techboy
Twain could have been a founding father  . And actually, no he couldn't have been (in the sense that the quotes seem to be evenly dispersed for the Founding Fathers, so that there's some doubt about where they stood). I've heard/read dozens of Twain quotes regarding God/the Bible/Christianity, and the dog one in my signature is the only one I've ever seen that could be regarded as remotely favorable, which is one of the reasons it stood out to me. At first, I didn't believe he had actually said/written it. I wouldn't be surprised to learn that he only said/wrote it to take somebody down a few pegs, and not because he actually believed it. Oh, and for the record, I love Twain, as anyone who at least pretends to have a sense of humor should, and I'll be joining this round. If I have time. If I have time. Easy boy  . You have a great sense of humor, thankfully . My comment about the founding father thing was more inclusive of his overall tempermant and views than just one area, and just lighthearted. He had some kind thoughts about people of faith, too. I would suggest that he mainly felt the need to draw attention to areas (like cleaning one's own house) that he believed needed a lot more work from the faithful than the proseltyzing department which he felt ran fine. But I don't want to hijack the thread, and I share with you an affection for him independent of his views. One of my prized possessions is a very cool penciled portrait of him. My visitors usually think it's Einstein

The 12th Commandment
Twain has always been one of my favorites. More so even for the sayings than his books. It's been 20+ years so another turn at it should be fun. At least it will be a pleasant read. I believe he describes The Plague adequately in this quote: "'Classic. A book which people praise and don't read."
techboy
By the way, for those who don't want to (or can't) buy the book for some reason, Project Gutenberg (a fantastic resource, by the way, with thousands of free ebooks and audio books, some even read by humans) has Huckleberry Finn, along with many other works by Twain for FREE. Scroll down the second link... it's near the bottom of the T's.
stevenaa
Picked it up a wallyworld tonight for a whopping $3.49. Economy of scale at work. I don't remember reading this before, though I know the story. In I go. See you at the half way point.

Jumbo
headhunter has an unfair advantage! plus, he's young enough to remember what he reads! he should have to work out of the latin edition.

PokerPacker
Funny, i bought this book awhile back, never got around to reading it. I guess i have my excuse now.Are there different versions of Huck Finn? I have this one: http://search.barnesandnoble.com/booksearch/isbnInquiry.asp?z=y&isbn=0520228383&itm=1 It has literally 100 pages of "explanatory notes." WTF is that about? :whoknows: that's probably the translated version. it interprets the hillbilly dialects for you so you can actually understand what they're saying. PokerPacker
might i remind you, though, before you start your book club meeting that "Persons attempting to find a motive in this narrative will be prosecuted; persons attempting to find a moral in it will be banished; persons attempting to find a plot in it will be shot." -Mark Twain
