Jaron
I've been trying to think of who would be the all-time "Face" of each franchise in the NFL. This could be any player, coach, owner, etc who you immediately think of when someone mentions said team. For example, when someone says "Redskins," we automatically think "Joe Gibbs." This is what I've come up with so far: NFC East Washington - Gibbs Dallas - Landry (possibly Emmitt) N.Y. - LT Philly - McNabb (this is who I think of, but all-time.... ???) NFC North Chicago - Ditka (maybe Sweetness) Detroit - Barry Sanders Green Bay - Lombardi (possibly Farve) Minnesota - Tarkenton, Cris Carter, ??? NFC South New Orleans - Archie Manning Tampa Bay - Derrick Brooks ??? Atlanta - ??? Carolina - Sam Mills ??? NFC West San Fran - Montana Seattle - Largent Rams - Deacon Jones ??? Arizona - ??? AFC East New England - Belichick Miami - Marino (close call with Shula) Buffalo - Levy (O.J., Kelly, ???) N.Y. - Namath AFC North Pittsburgh - Noll (close call with Cowher and Rooney) Ravens - Ray Lewis Cincy - Boomer ??? Cleveland - Jim Brown AFC South Texans - Capers, Casserly  ??? Colts - Unitas Jacksonville - Brunell, Boselli ??? Oilers/Titans - Moon AFC West Denver - Elway Kansas City - Stram Raiders - Al Davis San Diego - Fouts ??? The choices with more than one player and/or question marks are ones that I'm not sure about. Feel free to make your own lists. Any and all input is welcome... DWinzit
You did well with the list. It's odd how some of the new teams really don't have a face. You had two blanks, I unfortunately came up with the Vick in Atlanta and for the cardinals Terry Metcalf. Although he played for multiple teams, for philly I thought of Reggie White. The one that glared out at me was Chicago. While struggling to come up with a single face for some organizations, you came up with two good ones here. That being said, my first thought was Butkus. Ax
Not bad, but if a may, I'd make a change or three... NFC East Washington - Gibbs Dallas - Landry N.Y. - LT Philly - Ron Jaworski NFC North Chicago - Butkus Detroit - Barry Sanders Green Bay - Lombardi (possibly Farve) Minnesota - Tarkenton, Alan Page NFC South New Orleans - Archie Manning Tampa Bay - Derrick Brooks ??? Jim McKay Atlanta - Steve Bartowski Carolina - Sam Mills ??? NFC West San Fran - Montana Seattle - Largent Rams - Deacon Jones ??? Arizona - Unfortunately for them, Bill Bidwell AFC East New England - Belichick Miami - Marino (close call with Shula) Buffalo - Levy (O.J., Kelly, ???) N.Y. - Namath AFC North Pittsburgh - Noll (close call with Cowher and Rooney) Ravens - Any Thief Cincy - Kenny Anderson Cleveland - Jim Brown AFC South Texans - Capers, Casserly ??? Colts - Unitas Jacksonville - Brunell, Boselli ??? Oilers/Titans - Earl Campbell/Eddie George AFC West Denver - Elway Kansas City - Stram or Len Dawson Raiders - Al Davis San Diego - Fouts ??? SkinsNatsFan
Arizona - Unfortunately for them, Bill Bidwell Yep. He's the clear reason they have no other face.
Commander_N_Chief
Could we add D. Green to the skins list, I think of #28 when I hear the skins name.
NWSkins
When i think of Arizona, i always think of Larry Centers, who still holds the runningback record for most career receptions.... For Atlanta, i think Jamal Anderson has to be mentioned. The "dirty bird" was unfortunately the most popular thing in the NFL at that time. sableholic
For the Oilers/Titans I always think of either Moon or Mcnair
chronicdesi
When I think about Philly, the first name that came to my mind was R. Cunningham. With Arizona I'm thinking about David Boston, maybe just because he was a monster of a man, and played during my generation.
docsandy
For the Redskins, I'd have to give Jack Kent Cooke a nod as well.. either tied for first with Gibbs or a very slight advantage. He is the one who brought Gibbs here. He is the one that always emphasized the fans. He didn't care how much money he spent unlike some owners (pre-salary cap). Don't get me wrong, I love Joe Gibbs. Cooke ranks pretty high though.
Art McDonough
Personally, I think the representative face of the Skins should be that one of Russ Grimm all bloody and bruised. That's the face of Redskin football.
bigyim
...I'm sorry, but you gotta have "Papa Bear" Halas for Chicago...he helped start the league, introduced a lot of innovations into football, and was player, coach or owner of the Bears for 65+ years. There are a lot of HOF players with the "C" on the helmet, but there's only 1 George Halas.
Snagletooth
I'll go with Pat Tillman for AZ. Aeneas Williams may have been their best player. They had some success with Niel Lomax at the helm, but the NFC East was a beast.
mdrun
Couple thoughts Cards- Eric Swann?, Pat Tillman? Philly- Definitly Cunningham for me
docsandy
Great list. Here's my :2cents: -- first names I think of when I see the team name for whatever reason. NFC East Washington - Gibbs, Jack Kent Cooke N.Y. - LT (Wellington Mara) Philly - McNabb (this is who I think of, but all-time.... ???) Reggie White NFC North Chicago - Ditka (maybe Sweetness) George Halas NFC South New Orleans - Archie Manning Tampa Bay - Derrick Brooks ??? Testeverde NFC West Rams - Deacon Jones ??? Youngblood AFC North Pittsburgh - Noll (close call with Cowher and Rooney), Terry Bradshaw Cincy - Boomer ??? Anthony Munoz (spelling?) AFC South Colts - Unitas AFC West Raiders - Al Davis, John Madden San Diego - Fouts ??? Kellen Winslow (he played for the Chargers, right?) Good list....I would only add the following: Philly- Reggie White Bears- Hales- No NFL without him Tampa Bay- LeRoy Selmon (sp?) Only HOF the Bucs have in addition to their overall #1 draft choice back in 1976 Cincy- Anthony Munzo Oilers/Titians- Has to be Earl Campbell here....the younger generation really needs to see him play....blows away anything McNair or George ever did in that uniform. kingfish50
It's hard to put just one face with the Redskins. So much tradition and history. Joe Gibbs would have to be at the top as he has brought home 3 lombardies and has rescued us from football hell. Hail to the Redskins! Hail to Joe Gibbs! nonniey
I'd say George Allen could also be in the running for the face of the Redskins.
