The Evil Genius
Ahem TK (and Code I think). http://news.yahoo.com/s/usatoday/20060504/en_usatoday/starwarsgoesbacktobasics 'Star Wars' goes back to basics By Mike Snider, USA TODAY Thu May 4 Die-hard Star Wars fans soon can see the original theatrical versions of the first three Star Wars films on DVD. Even though George Lucas adamantly declared 2004's digitally restored Star Wars Trilogy DVDs the definitive versions of his movies, fans have held out hope for DVDs of the originals. Their wishes will be granted Sept. 12 when Fox releases new two-disc DVDs ($30 each) of Star Wars (since retitled as Episode IV: A New Hope), The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi that include the films as they first appeared in theaters, along with the new, restored versions (now available in the four-disc $70 Star Wars Trilogy). more after link
SkinsBry
In a Star Wars related story, I saw on the news this morning that there a George Lucas Stormtrooper coming out. It's a Stormtrooper and when you take off the helmet, it's Lucas' head. Can anyone say Collectors' Item?
rebornempowered
That's awesome. I usually hate people stealing from me but in this case I will accept it with open wallet.

SkinsOrlando
I'm happy about this since I hate the fact he tinkered with those movies. Unfortunately I broke down and bought the trilogy dvd's already and now I'm gonna have to shell out some more bucko's for these unless I want to watch the originals on that thing called VHS. Henry
Just read about that myself. Han shoots first, baby! Not to nitpick, but they'd better offer the original originals in widescreen. They do that and I'll be willing to suck it up and buy their triple-platinum new-edition spectaculars to get them. See? I can compromise.
iheartskins
The new endings to the movies make Sol very angry. How can you replace Hayden Christiansen at the end of RoftheJ. Ruined that scene. Among many others. Glad that Fox has the intelligence and marketing savvy to realize that Star Wars fans want the real movies on DVD.

zoony
Wow. Nobody can milk a cow like Lucas. Not to nitpick, but they'd better offer the original originals in widescreen. They do that and I'll be willing to suck it up and buy their triple-platinum new-edition spectaculars to get them. Not right away... Lucas will wait for sales to taper off and then re-introduce it in widescreen. ...
Mr. Nostril
I've been holding out for this. People kept telling me that it would never happen, and that I should give in and buy the special editions. But I assumed Lucas had to give into the demands eventually. So, for once in my life, I was right.

If this report is wrong, I guess I'll still be waiting for a Star Wars DVD worth buying. And that's definitely not nitpicking. It's a huge issue. It's been so long, did Greedo even shoot at all in the original? I have a memory of Han just murdering him in cold blood. which was cool

Here is how the conversation went.. Lucas: I need more money.. How else can we package Star Wars? Lacky: Condoms? um Baked Beans?! ummmm Star Wars Spinning Dubs!? Oh wait how about we put the original theatrical releases of star wars on DVD? Lucas: But I said I wouldn't do that. Lacky: You'll make money Lucas: w00t! But I assumed Lucas had to give into the demands eventually. So, for once in my life, I was right. You and me both. I even acquired the laser-disc version burned onto DVDs so I could have an original widescreen version to watch. But I'd love to get a DVD-quality original version. Henry
i'm a little confused. so what is the difference between this set and the one the box set i got for xmas? Over the years Lucas has added scenes, changed some of the special effects and, most recently, altered dialogue to better fit in with the prequels. I can appreciate the effort, but I'd like to be able to watch the versions that came out in the theatres 30 years ago, in widescreen on DVD. Until now, Lucas refused to do it. He claimed that the 'new' versions were the only legitimate versions of the movie and basically pretended that the 'original' versions didn't exist. I don't hate the new versions, but I refuse to buy them until Lucas offers the old versions as well.

ntotoro
I read elsewhere that the audio would also be Dolby 2.0. Guess it makes sense, since 5.1 or 6.1 surround wasn't originally used on the audio tracks. As long as it's restored, that's all that matters to me. It seems a bit lazy to me. They already have a 5.1 mix of the movies. Just cut out the special edition stuff and give us a 5.1 track.

With todays technology, I believe they can remaster Dolby 2.0 to 5.1 or 6.1. Anyways, I can't believe this many people actually prefer the original editions of ANH, TESB and ROTJ to the Special Editions. If you prefer cheesy special effects, transparent ****pits or the white boxes around spaceships go right ahead, I'll continue to enjoy my Special Editions. But I'm still gonna buy the original versions in September. I know, I'm a sucker for anything Star Wars.
