Blondie
how did they manage to get a trademark on such a generic term anyways. It is not a generic term here in Texas. EVERYONE here knows it belongs to my beloved AGGIES. You would never hear a Texas Longhorn fan talking about the 12th man. Blondie

However, apparently its different in Texas. There are all sorts of things like that - and not just in sports. I do like their explanation for how the phrase came about to be used. I also think Seattle retiring the #12 was pretty cool.

The Aggies thought they owned it and perceived it to be theirs when in fact it was a national phenom. I think that this was the best compromise available. It should tell you about the history of the Seattle franchise that they have to make up reasons to retire numbers. It makes sense considering they only have one Hall of fame player in Steve Largent. You'd think that over 30 years you might be able to squeeze out at least two.

stat2883
I think they should retire Bosworth's # --seriously though, I did like Curt Warner in his day, but he wasn't worthy of a retired number IMO

I think that this was the best compromise available. Actually, since they had to give permission for Seattle to use it, I guess that means they DID own it. Maybe you need to read the article again....... As part of the agreement, the Seahawks acknowledge Texas A&M's ownership rights of the trademarked phrase and The Aggies hold a federal trademark rights to "12th Man." Jaron
I think this is really stupid imho. I'm going to try to trademark the phrase "Lets go", so only I am allowed to say it. Everyone else that uses that phrase at a football game, baseball game, or whatever will have to pay me.

Everyone else that uses that phrase at a football game, baseball game, or whatever will have to pay me. I guess when this first started in 1930 something........it was something special. In fact, if the Aggies had not started it, who is to say the 12th man would be here today. For everyone who thinks something is stupid......there are those who are PART of the tradition and think it is special. Blondie

Sarcasm early this morning, huh? I was trying to make a point about the fact an Aggie coined the phrase and how big it is today. But thanks for the remark. Made my day........and it is early too!! Not addressing you personally, just think it's funny that the team's player's merits can't get them more than one Hall of Famer and one retired number. You've got to love having to come up with a gimmick to retire a number.

Blondie you're welcome Really though, an aggie might have coined the phrase, and i'm sure he's in the MENSA hall of fame for it, if there is such a thing. But if that special man hadn't had the magical abilty to count his fingers AND toes, and translate that skill into counting the amount of aggie players on the field AND ADDING ONE(!!!)... do you really think no one else would have come up with an at least similar slogan? I think that this was the best compromise available. Actually the settlement showed that Seattle agreed that the Aggies own the right to the phrase which is why Seattle is paying A&M a large one time licencing fee and a smaller annual licencing fee.
