New Jersey continues to just say no to pumping your own gas

After reading this article, I am convinced that people from New Jersey are morons.

N.J. just says no to pumping gas By Charisse Jones, USA TODAY

It's a rainy morning at the Thomas A. Edison Service Area on the New Jersey Turnpike. Lines of idling cars and trucks stretch through a Sunoco station. But for Ardis De Los Santos, there's at least one thing to smile about - she doesn't have to pump her own gas.

She used to live in New York, where she had no choice. But a move across the Hudson River to Englewood, N.J., freed her from the hassle. She likes it that way. "It's not my cup of tea," she says of filling her tank. "It's the smell."

In New Jersey, motorists who need to fill 'er up haven't pumped their own gas in 57 years. But in the face of soaring gas prices, Gov. Jon Corzine came up with a novel plan last month to try to ease the pain: allow self-service at some stations along the New Jersey Turnpike and see if prices dip. He believed prices could drop 5 to 7 cents a gallon.

The last station I ran was in NY in the late 80's. We had full and self service. Self was always a few cents less. That being said, do most folks know how the stage III reclmation system works on pumps in areas of NY, NJ, and other states that have required it since about 1987.

I've seen people who we're use to pumping their own gas, that couldn't get the pump to work for them. It's a vapor recovery systsem, and has a rubber bellows on the nozzle. If the nozzle isn't in far enough, compressing the bellows enough to activate the sensor, the pump will not pump.

People are normally in too much of a rush to actually read directions, so there were many problems when the system first came out. Could you picture the tie ups at the gas stations while people figured it out.

I love having my gas pumped for me in NJ. If I'm in NJ, that means I'm visiting family, on vacation, or on business. Why get my hands dirty. They spend enough time smelling like gas during the week at work.

Let them pump it, it should be done that way everywhere IMO. Very many solid mechanics got their start in the business as a kid pumping gas at a small station with repair bays. We're paying enough for gas, we should at least get some service for the screwing.

As you can tell, I lived in the NY / NJ area many years

whenever i drive back home to VA i drive straight through the NJ turnpike and wait to get gas after the DE memorial bridge. the lines are always huge in NJ, but once you get to DE you can pull right up to an empty pump. having someone pump your gas is nice, but the wait isn't worth it(plus it just doesn't feel right) :2cents:

I generally leave a couple of bucks as tip in NJ.

But it is ridiculous not to allow you to pump your own gas. I have never left the fuel tank open and the cap on top of my car while driving away; however, someone filling up my car once did this and I was halfway down the re-entry ramp before I realized what had happened.

Oregon is the same way.

Always an awkward situation... ESPECIALLY when you have to go inside to buy something.

Do you leave your card with the attendent? Do you pay the attendent first, then go inside? Or can you pay for it all inside? What if you leave your card with the attendent? How are you supposed to pay for the stuff you need inside? Can you pay for the stuff you need inside outside? If not, why not? If so, why so?

All very confusing, and very akward.

Add to this the fact that you can't make left hand turns anywhere in the state... New Jersey is a very strange place.

[sarcasm]

But luckily, the friendly people, beautiful vistas, low cost of living, and beautiful weather will help you to look past the challenges presented to everyday drivers in NJ.

I love not having to pump my own gas.

You can always spot a NJ tourist at a gas station, they're always the ones sitting in their cars waiting for someone to come out..........

You can also spot someone not from New Jersey in New Jersey. They are the ones standing outside of their car at a gas station.

are you supposed to tip those guys?

I never have, but that's just me.

When my Dad moved here from South Jersey in '71, he told me he was surprised no one had ever blown himself up pumping gas because of how "dangerous" it was...

Tip? Ha, never even crossed my mind.

What nobody has mentioned is that even though you have to pump your own South Jersey historically has some of the lowest gas prices in the nation. It has just recently caught up with the rest of the mid-atlantic, but up until about a month ago we would purposely wait until we crossed the bridge to fill up and then always fill up befor the bridge on our way home because it was consistantly 20 to 30 cents cheaper.

That's actually what I do when I go visit family, except that I usually don't take the Turnpike. The family of an ex-girlfriend of mine lived in North Jersey, so we'd usually stop at the last Sunoco on the Turnpike to fill up just because the gas was so much less expensive than home.

This blew me away when I passed through there several years ago too. I always surmised it was due to an inordinately high number of a-holes who drove off without paying. Seems about right.

It's really amazing what people in some states suffer through because they have no idea of how things are done elsewhere. When I lived in PA I was stupefied that you couldn't buy beer in a supermarket, 7-eleven or gas station. People seemed not to care too much but if they tried that here in VA there would be riots.

Some states you don't have to pay income tax, or get your car inspected, etc. And don't even get me started on strip club rules and regulations!

When I moved from Virginia to California, I was suprised that you didn't have to have your car inspected - but after almost 7 years here - nothing shocks me anymore about this state.

:)

We do have to have smog tests every 2 years for cars after they are x (I forget the amount) years old.

Funniest part of that article is the girl who is a college student but doesn't know how to pump gas.

The political shill for the oraganization talking about people might put the gas in the wrong containers or smoke.

Look, the other 48 states can do it, so basically you're saying people in NJ are too fing stupid to pump gas. My 3 year old could probably do it!

And if you've ever stopped to get gas on the NJ Turnpike on a weekend, the lines are ridiculously long cause those guys are in no hurry.
