Redskins Fan Hoping Sean Taylor Puts His Past Behind Him

I know some posters will not like this thread. Some are huge fans of Taylor, as I am.

I am also cognizant of the fact that young people make mistakes and use poor judgement at times. Having said that, I sincerely hope that Taylor can put his somewhat checkered past behind him.

I am bothered by the two counts of assualt w/firearm, plus the misdemeanor simple battery charge(even though he filed not guilty of these in 2005). And, to boot, the infamous spitting incident in the Tampa Bay playoff game.

Where I come from, only a punk spits on people, regardless of circumstances.

When you put on the uniform of the Washington Redskins, you represent the finest organization in professional football, not to mention professional sports.

Coach Gibbs always says: "Win with style". Sean Taylor needs to learn this and come to represent the Washington Redskins in a more positive manner.

To whom much is given, much is expected.

With a few exceptions, in my lifetime the Redskins have employed players with not only superior talent, but charactor as well. The way you carry yourself and live your personal life is far more important than how hard you can hit a reciever crossing the middle.

All the best Sean. Here's one fan who hopes you can turn the negatives into positives!

Hail To The Redskins!

I was a little disappointed with the spitting thing, but I think with Gibbs to guide him, he will turn out really well.

What past? Seriously.

Edited to add that I hope he leaves Florida. It seems all the law enforcement down there are either incompetent or jealous of his notoriety. Can you guys get some perspective and realize that one incident does not a "past" make?

Anyone catch the NFL network recap of that game? After actually hearing what he was saying throughout the game, Im a big fan of the head ref in Tampa. Save for the fact that he only kicked out Taylor. All the other refs were saying "you sure the other guy stays in?". Taylor may or may not have spit on the guy intentionally but he turned around and punched Taylor in the face. Ive had similar misunderstandings (like whether or not I ALMOST intentionally hit some guy with a volleyball twice in a meaningless high school gym game) so I dont know what to think about that incident. They both probably ought to have been kicked.

Anyway, as regards the current charges against him. Ive threatened people over as little as $5 being stolen from me. (Id of loaned it to whomever if he asked) If some street thug ever steals something really big from me and I know who did it, Ill be hard pressed to deal with the slow inefficient court system as opposed to nearly killing those involved or at the very least scaring them into knowing better.

In any event, I should probably lay off the illegally consumed beer if I plan on posting on such a popular board. Main point is, I was at that game in Tampa and Ive seen the game of the week video but Im not sure what really happened. Also, his court case has been such a debacle that he really deserves a mistrial. I heard the guys posting those charges against him actually got arrested for stealing someone else's atv just a few weeks later. If so, I dont get why they arent on trial.

Even so, Ill agree that if Taylor wants to represent the Redskins and Gibbs, he deffinitely needs to avoid pointing guns at anyone in addition to making sure he doesnt spit on anyone, on purpose or otherwise.

None of that off the field stuff matters. Taylor has always been a beast everytime he stepped on the field and that will continue as long as he's part of this team. It's very unlikely he will have to go to jail, and I'm sure he has learned from the spitting incident.

I suppose you could be concerned, if you considered Floridas law to even be apropriate. We live in a gun fearing culture. The mere mention of the word "gun" can get you thrown in jail practicaly. There have been cases where someone was attacked, or an attempted robbery took place, the victim brandished a firearm, and was then thrown in jail for it. I think Florida law is out of bounds in this area. As far as I know Taylor only brandished a firearm, and did not fire it at all, there sort of is a big difference. As far as im concerned, he didnt do anything wrong. Unless you want to make the case the government always makes the right law, which we all know is bull.

I can fault a man for spitting in anothers face, and even though I tried to defend ST for it I knew he was in the wrong. However, Someone starts steeling your property, and you take matters into your own hands, sorry, I see no wrong in that.

Sorry, you don't have the right to be judge and jury. You don't have the right to put MY safety at risk, because you want to play vigilante. If it happens on your property then by all means do what you got to do to protect it, but once you leave you property you need to let the police do their job.

on the football field he has never shown any issues with his past. He is the best player on our defense, and probably our whole team. This subject is tired, leave it to the rest of the NFL fans to ramble about it

I don't think its tired at all. I think with the return of coach Gibbs, comes a return of what football should be... I am so proud to be a Redskin fan everytime I see coach Gibbs talk, everytime I see Springs and Jansen on MNL and the way "our" team "fights their guts out". Taylors actions are definately not what this organization stands for.

I think that when you have someone as talented as Taylor is, it's a shame to see some of the things he has done so far:

-Skipping Rookie Symposiums

-Not attending the workouts, even if they are voluntary

-Spitting at a player

-Being charged with a felony

I am not saying that he a bad person or anything like that, but when we have an organization where character is one of the most important player attributes, this laundry list is discomforting. Do I think he is growing up, yes. Do I think that Gibbs and Williams are helping him to be a better man, yes. But just because someone is amazingly talented doenst mean we should "accept" this previous behavior.

Where have all the D. Greens and Art Monks gone? When did becoming a punk turn into the way in which you are looked at as a bad ass? How about let your play on the field tell everyone you are for real and when you are off the field be the role model and citizen you should.

I agree with OP. Taylor is a dominant force on the football field, and his play often makes me giggle like a little schoolgirl. But a lot of the decisions he has made to date that do not include his on-field play are very questionable. I have to say that whereas I'm selfishly pleased that Taylor roams our defensive backfield, I am not yet proud that he is a Washington Redskin.

Two entirely different things, in my opinion. Based on some of his actions to date, Taylor is, for me, a guilty pleasure.
