that is patently ridiculous to say that it has not harmed the war on terror-

how many dummie terrorists do you know who have heard about the SWIFT program BEFORE it was front page news?

Thanks, but I will trust the reasoned judgement of common sense, our military officers, the White House, Justice Department and FBI.

For g-d's sake, even MURTHA told them not to run it because it would harm national security!!

Of course we don't expect leftists to really care about protecting the country- but don't expect us to swallow your koolaid that the NY Times is some innocent bystander here.

Dude, GWB ran around bragging about how we have freezed terrorist's bank accounts. Of course you didn't have a problem with it then though because Republicans are infallible in your mind.

Here is paragraph 31 of a report by the UN Al Qaeda and Taliban Monitoring Group, submitted in December of 2005. It is available online here :

"The settlement of international transactions is usually handled through correspondent banking relationships or large-value message and payment systems, such as the SWIFT, Fedwire or CHIPS systems in the United States of America. Such international clearance centres are critical to processing international banking transactions and are rich with payment information. The United States has begun to apply new monitoring techniques to spot and verify suspicious transactions. The Group recommends the adoption of similar mechanisms by other countries."

Are you honestly going to sit there and tell me that there are 'dummie terrorists' out there who are not aware of this report with their name on it that has been available for over three and a half years? In six languages, I might add. Maybe the dummies who do the wet work didn't know about it, or haven't heard any of George Bush's speeches in the last 5 years, but the guys who move the money around? Any of them who weren't aware were probably shipped off to a black site in Eastern Europe a long time ago.

Thanks, but I will trust the reasoned judgement of common sense, our military officers, the White House, Justice Department and FBI.

You go right ahead. I've heard that ignorance is bliss. You must be one grinnin' mother****er...

Please don't take this as a specific allegation aimed at you. I'm commenting on your behavior, not just calling you names. On another side note, remember when conservatives in this country didn't trust the government, and liberals did? What happened to those bygone days?

For g-d's sake, even MURTHA told them not to run it because it would harm national security!!

I don't think there is any issue that Murtha cares about more than national security. That's WHY he wants our troops redeployed from Iraq. Murtha, right or wrong, is of the opinion that this administration and this Republican Congress is nothing short of a cluster-**** when it comes to keeping Americans safe. The more troops that are deployed there and the longer they stay, the less safe we are, according to Murtha. He also supports warrentless wiretapping, in case you were wondering. Sorry to intrude on your blissful existance with all these facts.

Of course we don't expect leftists to really care about protecting the country- but don't expect us to swallow your koolaid that the NY Times is some innocent bystander here.

What a great ending to a totally fact-free, logic-free post.

The truth is the Times is an easy target because the slavering Bushists already hate it, and nobody on the left is going to be offended by these reckless allegations because they don't care about the Times one way or another, actually. What some of us do care about we picked up from Thomas Jefferson, Thomas Paine, and some of the other founding fathers, and its called Freedom of the Press. If you'd rather live with a dictator who is not accountable to the people, you've got plenty of choices, but so far, my beloved US of A isn't one of them, and I'm going to do everything I can (which so far mostly consists of rants on an internet message board, but hey, it's a start :)) to keep it that way.

The nuances are wasted here flashback. The right wing only needs to sustain the outrage on this issue until the next thing comes along. The facts of this matter will be forgotten or glossed over, and the only thing that the base will remember or understand is "liberal media=evil traitors."

The elections are still a few months off.
