jnhay
Like Bush wearing number 25 wouldn't make just as much money. I say good job NFL voters. Why is it a good job? What's the big deal of letting him have the number?
Jody
He will be allowed to eventually. Too much money to gain. How do you figure that. He already said he will still donate to the fund anyway. It doesn't matter what number he wears, he's still the same running back, who by the way, hasn't proven anything in an NFL game.

It doesn't matter what number he wears, he's still the same running back, who by the way, hasn't proven anything in an NFL game. He will only donate 25% of the 6% of jersey sales that he gets. That's still a much larger chunk for the NFL if they let him wear #
DWinzit
He will get approval to wear the #5 next season. This will allow all fans to purchase his jersey this season, then buy a new one next year with the updated number. It's like all that purchased ST's jersey, then had to buy a new one when he changed numbers. The real number these high profile players change is the number in their financial portfolio. icbmayday
Whats the big deal of him wearing another number he is just another player he isnt the god of football people are already treating him like "king" James what they gonna call him Pres. Bush now he should be like every other player stop crying and play football its just a number.
ArmchairRedskin
Why is it a good job? What's the big deal of letting him have the number? You make an exception for one guy, you have to make an exception for the next guy. Where does it end? Bush can choose any number from 20-49. I think that's plenty. Big Weirdo
It's about style. It's a fashion statement and also it "looks" cool. Any running back can wear 25. But imagine if he's the only running back wearing 5. Do you know how many people are going to run out and get a Reggie Bush No. 5 Saints jersey? Trust me on this guys. I'm young and fashionable. Those number five jerseys would sell like crazy.
bubba9497
He will be allowed to eventually. Too much money to gain. http://www.nfl.com/news/story/9456833 The NFL's competition committee decided at the league's owners meeting here it will not recommend a change to the numbering system for jerseys for the '06 season, and it seems unlikely that it would do so for future seasons. That is true, too. But his would sell the fastest. Not to mention if he has a HOF career imagine the money they would make off of throwbacks. Not to mention if he has a HOF career imagine the money they would make off of throwbacks. his might sell the fastest THIS year. but there will always be the next guy. and IF he has a HOF career? that is a HUGE if, considering he has yet to play a single down of pro ball. on the flip side, say bush sucks or is average. then the NFL looks like a bunch of idiots for changing the rules for an ordinary player. and to the theory that if hes really good they will allow the change next year - if he comes out like a beast his jersey wil be so popular no matter what the number that they would not dare change the rules so he could wear number 5. someone brought up ST changing his number, the difference is both of ST's jersey numbers were within the norm for his position. TD_washingtonredskins
I love that he was denied and hope they don't ever change the rule based on the plea of one player, no matter how talented. The league is so healthy right now and so team-driven at this point that it doesn't need to cater to any one player or all of its superstars. Keep the NFL about TEAM please! TheREALJBird
I figured this would happen, Bush really hasn't had things going his way since around the time of the draft....maybe he'll have a chip on his shoulder come season start

Those are great points - I totally agree. This is one of the reasons I'd really like to see Rich McKay as the next commish, as the team thing seems to be his sentiment judging from the article. - That and the guy's been around the game his whole life. Birdlives
someone brought up ST changing his number, the difference is both of ST's jersey numbers were within the norm for his position. That and the fact that he got to choose from a different pool of numbers because vested veterans like Smoot (who's number he switched to) had left. 36 was what was available the year before. Who Del, don't kid yourself. What looks like a ton of money to us is a drop in the bucket to the NFL owners. They aren't going to change the rules just for a player who hasn't played but one year no matter how dominant they are. Another point. The number system set up as it is helps the refs when making calls. Certain numbers are for certain positions. The refs need all the help they can get. To change the number system for one player undermines the refs abilities to call a solid game(if that ever happens, at least). And finally, Bush may look like a superstar now, at least until next year, or the following years draft. So many players have come up and looked like the next big thing and were so popular coming out of college, Bush isn't as special as people make him out to be. Could he be all world? Of course. In a few years there will be another player who has the same luster coming out of college and no one will remember Bush as he is today. Anybody remember Michael Vick? LiveStrongSkins
Don't bet on it It's inevitable. We're talking millions for the NFL in revenue. Jersey sales will go through the roof with single digit numbers.. the NFL knows it, they just didnt want to look like they were getting shown up by Bush. I believe next year they will vote for it and make it seem like it was their decision. Think of how many people would rush to the stores to pick up a Moss jersey if he went back to number 6.
