RiggoReincarnated
1972: Cowboys vs Redskins 1980: Cowboys vs Eagles 1982: Redskins vs Cowboys (10 year wait) 1986: Redskins vs Giants (4 year wait) We are at 20 years and counting since an NFC East battle for the title of conference champion. Whats amazing is that we have Gibbs and Parcells, still coaching in the same division. It would go down in the annals of NFL history if another matchup were to happen 20 years later...would just illustrate the longevity of their greatness. Do you think the new playoff format of only allowing in 2 non-division champions has kept this from happening since 1986, or just the parity of the league in general? Last time this came fairly close was during the 1991 season, but the Cowboys didn't hold their end against the Lions. I remember being disappointed at not getting the chance to play the Cowboys for the NFC title that year. It always adds an extra dimension/fire to the game. hail2skins
It'd be interesting to see how many times since 1986 that conference championship games have featured matchups between teams from any divisions. Seems like every year in the playoffs they bring up the stat on how much of an advantage the home teams have in the divisional round of the playoffs, which means wild-card teams don't usually advance past that round. Of course, this past season two road teams (Pitt and Carolina) won during that round. One of the examples Riggo mentioned (1982) came during a strike year, and the Cowboys played their two playoff games before the NFCCG at home that season. nathanevans
Interesting post. . .it would certainly add spice to go against one of our NFC East rivals to win the NFC Championship. It would be fantastic for it to be Gibbs v Parcells, and to crush the Cowgirls as we steamroller into the Superbowl.
pvkeeper19
2000-2001 AFC Championship....Titans vs Jaguars It was actually '99-'00, but who's counting? Since the AFC-NFC format (adopted in 1970 after the AFL-NFL merger): 1971 - Colts vs. Dolphins (AFC East) 1977 - Raiders vs. Broncos (AFC West) 1980 - Raiders vs. Chargers (AFC West) AND Cowboys vs. Eagles (NFC East) 1982 - Jets vs. Dolphins (AFC East) 1983 - Seahawks vs. Raiders (AFC West) 1985 - Patriots vs. Dolphins (AFC East)

Bostic Hog
As a season ticket holder, I am very excited to have an NFC championship game in DC -- we need HOME playoff games in '06-'07. HTTR
