Jackson says she gained weight for role

Wed May 24, 8:58 PM ET

Janet Jackson, newly svelte after losing 60 pounds, says she gained weight for a role in the upcoming movie "Tennessee," which she ultimately had to pass on because of her new album.

"They (the producers) wanted to see me in a different light, as a heavier woman," the 40-year-old singer, who weighed about 180 pounds at her heaviest, tells Us magazine in an issue on newsstands Friday.

"The timing didn't quite work with trying to finish my album, and unfortunately I wasn't able to do the film," she is quoted as saying. (The role went to Mariah Carey.)

"So I found myself having to take this weight off a lot quicker than I had planned."

Jackson says she packed on the pounds by eating whatever she wanted.

"`Ooh, that looks good, give me that whole slice of cake!' That was the fun part," she says. "(Eventually) I would look in the mirror and I wouldn't recognize myself."

The 5-foot-4-inch Jackson says she got back into shape in four months by eating "nice, balanced meals" and working out with a trainer. Her longtime boyfriend, music producer Jermaine Dupri, was a motivation.

"I've never had someone love me for me, so unconditionally, the way he does, regardless of my size," she says. "He was never any different toward me."

When asked about reaction to her plus-size body, Jackson says, "People didn't treat me differently to my face, but I'm sure they had their whispers behind my back. But I didn't feel bad about myself at all. It was part of my job."

Her latest album, "20 Years Old," is slated for release Sept. 26.

"I feel good," she says. "It wasn't until I saw a picture of myself, just recently, actually, that I thought, `Wow, you really did lose a lot of weight!'"

She adds: "For now, it's just nice for me to get back down to where I feel more comfortable with me."

Yeah, 60lbs in rather unhealthy, even for a role. That's a lot of weight to take off in that amount of time. It probably took a year to lose it all, but she didn't weigh herself for the first six months, so it only seemed like she lost it all in six...

to lose 60 pounds in four months is insane-...

I asked you why you felt it was insane, but you have yet to reply. I am not trying to pick on you, but I am trying to understand what your logic was behind such a bold statement.

60 pounds in 4 months huh? Well "cocaine is a helluva drug".

Huh!?! *sighs* Judgmental, are we?

Why is sixty pounds insane to lose in four months? Four months is aproximately 120 days! That is only a half a pound a day. I don't see where the danger is. You can SAFELY lose 1-2 pounds a day if you try hard enough (depending on your body).

actually, it's safe to lose 1-2 pounds a WEEK, not a day. So in 4 months...a safe amount of weight to lose would be 30 something pounds.... unless you're morbidly obese, then the weight will come off faster. You should not be losing 14 pounds in a week.... that would be what you're saying if you are losing 2 pounds a day.

I didn't say 'everyone' could do it. I said it could be accomplished "depending on your body". However, I do not believe you MUST be obese to lose weight at a more rapid pace than others.

I have lost forty pounds in a month's time under the direction of a trainer and physician. This was without the help of drugs (prescription or otherwise). I worked out vigorously, ate sensibly, and drank a lot of water. I was not obese. I have been eyewitness to many people who have done this very thing with the blessings of both trainer and physician. If this was not a safe practice, then they would not endorse it.

I believe if you lose the weight slower, there is a better chance you will maintain that weight loss. I should also mention, while training in the gym... There was a guy there who was actually smaller than me, but he had to lose weight slower due to a medical condition of some sort. I can't remember what the heck it was (it has been some years).

By the way, with the weightloss she claimed, and in the time frame it allegedly took place, she was roughly losing 3.5 pounds a week. That is not at all bad!

I love how the role of "fat singer" was then automatically handed down to Mariah Carey.

NEVER talk bad about Mariah... I'll put it in words this board can understand...

What Mickalino is to Scott Stapp/Creed Iontop is to Mariah Carey...
