Guest GIBBSisGOD
So tonight i was playing some poker with some of the guys and we got to talking about football and the Redskins' acquisition of Antwan Randel El. With this we obviously got on the topic of how the Redskins overpayed for his services. I tried telling them that not only are we ahead of the times by paying over market now to pay market or below market later but none of them seemed to understand. Another point none of them seemed to understand was the concept and importance of starting field position, which is the real reason i know we got Randle El. Now is it just me or was kick returns a huge part of the success of many teams like the Steelers and Broncos last year? Better field position makes the field shorter and therefore makes the offenses job easier to get a touchdown or a field goal. As i am now reading the book "Moneyball" doesn't this make sense ... that possibly we are ahead of everybody else in putting extremely high value on field position like the Oakland A's put emphasis on On Base Percentage .... tell me what you think or if you have any statistics that show the average field position's relationship with success that would be great .... Skins Addict
I agree that field position is important. The Skins are going to need ARE's long kick returns in order to cancel the ill effects of John Hall's painfully short kickoffs. Special teams are overlooked so much, yet they decide so many games. MustangSteve
Good point, Gibbs knew this team only ran on 2 out of 3 cylinders last year and still was good as any in the playoffs and SuperBowl. When his teams fire on all 3 cylinders, there dayum near unstopable and usualy bring home the trophy.

Hall had surgery; expect him to look like the kicker we picked up from the Jets. Many of the so-called Redskins faithful are going to have a lot of crow eating to do. Swift
Agreed. Many folks see ARE as merely the skins' 3rd/slot receiver, but he's much more valuable than that. And we definitely needed a good return specialist for our team. Also, special teams are definitely overlooked. How crucial was Brown's return-TD against the Cardinals last season? SittingBull
Is Randle El even slated to return kickoffs? He didn't seem to enthusiastic about the idea when asked about it. Our punt returns which was horrible last year will definitely benefit with ARE's presence.
Pimpey42000
well I remember seeing an old clip of George Allen during training camp and he always emphasized the start of every day with Special Teams practice?? Maybe this attributes to the same idea of Field Position???

I like Hall because he his big and physical for a kicker. I'd like to see him start pounding the ball into the endzone.
wilbur58z
What receiver ever looks good in Pittsburgh? Hines Ward looks okay, but the Steelers haven't been a place where receivers blossom lately, especially since Cowher's been there. Plaxico looked like a different player last year with the Giants. I think Randle El will do the same here. So I don't get why people are so caught up in what Randle El did or didn't do in Pittsburgh's offense. I'd be worried if we were getting a RB who didn't produce up there, given their propensity to run the ball, but not a receiver with clear athletic ability like Randle El and Plaxico have. It's just not a place where receivers can showcase their ability much.

How crucial was Brown's return-TD against the Cardinals last season? great point, and just to add to that, ARE could lead our team in total yds which is saying alot for just a " SLOT " wideout. What will they say when he makes a game changing play by returning, throwing, or just by getting Y.A.C. This guy is underrated just like most of Gibbs players and somehow Gibbs has 3 rings

swaroopm
I agree that Randle El's value comes due to his participation in special teams. Gibbs is definitely putting a lot of emphasis on special teams (perhaps outside of the K and P positions, it seems...) so bringing in Randle El makes sense to me. If we were just bringing in Randle El to play WR, I don't think it would have made as much sense to give him the contract that we did. I think it's clear that a number of personnel decisions (besides Randle El) have been made with special teams in mind, and that's something I don't recall happening as much before Gibbs came back. SkinsFanInTennessee
I am just glad to have a PR specialist like ARE... Not offense to James Thrash, but he wasnt electricfying in PR duties. Dont get me wrong, JT is probably the best all around special teams player we have, along with Mike "The Tugboat" Sellers. I am just pumped to see ARE take his first punt return. Fifty Gut
we were like top 5 in coverage on special teams, but straight up GARBAGE return wise very obvious that Gibbs wanted a proven commodity at that position nothing hurt the offense more than having to start at the opponent's 20 every drive
Davethegolfguy
Once again I put my faith in the coaching staff which saw something they wanted in Randall El. Perhaps they know more than the rest of us.
