Satellite Radio question - XM or Sirius?

Schweet - although this will be a rebuilding year for WVU basketball. Unless Jerry West's kid is a clone.

:D

What's sucks about Sirius (and maybe all satellite radio) is that it appears that they charge you extra if you want service to more than 1 receiver. In other words, if the wife wants it in her car/work also.

West's boy is going to get redshirted. XM has developed something called a passport (imagine a Gameboy game cartridge) that will allow your subscription to be more flexible. Any radio that has the passport dock (of which all will be manufactured this way) will accept the passport, giving you greater flexiblity with your subscription.

Keep in mind that XM has the only portable LIVE receivers. With the Pioneer Inno (and etc.), XM is actually on their second generation of live wearables. The Inno doubles as an MP3 player too.

I have Sirius, and IMO it's a lot better then XM. XM is generally music, but thats what an IPOD is for right? XM only carries MLB and half of the college football. Sirius carries ALL NFL games, and that includes the Skins, and it also carries ALL NBA games, along with the new addition of the NHL. Sirius also has Howard Stern and has political talk shows along with music. Oh yeah, and it also has 24/7 NFL and NBA talk shows.

I own a Delphi SkyFi (XM), Delphi MyFi (XM), and a Sirius Sportster.

XM has:

ESPN Radio

ESPNEWS

Fox Sports Radio

Sporting News Radio

NASCAR Radio (until 1-1-07)

IRL Racing

PGA Tour Network

XM Deportivo (Spanish sports)

Sport Plus (French sports)

WLW 700 (Cincinnati)

MLB Home Plate

MLB Play by Play (176-189)

MLB Play by Play (Spanish 190)

ACC (191-193)

Big Ten (194-196) (except Michigan and Ohio State home broadcasts)

Pac 10 (197-199) (except USC and UCLA home broadcasts)

Big East (200)

NHL Home Ice

NHL Play by Play (205-209)

XM broadcast six ESPN Radio bowl broadcasts and eight other bowl games.

World Cup Soccer

World Baseball Classic

Sirius has:

ESPN Radio

ESPNEWS

Sports Byline USA

Sirius Sports Action

NFL Radio

NFL Play by Play (31 teams excluding Tennessee Titans home broadcasts)

Sports Play by Play 1 (Live games)

NBA Radio

ESPN Deportes

Various collegiate teams (http://www.sirius.com/servlet/ContentServer?pagename=Sirius/CachedPage&c=FlexContent&cid=1121372461377) for football, basketball, and baseball

CFL Play by Play (select games)

Arena Football Play by Play (select games)

Wimbledon

Heisman Trophy Presentation

English Premier Soccer

XM dedicates channels for play by play making them easier to find. Sirius has NFL Radio, but you might have to search for the games. Sirius also has WVU football. My advice...go for both. You'll more than likely be watching the Redskins and WVU. You can catch every MLB game on XM, and you're not likely to watch every baseball game.

Excellent list.

Sirirus also has :

Wrestling

Martial arts

Boxing shows

World Soccer Daily

horse racing

XM :

Another vote for Sirius, I have been driving a lot lately and the Stern show makes a road trip just fly bye. They also repeat the show all day long so you can hear it whenever you want plus the streaming is provided when you sign up.

The NFL channels are great but it being summer I do miss having the MLB games. I imagine at some point these two companies will be forced to consolidate into a singal entity, until then I would rather have the NFL than the MLB.

Sirius does not carry ALL NBA games and no longer has the NHL. XM has Opie & Anthony and political talk shows. They basically carry the same programming other than the leagues they cover.

Excellent list.

Sirirus also has :

Wrestling

Martial arts

Boxing shows

World Soccer Daily

horse racing

XM also has boxing on the BBC.

:(

Does Sirius not have a live receive anywhere on the go receiver like XM does?

If I get a receiver, will I be stuck either listening to it in the car or at home (where the main antenna is mounted)?

I won't be able to bring it to work huh? Or out and about?

