frost looked alright but very inconsistent.

David Lonie, consistently kicked boomers. His hangtime on punts was absurd. his kicks were quite a bit higher than Frosts, and he seemed to put the ball inside the 5 a rack of times when punting from the 35.

He looked pretty good but I heard some guys on the radio blasting him for shanking one pretty bad....I guess the didn't watch much of Frost last year.

EASY SOLUTION: OUR OFFENSE SCORES A WHOLE LOT AND THE PUNTER AND KICKER SIT ON THEIR BUTTS UNLESS WE ARE KICKING OFF. IN THAT CASE OUR DEFENSE IS RIDICULOUS! AND THE OFFENSE WILL GET THE BALL BACK FOR A SCORE!

sorry for the caps but the kicking game will be fine b/c our o and d will make up for it!

I know most of us would like to erase the pre-Gibbs II era from our memories but let's not forget how consistent Hall was before his injuries and even last year when he wasn't injured. Now that the problem that was causing his leg injuries have been fixed supposedly let's give him another chance. It's not like kickers who can make 50+ yarders or even kick average FG's in the clutch grow on trees. Who would we replace him with at this point in time?

Why did Hall miss 2 kicks on Saturday??? One was only like 35 yards; Kids on high school teams can make a 35 yard field goal. Concern anyone?

I'm definitely concerned but I'm not going to sound the alarm just yet. The coaches pretty much summed it up saying they like Hall but obviousely 1 out of 3 field goals ain't good. I think if he keeps missing wide left, right or short the coaches will start looking for other options there.

You're kidding, right? Field position and the ability to make the occasional 50 yarder puts you over the hump in those tight games, like most of the ones the Skins lost last year.

Look at the Pats dynasty and tell me a reliable kicker wasn't key.

I am worried about our kicking game, given that David Akers looked in mid-season form in the HOF game, and Vanderjerk is now in the division with the Pukes. It might be us and the Gianst competing to see whose kicking game is worse. Finally, to thos who aren't worried about the Kicking game, all we have to do is look back to 2000 to see the parade of disasters and nincompoops (Conway, Husted, Heppner, Murray, Conway) to see what not having a decent kicker does to a team. It's only recently that I have been able to watch a 'Skins FG or PAT attempt without covering my eyes.

Hall IS injury prone and we DO need a new kicker. while this issue hasnt got that much attention as perhaps teh o-line his flaws were shown in the scrimmage. granted his two misses were from 47 and 46 respectively you HAVE to make at least one of them.

in the smash mouth division that we are in it is very possible that the games could come down to a last second 50- yard field goal and im not confident that Hall can do it. if memory serves me right Hall missed a 50 yrd field goal to beat the chargers last year. the kicker problem wont come uip until it cost us a game.

From the talk about his injury, I'm worried less about Hall and more about the punting situation.

Frost was horrible last year. He was a liability.

I was hoping he would come out against the ratbirds and suck it up.

Unfortunately, it sounded like he did pretty well, and the competition looked like doo-doo.

I have zero confidence in Frost. I hope we find another solution.

Here's the situation: John Hall is a loser. He'll get hurt again this year and possibly cost us MULTIPLE games. He's basically stealing money.

I have thought this for a while now, (Big John Hall hater here :yikes: ) and after seeing him miss 2 out of 3 during the scrimmage, it is solidified in my mind that this man is correct. The man is overpaid, and an underachiever the past few years. The John Hall that was a kicker for the Jets is no longer here, we have his evil twin with the leg of a 12 year old girl, and a tattoo on his lower back. I think Hall will at least lose one game for us this season, unless Lonie does all the fieldgoals, and in that case, cant we just let Hall go?

Here's what they said on the practice blog

The special teams specialists went to the main practice field to get some work in. Time to focus on John Hall. The veteran kicker was solid from all distances, including on 50-yard kicks. He nailed 5-of-6 from the distance. Still worried about him? Obviously practice is different from games, but that should help ease concerns. Afterwards, Hall worked on PATs and 20-yarders. Didn't miss once. 4:32 p.m. ET

How is Tyler Jones, the first-year kicker out of Boise State, doing? He was solid as well, connecting on two 50-yard field goals before... 4:38 p.m. ET

That sounds better. I hope that Hall can stay healthy and be effective. Do we carry two kickers this year, maybe Tyler as a kick-off specialist?

The FG's are important of course, but I generally trust Hall inside 40 yards-- I think our offense will be good enough to get him close. I don't love him as a field goal guy, but I don't hate him either.

But the kickoff thing drives me INSANE. Our dominant defense is sometimes not able to be utilized to the fullest because of poor field position. Some of our kickoffs last year were landing around the 12-15 yard line and it was a miracle when one made it past the 5. Coaches get so paranoid about gameday rosters that few want to use a spot on a "kickoff specialist." But I think it's worth it. I'd have an open call for anyone who can boot a football to the goaline or farther. If it means we sacrifice a 6th LB or a 7th DB, then so be it.
