Best and worst of the second round

BEST PICK

1. Philadelphia Eagles: Winston Justice, T, USC — Justice had the best vertical jump of any lineman at the combine, and he outdid himself at USC's pro day. Yes, cynics will call him a workout warrior and wonder how often offensive linemen are called upon to jump straight up in the air, as high as they can. But Justice is a phenomenal athlete, a major reason for the college success of Reggie Bush and Matt Leinart, and a player who will make Philadelphia better. After the Eagles considered taking him in the first round, they got a steal in the second round.

WORST PICK

Washington Redskins: Rocky McIntosh, LB, Miami — The Redskins gave up way too much to move into position to select McIntosh with the 35th pick, sending the Jets a second-round pick (53rd overall) and a sixth-round pick (189th overall) plus next year's second-round pick. All for a small linebacker who has trouble fighting off blocks. And McIntosh is the Redskins' only pick on the first day of the draft.

Arent we all used to the media bashing by now? Its no biggie, we just roll with the punches...all I know is we get a future starting caliber LB, I am good with that.

It's funny how people will concentrate on the negative, but not the fact that Rocky fills a need. This is what the experts say about Rocky:

"McIntosh quickly flashed his athleticism and consistently made plays all over the field. He is a very quick, smooth athlete who plays very well behind the line of scrimmage and can adjust to make plays out in space. He has the quick burst off acceleration and playing speed to catch fast running backs in pursuit before they can turn the corner on outside runs. He has the playing speed to cut behind blockers and chase down plays from behind. His versatility is what makes McIntosh so valuable because he will be a force against the run at him, runs away and in all types of pass coverage. He needs to bulk up and add 10-15 pounds to play stronger at point of attack and must improve his use of hands vs. low blocks in order to move through traffic well in the NFL. Overall, McIntosh is the type of linebacker who often gets a little overlooked because he is slightly undersized and does not make a lot of big, flashy plays, but in the end, he is going to develop into a very good all-around linebacker who can stay on the field for all three downs and is consistently productive vs. the run and the pass."

Rocky also has the frame to get bigger, so he is more effective at the point of attack. ESPN compared him to Kieth Bullock. I like the skill set that he brings to our defense. Although I don't like us mortgaging our future, this is a pretty sound move to get a good player. Plus he's a player from the U, and they have a sound reputation of producing excellent LB's.

Didn't we also catch hell for passing on Winslow and drafting Taylor?

We could have drafted Reggie Bush with the #53 pick, and these mediots would find something wrong with it "yeh, but how are the Redskins going to pay for a guy with that kind of salary, they'll be in cap hell in 2009"

Anyone find it ironic he praises Justice for the highest jump of a lineman (a ridiculous stat, when is a lineman ever going to have to jump anyways?), yet conveniently ignored that McIntosh had the highest jump of any LB (linebackers actually do jump!). Can you say bias?

I completely agree that Justice was the best pick of the second round, but McIntosh is going to be a helluva player as well. The kid can easily gain 15 pounds without sacrificing speed or quickness. He is very smart, has good instincts, and is faster than the 4.6 he put up at the combine.

Ironically the Redskins price for moving up was cheaper than any the three teams that moved up right behind us paid. Some people can't get around the value of future picks versus current picks. To them a 2d round next year holds the same value of a 2d round this year. Essentially the Skins traded an 06 3rd and 6th to move up but these writers still can only see a 2d (The Pats right behind us traded a significanlty move valuable 2006 3rd to move up).

this **** is like clockwork... i can GUARANTEE that he turns out to not be the worst pick of the second round, and will be worth whatever we traded for him (which isn't even THAT much... we basically just gave away a 6th rounder, since next years 2nd is like this years 3rd -- which is what the pats gave to move up and i think the falcons gave up too)
