in venice, i did all the san marco square and the the bridge and then just roamed around.

We went up the high tower in the square which was very nice with an amzing view. Also we went out to the island of Burano ( about a half hour ferry ride) where there was better and cheaper food. But most of my time was also spent just roaming around. It seemed like a better plan (and a cheaper one) than taking a gondola ride.

I'll tell you what pissed me off more than the damn pigeons though: we sat down at the cafe in San Marco square for a few drinks. The four of us each order drinks--2 beers, a sprite and an iced tea. They bring them out and we take a look at the receipt. . . they charged 40 euros(about $50) for those four drinks. It was so ridiculous it was almost funny. At first we thought it was a mistake, but then we learned it wasn't and got really furious. The same conversation was going on at each table in the square there and the whole place was full of waiters trying to defend themselves. God I hate snobby European waiters!

my parents and me decided that even though a gondola ride was very expensive.. it was once in a lifetime experience to do it.. its what venice is about... we got a gondola ride for 70 euroes for about 40 euros and he took us to the grand canal and ponte vechio.. i also went up on the clock tower

The pigeons were awesome. You guys have no idea what you're missing.

I saw this one guy get absolutely mauled by the pigeons when he was trying to feed them. He fell over and we all cracked up. I saw a bunch of other guys get shat on, one who was wearing a nice suit(I have no idea why, it was like 90 degrees outside and he was clearly a tourist). The Venetian government needs to import a couple good old southern boys and ignore their shotguns at the airport security and everyone will be happier for it, except those guys that sell the bird food. :2cents:

I'm not really sure what you're saying the price was, but either way, was it worth it? We saw basically the entire grand canal on the ferry ride from the train station(we came in on an overnight train from Geneva) to our hotel which was a few blocks from San Marcos square and we did see alot things just walking around too. I see your point about the once in a lifetime thing, but my dad's just a cheap ****.

I thought the whole Bridge of Sighs thing was kind of cool. And in the room where they had pictures of all of the doges and a list of their accomplishments, did you notice the one picture that was just black because he committed treason and tried to overthrow the government. Another random thought, did you walk between the two pillars in the square? If you did, be worried. It's bad luck to do so because that used to be where the gallows were.

im sorry i meant 70 euros for about 40 mins. my hotel was very near san marks square.. we stayed at hotel lux..

I was like five blocks from that hotel at the Hotel Castello. We didn't have a hotel when we got to Venice, so we went to this booth at the train station where they book hotels for you last minute. They offered us the Hotel Lux, but it was like 240 euros and the one we picked was like 180 euros(both prices for a 4 person room--not bad for Venice). She said the Lux was a pretty nice hotel though and it was better than the one we picked, but we were never in our room anyways, so who cares!

ya we got hotel lux for about 210 for 4 people.. 1 big bed and 2 singles. but the room was nice, and it was a good shower.. unlike many other places where it had a shower head and just a drain... no actually shower.. we experienced that in florence.. the toilet was maybe 5 inches away from the same shower floor...
