San Jose Sharks Fans Boo Canadian National Anthem

To me, this is even worse than those morons who scream "Oh!" during our national anthem.

San Jose Sharks fans loudly booed the Canadian national anthem Sunday night before Game 5 of their team's second-round playoff series with the Edmonton Oilers.

The vociferous booing started from the opening notes of singer Annmarie Martin's rendition of "O Canada." While other fans attempted to drown it out by singing along, the boos were audible until the final notes.

Pregame anthem booing was a hot-button issue in sports shortly after the beginning of the war in Iraq, with fans in Chicago's Wrigley Field, Montreal's Bell Centre and other arenas booing their neighbors' anthem from 2002-04.

Its truly sad. Show some respect for another countries anthem. How would they feel if they started booing our anthem, probably outrage. The lack of respect these days is appalling.

Well, apprently I missed the part where the canadians booed our anthem. Dont feel so bad for them now.

I think it was terrible when it was done to ours. I think it is terrible when we do that. Canada has been a pretty good ally and neighbor throughout our histories. Even if they weren't, I was raised to show respect and I believe others should as well.

I don't get it, any particular reason that all those fans, in California no less, decided they wanted to boo the Canadian National Anthem? Maybe it was just an anti-oposing team thing....

Not for sure, but I would imagine that it had to do with the cheap shots that the Edmonton players were taking (and getting away with) in Games 1 & 2.

I was there for a game 2 months ago against Dallas, and every time "Star" was sung, they booed (during the national anthem). I didn't get it until I realized that Dallas was the Dallas Stars.

Either way, I think I it was a misguided "protest".

Being a soccer fan, I'm just not all that shocked by this. International sports see this kind of stuff (and far worse) all the time. It's just considered to be part of the experience.

Compared to other fans US fans are really polite, I mean Americans don't even throw bags of piss at the players

Olds news.... this has happend more than a dozen times from either side.

In the spring of 2002, Philadelphia Flyers fans booed O Canada when the Maple Leafs were in Philly and Detroit Pistons' faithful booed when the Raptors visited.

The Canadian anthem was booed at Yankee Stadium in 1985.

After Game 2 of the 1992 World Series in Atlanta, when the colour guard arrived late and a teenager quickly fastened the flag to the pole and displayed the Maple Leaf upside down, Canadians from coast to coast were upset.

thats Just disrespectful, but on a side not, whats wrong with saying Oh during the National Anthem?

The national anthem is a time to reflect on those before us who gave their lives to make our nation a better place. To scream, "Oh!" cheapens that and is VERY disrespectful.

It wasn't a show of disrespect to Canada, as the media wants you to think. They didn't boo "Oh Canada" in games 1 or 2. It was fans trying to stir up a rivalry with Edmonton, that's it. It's been a very physical series, and San Jose fans are really turning against the Oilers. I'm willing to bet that Edmonton fans will boo the US anthem in game 6 Wednesday night. It doesn't offend me, it's a sports rivalry thing, not a display of people showing hate for the country of Canada.

And if this offends you, don't pay attention to international soccer. You may not like the "Osama" chants that Mexican soccer fans used to yell at the US Men's team, or the "stuff" that Latin American fans throw at our players.

That doesn't make it right. A country's national anthem is sacred and, whether or not you agree with that country's politics, an anthem is something to be honored and respected. If those fans were just "trying to stir up a rivalry with Edmonton," they selected the wrong forum to do so.

I disagree because I believe every person has the right to assign their own meaning to their own words, and that you do not have the right to assign your own meaning to another man's words and then criticize him for what you incorrectly interpreted. That is, if the people yelling "oh" intend it to be a message of disrespect-then it is. If they mean no disrespect by it, then it is not disrespectful.

To me, it's freedom of intent. Some believe in it, many do not.

Wow. So all the people at Orioles games don't respect the anthem? To me it seems a pride thing that adds an extra emphasis to the anthem while simulataneously supporting the team. It doesn't change the words. I remember at Ripken's 2131 game, the guy who sang it (I want to say it was Herbie Han**** but I'm not sure) actually paused, stood up from his piano, and led the crowd with an "oh" and a fist pump. I thought it was pretty cool. I'm sorry if anybody finds this offensive, I've never heard anybody tell me that before though.

So, if I follow the logic of the statement above, someone could use the "n-word" towards me, it wouldn't be considered disrespectful because they may not have meant no disrespect. The act itself is disrespectful, intent or not.

Edit: It's about the proper etiquette that should be displayed during ANY anthem's playing:

When the national anthem is played or sung everyone must rise and stand at attention. Men should remove their hats and place them over their hearts, while others simply place their right hand over their hearts.

man I remember the president saying "Oh" when he through out the first pitch at Camden Yards in '92. When did this become disrespectful? What about the Atlanta Braves fans who scream "Braves!" at the end of the anthem? Same thing?
