Diego Sanchez (23-4 MMA, 12-4 UFC) has been forced to withdraw from a planned UFC 135 co-headlining matchup with Matt Hughes (45-8 MMA, 18-6 UFC).

UFC president Dana White today announced the move via Twitter.

"Diego Sanchez broke his hand," White wrote. "Looking for a replacement for Hughes."

UFC 135 takes place Sept. 24 at Denver's Pepsi Center. A title fight between light-heavyweight champion Jon Jones and Quinton "Rampage" Jackson headlines the pay-per-view main card.

A timeframe for Sanchez's return to action wasn't announced.

Earlier this year, Sanchez picked up his second straight win with a close but highly competitive unanimous-decision victory over Martin Kampmann at March's UFC on Versus 3 event. "The Ultimate Fighter 1" middleweight winner and recent lightweight competitor returned to his more natural welterweight division in 2010 and suffered an uninspired decision loss to John Hathaway. However, he's since rebounded with wins over Paulo Thiago and Kampmann that both earned "Fight of the Night" awards.

Meanwhile, Hughes hasn't fought since November 2010, when he suffered a quick, 21-second knockout to B.J. Penn. Hughes, who long had been considered the best welterweight in MMA history, briefly contemplated retirement in 2008 following back-to-back losses to Georges St-Pierre and Alves. However, while fighting only occasionally, the UFC Hall of Famer had put together a three-fight win streak with wins victories Matt Serra, Renzo Gracie and Ricardo Almeida before the recent Penn loss.

Outside of the Bones/Rampage main event, 135 is looking like a Fight Night card.

I just came here to post thing. That is one of the funniest things I've ever seen. Twitter at it's finest.

I lol'd.

Also, I'm super excited that Cain/JDS is going to be on FOX. Chances are very slim that it won't be an exciting fight. Who do you guys have in that fight? I'm hoping Cain wins but damn JDS has some nice boxing.

I think Cain will win rather easily with repeated takedowns. Cain taking Brock down multiple times was very impressive. I highly doubt JDS can keep it standing.

I think it comes down to how Cain reacts after the long layoff from a major operation. If he's healthy, I think he's the favorite, but thats a hard injury to come back from.

on a sidenote, Koscheck tweeted that he's got a fight in 19days, looks like he could be filling in for Sanchez.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/sports_blog/2011/09/brock-lesnar-vs-alistair-overeem-ufc.html

Brock Lesnar will return to the UFC octagon in a five-round main event Dec. 30 at MGM Grand in Las Vegas, facing newly signed former Strikeforce heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem.

"Brock is a big name, a dangerous guy, and this is a dream matchup," Overeem told The Times on Tuesday, just after signing a standard UFC fight contract in the office of Chairman Lorenzo Fertitta. "Brock's a big guy, an exciting wrestler with his takedowns.

"I want to see this fight myself. Overall, I'm a different fighter. A striker, athletic, big. These are going to be two big trucks going at it on a collision course."

The 6-foot-5, 260-pound Overeem, 31, is a former K-1 kickboxing champion too, He most recently defended his Strikeforce belt in June with a unanimous decision over takedown specialist Fabrio Werdum, who had previously defeated Fedor Emelianenko.

Lesnar has been out of action since losing his UFC heavyweight belt to Cain Velasquez in October at Anaheim's Honda Center, suffering a return episode of the intestinal ailment diverticulitis.

The Dec. 30 winner will be first in line to fight the winner of a Nov. 12 fight between Velasquez and Junior Dos Santos.

"This is the fight the fans want," UFC President Dana White said. "Both of these guys are monsters. Can Lesnar take Overeem down?"

Fertitta said the Strikeforce belt won't be part of the promotion. The UFC has purchased Strikeforce.

"Our thinking when we bought Strikeforce was to give fans the fights they want," Fertitta said. "Obviously, Alistair's one of the best heavyweights in the world, but he also has that 'it' factor -- the tremendous look, he's huge. It's a star factor."

Overeem said he's exploring setting up training headquarters in Los Angeles.

So he finally recovered from the nerve damage GSP gave him as a reward for his **** talking on TUF?

Bad matchup for Brock , IMO, mostly because Overeem is pretty fast and accurate with his strikes and Brock even though his strength is wrestling, he will be coming off surgery, health problems, and a long layoff.

Brock vs. Overeem is probably smart because when the fight is over it's either going to be

1) "OMFG BROCK is BAAAAAAAAAACK"

or

2) "WOOOOW, there's a new badass in the UFC HW Division and his name is Allstair Overeem"

Also, each guy has a built in excuse for a loss. Brock's is obvious, coming off surgery and all this time out of the Cage, means he is rusty, while Overeem has "never faced this type of competition before"

Smart.

Also, it's a 5 round fight!

I just can't see this fight going 5 rounds. Overeem catches him and sleeps Lesnar early, or Brock takes him down repeatedly, Overeem gasses, and Brock pounds him out for the finish.

Wonder if they stack the New Years card like they have in the past. They could theoretically do a Jones-Evans fight on that card as Jones fights in September, assuming he beats Rampage of course

Man that would be amazing.

The HW division is officially interesting in MMA again. It will be interesting to see two giants, one of which is a dominant wrestler, the other a dominant striker go at it.

http://www.bloodyelbow.com/2011/9/6/2408547/ufc-fox-clay-guida-vs-ben-henderson-cain-velasquez-junior-dos-santosmma-news

The UFC held a press conference last week to announce the main event of Cain Velasquez vs Junion Dos Santos for the first show on Fox. The UFC confirmed that the Fox show would only air the title fight, leaving the airing of the rest of the card in question. Spike won't air the undercard hyping the main event on Fox and neither will Versus/NBC Sports. This means that the card will be aired on Facebook only. With no other fights announced, some suspected the UFC was going all in on Fox and the rest of the card would be filled with mid-card fodder. Today, along with the MASSIVE announcement of Brock Lesnar vs Alistair Overeem on December 30th, we finally know the co-main event for November 12th.

The rumored co-main event between Clay Guida and Ben Henderson seems to have finally come together as well. Kevin Iole of Yahoo Sports sent out the following tweet:

Another fight breaking: Within the last hour, verbal agreements reached for Clay Guida to face Ben Henderson at UFC on Fox on Nov. 12. #MMA

This fight is a logical choice for number one contender at lightweight. Both Henderson and Guida have been on a roll as of late and they have been looking dominant in doing so. Hopefully the UFC can find time to air this fight on Fox as it potentially holds more significance in the long term than any other co-main event currently booked. It also will be one of the most exciting lightweight fights as both fighters "bring it" every time they step into the cage.

The only issue with this is that the UFC and Fox have allotted one hour for this first event. Only having a one hour window limits their ability to show more than one fight and since the contract with Spike isn't up until New Year's Day, they won't be able to air the rest of the card on FX or FuelTV. Hopefully they have worked out a system to air the rest of the card without resorting to Facebook.

They have to figure out a way to get this fight on TV live, its too big a fight to be restricted to Facebook.

Man the UFC is rockin' right now. I'm so excited about this sport that I can barely pay attention to the 'Skins. It's great, because suddenly it's the regular season. I barely watched any preseason action because I'm satisfied enough with researching anything MMA. Rex Grossman is our quarterback? We trade Mark Rypien or something?

I'm going to stick with my guns and say Reem by first round KO. We all know how Brock reacts to getting hit, and Overeem is fairly decent at that particular aspect of the game. One shot to get Brock off balance and I think it'll be bad news for ole sword-chest. I also think Reem can potentially survive Brock's ground and pound early on. This will be a fight that I'll have to watch while standing up and far away from the TV. Too intense.
