Mass_SkinsFan
I'm looking to get a SIG, are they cheaper at gun shows or specialty ishops? Which model, in what caliber? New or used? Stock or tricked out? For what use (self defense or plinking)? Carry or as a house gun? I own a P226 and a P239, both in 9mm.
codeorama
They are cheaper from a crack fiend on the street.... :paranoid:
Thanos
Crackheads don't sell guns. I'm looking for home security and some range shooting.Caliber low-end basically.
Mass_SkinsFan
I'm looking for home security and some range shooting.Caliber low-end basically. Ok. Here's my take on the topic.... What you should be looking at is a 9mm. SIG offers three main platforms in that caliber. The full-size frame (P226), the compact (P228/229) and the sub-compact fram (P239). If you are looking for a carry gun, I would suggest the P228/229. The P226 is a little large for concealed carry, though it can work for that purpose. The P239 only carries 8+1 rounds so that can be a detracting factor for some people in regards to concealed carry. The P239 is my primary carry gun at this time. In any of these cases, I would suggest going to a gun dealer and seeing how each one fits in your hand and how the weight feels. All three should/may be available in new and used models. If you're not comfortable judging the condition of a used firearm, buy new or bring someone who IS comfortable judging it. I personally suggest the Hogue rubber combat grips and the Trijicon three-dot night sights that are available aftermarket for whichever one you look at buying. Any more questions, I'll be happy to try and answer for you.
grdpounder
Unless your sold on Sig, check out the Springfield XD, I bought a .40 Service when I was home on R&R and I'm going to buy the .45 ACP when I get home in Sept. Great weapons at a good price. :applause:
halter91
I would like to get a new pistol, My Ruger P90 is HUGE!!! It's a nice cheap gun, but not very compact. It still gets the job done!
HOF44
I like the colt officers model .45. It small enough for concealed carry and I just for some reason like .45's better than 9mm's.

HOF44
Mass you will appreciate this. I have a freind who is a gun dealer. He took me out and let me shoot his Barrett .50 calibur sniper rifle. That thing scared me.
joe
Go to a dealer with a shooting range and try out the weapons. It is the only way to be sure. You would not buy a tennis racket or golf clubs without trying them out would you. You probably can get it cheaper at a gun show, but I believe it is worth the extra money to make sure you have a good fit for your purpose. skinsbuck
I've got the Sig P226 and have put a ton of rounds through it and it still feels brand new. I highly recommend it.
Thanos
The SIG has a better fit for my hands. The Beratta is not something I for in the dessert or on the Beltway. The feel is not comfortable for me.
Mass_SkinsFan
Are you not a big fan of the polymer frame SP2022? No. I am not a fan of Combat Tupperware in any of its forms (Glock, XD, Sig Pro, etc...). GUNS are made of METAL, not plastic.

That thing scared me. That is a REALLY NICE rifle. I've had a chance to see and handle one, but I have not had a chance to shoot one. I have, however, had the opportunity to unload a couple rounds from S&W's 500 Magnum revolver. THAT'S a ball breaker.
BlueTalon
I have, however, had the opportunity to unload a couple rounds from S&W's 500 Magnum revolver. THAT'S a ball breaker. I have a Ruger SuperRedhawk in .454 Casull. Something I've done a few times when I've taken someone shooting is load it with .45 Colt with one .454 Casull round in it, give the cylinder a spin, and watch my shooting companion shoot it. It's quite entertaining. Regarding the gun question, a gun show is a good place to buy guns if you've done your homework in advance, but you can potentially make a really bad impulse buy there. A shop gives you a bit more security/piece of mind -- but usually there are many shops represented at gun shows, which gives you the best of both worlds if you buy from one of them there. And you can do a lot worse than a Sig. Personally, if I had to bet my life on one handgun, it would be the H&K USP. (I don't share Mass-Fan's disdain for plastic guns.) I have a USP .45, and it has proven to be absolutely accurate and reliable in all conditions and using all ammo.

They're what is issued to US Air Marshals and armed pilots at this point. If I had to choose one gun to bet my life on, it would be my SIG P226 in 9mm. I've shot thousands of rounds through the gun and the only two issues I've ever had were ammunition, not gun related. I will never tell anyone they have to/shouldn't buy a particular gun if it's what feels right for them. Personally, I've seen too many plasic guns blow up to have real faith in them. Obviously there's a maintenance issue in every case as well, but I just don't want to take the chance. Additionally, if I have to pistol-whip someone, I want a steel frame, not a polymer one. Just my :2cents:
Baculus
I have a Beretta P-92 (M-9) and I am quite happy with it. BTW, I would suggest to read a publication called "Shotgun News" for good price comparisions.
BlueTalon
For a 9mm steel frame, I'd go with the Baretta. I have shot thousands of rounds through mine, and never had a hic-up of any kind. Even my H&K coughed once when I tried using Wolf ammo with the steel cases -- but everything else the H&K swallows whole. And those guns aren't even my favorite guns. I'm a big CZ fan, and have eight of them. But even though they're my favorite, I can tell you that they don't handle unlimited varieties of ammo like the Baretta or H&K. And even though I haven't yet bought a Sig, I have a lot of respect for them. They are well engineered pieces of gear. BTW, if you have an ammo problem, you have a gun problem, at least until you have identified the ammo problem and addressed it. IMO.

Well at least in his attempt to hijack the thread he's making an intelligent, well-reasoned case for gun control. By the way guys, although I don't plan to buy a handgun any time soon, this is good information to keep in my back pocket. Thanks.
