Senate votes for fence on southern U.S. border

Body votes for 370 miles of fencing, clashes over citizenship

WASHINGTON - The Senate voted to build 370 miles of triple-layered fencing along the Mexican border Wednesday, and clashed over citizenship for millions of men and women who live in the United States illegally.

Amid increasingly emotional debate over election-year immigration legislation, senators voted 83-16 to add fencing and 500 miles of vehicle barriers along the southern border. It marked the first significant victory in two days for conservatives seeking to place their stamp on the contentious measure.

The prospects were less favorable for their attempt to strip out portions of the legislation that could allow citizenship for millions of illegal immigrants and create new guest worker programs.

The Senate acted in a volatile political environment, as the White House struggled for a second day to ease the concerns of House Republicans who contend that President Bush favors amnesty for illegal immigrants.

Thousands of demonstrators massed a few blocks from the Capitol demanding immigrant rights.

Construction of the barrier would send “a signal that open-border days are over. ... Good fences make good neighbors, fences don’t make bad neighbors,” said Sen. Jeff Sessions, R-Ala. He said border areas where barriers already exist have experienced economic improvement and reduced crime.

IRS develops methods to identify tax cheats... tax cheats catch on. Banks have security cameras, robbers hide their faces.

That attitude is crap. We are America for crying-out-loud. Since when did this hand-wringing type of attitude ever stop us. If you put a lock on your car, the criminals will find a way around it... so why not stop it?

This fence should be at least 1000 miles, which will take up 50 % of the border. It's not that hard using technology to detect undergound tunnels... Israel does it all the time.

Immigrants have rights... when they come here legally and go through the processes and procedures to become naturalized American citizens.

Illegal Immigrants do not have rights.... because they are not citizens of the United States and are not covered under the US Constitution. They have human rights... that's for sure.... but they don't have rights to cross our borders illegally, receive free healthcare, get driver's licenses, get voter registration cards, avoid paying taxes, and send half their income back to Mexico in the form of remittances. What's so difficult to understand.

Stand tall Repubs... you've got the high ground. Demand the fence, even if it means sponsoring a seperate bill. If the Dems don't play along... you've got them by the short ones as the Party unwilling to close the borders.

As for amnesty and guest worker rights.... stand tall repubs. A majority of Americans don't want to just hand the citizenship certificate to those already here..... they want them identified, documented, and measuring tools put in place to prove these people are working... paying taxes... and trying to assimilate into the American culture. If the Dems balk... than it's the Dems that want to just legalize 11 million illegals whether we know anything about them or not.

I can't believe the U.S. Senate approved to build fencing along the Mexican border. I think this is a major mistake. All that money could be better spent elsewhere, such as trying to improve our schools and environment.

I'm all for the guest worker programs, and I also believe illegal immigrants should have the chance to gain U.S. citizenship.

I'll say this yet again: We're all immigrants except the Indians.

I assume you are referring to the "Native Americans". Who by the way didn't "start" here, were just here before the evil Euro-white man. In fact, I 'm pretty sure every country is settled by people that at one time or another "immigrated".

In the past I would have supported this, but now i understand much more and am absolutely against a wall or fence.

Increase the quotas to make it easier for the good uys to get in and then use all those extra resources to actually stop the rest who wiould have no reason to come in illegally unless they were up to no good.

No matter what "reform" we institute, we cannot sustain it without controlling the border. You think all the illegals are gonna just stop coming across the border?

I think that if it's easier for those that want to follow the rules and have no ill intent towards us to get in legally, the the truly bad element will be the only illegals and thus we can focus on them easier.

Sarge,

People just don't understand the problem.... freakin' idiots!

Half-assed measures won't work... we need to be aggressive with the border, aggressive with workplace enforcement, and aggressive with the guest worker plan.

I think the Senate is going to move towards this "virtual border" crap... yeah... and I'm going to pay my taxes next year in "virtual money"...

We shouldn't have the national guard there, we should get more border agents. Just like our Troops in Iraq shouldn't be playing policemen, neither should the national guard be playing Border Patrol. We need more Border Patrol Agents who are trained SPECIFICALLY FOR THE JOB. It is a career ya know?

I'd support that if they ease up on the quota restrictions as well.

I think that is a fairly minor point, there is no problem with putting national guardsmen there instead of say more border patrol. There is a decent argument to be made about protecting the borders with the military or in this case the almost military. If this was anything other than the border then I might agree with you, but at this point it might be easier to put the national guard than to train new border patrol. Although, I think putting the national guard there is just something to appease the Bill O'Reillys yammering for military on the border. Basically... that isn't something to get worked up about.
