zoony
It opens tomorrow... anyond going to see it? I've been looking forward to it... but it sucks to read reviews like this. I was listening to talk radio this afternoon and the reviews of the film there didn't sound good either. Sucks if true... I was looking forward to a great movie http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/12853397/site/newsweek/ A Disappointing 'Da Vinci Code' NEWSWEEK's David Ansen reminds us that just because a novel reads like a movie doesn't mean it should be one. Web Exclusive By David Ansen Newsweek Updated: 3:14 p.m. ET May 18, 2006 May 18, 2006 - The Roman Catholic Church can rest easy. Ron Howard and screenwriter Akiva Goldsman struggle mightily to cram as much as possible of Dan Brown's labyrinthine thriller into a 2-hour-28-minute running time, resulting in a movie both overstuffed and underwhelming. This film is not likely to topple Christianity as we know it, though it could do serious damage to Audrey Tautou's hopes of a Hollywood career. Thiebear
They say its super drama.... I loved the book.. got the illustrated one.. (Watching the Scifi channel debunking of the book right now)... Its a great story but they said only one actor was any good and it aint Tom...
Jumbo
I'll go because of the people involved in the movie and to see for myself. I thought the book was good but over-hyped. I completely divorce myself from any of the "controversy" on any side other than to marvel as usual at what passes for mental agility among some people. zoony
This excerpt from the article above was basically the same thing I heard them talking about on the radio... The movie is so anxious about covering as much of the novel's ground as possible that it never gives the actors any breathing space. That seems like the most common mistake filmakers make when they adapt a book. They feel like they have to cover EVERYTHING... I think it's best just to borrow the outline from the book... Enter Apotheosis
Ever since I read thee book, I've been wondering how you could possibly convert it into film. It's just never struck me as something you can really pull off on the big screen and Tom Hanks is NOT a good choice for Robert Langdon.

Mr. S
they could make the book a movie if it was longer than 2.5 hours. I also though "Angels and Demons" was a better book of his, as well as "Deception Point". "Da Vinci Code" became too overhyped, so yeh, I don't think any movie could live up to the expectations set by the controversey.

I think Angels and Demons is the same as DaVinci....just substitute a few character names and locations and there ya go.... I don't know if I trust the reviews on this one...I did enjoy the book, and since it stayed fairly true (to the book), the movie can't be THAT bad! It almost seems as if it hurts these reviewers brains to actually THINK about a movie...from what I've read at least.

drums and skins
When taking an incredibly successful book like the DaVinci Code and making a film out of it, you will have mixed reviews, and a lot of strong ones against it. I don't think these reviews matter too much.... I think too many people are familiar with the plot and book that they have their own pre-concieved views on how some stuff should play out. That said, I think your average Joe who doesn't know what the book is about (and thus the entire movie would be new to them) will be entertained. Enter Apotheosis
I dunno I think he kind of fits. Who would you have picked? Langdon was supposedly somewhat of an eligible bachelor and, at this point, Tom Hanks really doesn't work for that kind of a persona...
Mr. Nostril
What do you expect from the oscar winning screenwriter responsible for Batman & Robin? Tom Hanks is perfect for an overhyped movie, because he's an overhyped actor. I don't hate Tom Hanks, I just think he gets way too much praise for playing an "every man" well. Deception Point would definitely have been a good summer suspense movie. It's got just the right amount of sci-fi to make it work on the big-screen. @DCGoldPants
Its going to make a buttload of cash, and there will be people who love it because they hate the church, people who hate it because they love the church, and a group that actually bases their review on the actual film. Then, around the early '90's when playing the part of a simpleton, he suddenly started taking himself too seriously. While Saving Private Ryan will always have a special place in my heart, I'd rather thing of Tom Hanks in Bachelor Party.
Xameil
If the critics say it sucks, it must be good. I stil think Harrison Ford looks the part more for some reason yeah he definitely would have fit better. Anyways, I liked Da Vinci code better then Angels and Demons, I haven't read Deception Code yet, but that will be my next one. At 2.5 hours, it is going to be kinda hard to get everything in, but I really listen to critics. I find most of them to be self-righteous, "my crap don't stink" idiots. I know what they are about.... but they are both about searches for something.... both time sensitive, both have a villian (Silas in DaVinci/The Assassin in Angels) both villains are run by uber villians (the teacher/the camerlengo) both have hot chicks partnered with Langdon.... need I go on? (And I own both of the books...read them numerous times)

techboy
Rotten Tomatoes has it at 18% on the Tomatometer, and 11% for the "Cream of the Crop". Ouch. I guess it's a good thing for the film that protesters are giving the film so much free publicity... Sounds like it's going to need it.