Sirius has the S50 which records something like 50 hours, but it is not a live wearable. With aftermarket attachments and modifications, you can make it live, but I don't know what all you need to do it. Good sites to visit for info are:

XM fans: http://www.xm411.com or http://www.xmfan.com

There is no doubt that the NFL is a big draw. I thought I should mention that XM seems to be very focused on technological improvements. Many of the XM and Sirius plug and play units (receivers that go from the car to the house or boombox) utilize an FM transmitter that broadcasts onto an unused FM frequency on your existing radio. The latest fad for terrestrial radio to combat the digital quality of satellite radio is HD Radio. HD comes close to satellite radio in audio quality, supposedly boosting AM to what you might currently hear on FM. XM has applied for a patent to transmit to HD receivers instead of using only an FM transmitter. Instead of fearing terrestrial radios HD defense, XM is embracing it and trying to utilize it. XM also has the second generation of live wearables that also function as mp3 players. XM gives you a lot of options in receivers, including some that have 5.1 neural surround. Don't take this as a Sirius bash, because it's not. I can't wait for the day that an interoperable receiver is released. Can you imagine seperate radios in your car to pick up AM or FM?

If you want a live portable, you definitely need to go XM. Sirius is yet to come out with one as XM is on it's 2nd generation. I will say though, listening to recorded content has satisfied me much more than I thought before I tried it. And i'm someone who really enjoys being able to listen to news and sports live. Having said that, I don't think I could live without the live capability.

Oh, and I love my Pioneer Inno. :D

Sirius is very very good with sports, but as mentioned the format sucks.XM has channels punched together by sport year round. The ACC,PAC 10,Big Ten channel for bball and football. The Sirius NFL and NBA games and on all over the place depending on programimg.I think the should just set aside chahels for each.I do like how Sirius has both markets radio programs covering a particular game. But one could be on 123 and the other on 85.That sucks. Also the NBA coverage can preempt some channels that have other programming.I also think one guy is typing in scores.I've heared NBA games in the forth quarter and the score is say 100-94.But the screen may have 3rd quarter and the score is 68-65.

Saturday's /Sunday's in the fall are sick.College football all over the place. What I like about Sirius is that the mix of division in college football is better. All conferences are covered.XM sticks to the the super majors. Also soccer from England, and NFL makes alot of radio listening for me.

the only advantage Sirius has is the 24/7/365 NFL channel

on XM, you get in-depth NFL coverage, but only during the season (they actually talk about other boring ass sports, smh)

XM has much better music (I hear Sirius is just like top 20 bull**** stations you can find on FM), and is DC based... so you get a lot of Redskins coverage anyways because most of the broadcasts are from right down the street in DC

XM > Sirius

The question for prospective buyers is, how much do you really care about listening to sports on the radio? Football is a sport that you can reasonable keep up with on TV because it's only on once a week. Baseball is the only sport that matters on the radio, IMHO, because it's slow enough that it works and the games are played frequently enough that it's hard to watch all the games. If you agree with that logic, XM is for you. XM has ESPN radio, ESPN News, and Fox Sports radio just like Sirius. :2cents:

Except for the fact that Sirius doens't have Fox Sports Radio. ESPN Radio, Fox, and Sporting News Radio all have a roughly seven hour NFL update show during the season. SNR is preempted on the weekends when there is a live PGA event. Sirius is rumored to be coming out with a live wearable. I live in rural WV and there is NO sports talk radio, so I love to listen to ESPN, NASCAR, and MLB while mowing the lawn. I'll not be mowing while the Redskins are playing, so I don't really need a portable Sirius unit.

I have both services and they are both great. I listen to XM 75% of the time vs. Sirius. XM has the First Team on Fox (Steve Czaban from DC) and Opie and Anthony who are great. I record both shows daily on my Inno. Sirius is great for the NFL. I turn the sound down on the tv and sync up the audio on my dtivo so I can listen to Sonny and Sam. I used to love the Afternoon Blitz on the NFL channel but Riggins is no longer on there so the show sucks now.
