'PROGRESSIVE' MEDIA STALLS: 'AIR AMERICA' IN AUDIENCE PLUNGE IN NYC, LEFTIST'DAILY KOS' BOOK SELLS ONLY 3,600 COPIES

Wed Apr 26 2006 11:39:51 ET

Left-leaning new media has hit turbulence at the marketplace, newly released stats show. A book hyped by major media as documenting a progressive revolution of "blogs" and political power, DAILY KOS 'CRASHING THE GATE,' has sold only 3,630 copies since its release last month, according to NIELSEN's BOOKSCAN.

[NIELSEN claims only 2,062 copies of DAILY KOS have been purchased at the retail level; the rest coming through 'discount' outlets.]

Meanwhile, the just released radio Winter Book [Jan-Mar 2006] from ARBITRON shows AIR AMERICA in New York City losing more than a third of its audience -- in the past year! Among all listeners 12+, it was a race to the bottom for AIR AMERICA and WLIB as mid-days went from a 1.6 share during winter 2005 to a 1.0 share winter 2006.

During PM drive, host Randi Rhodes plunged to 27,900 listeners every quarter hour, finishing 25th place in her time slot, down from 60,900 listeners every quarter hour in the fall. A network source says the radio ratings released today do not reflect the overall growth of the broadcast.

"The demos are better, and listerners trust AIR AMERICA to give them the real truth on issues and the Bush presidency," says the insider.

It doesn't necessarily mean they are spouting lies and disinformation. It could just mean they suck.

Watch the HBO special 'Left of the Dial', it catches the producers and hosts in horrible lies. Im not talking about political lies, Im talking about their money situations and viewer numbers. Its so funny.

I just shows that liberals can read and think for themselves. They don't need to suck at the talk radio teat 24/7 so some blatant ideologue can tell them what to think about issues they don't understand themselves, and alert them to what new out-of-context issue to be outraged about today. :)

I guess I'll link this thread I just started.

Sure, rationalize their failure anyway that makes you feel better.

You know, I'm kind of enjoying this. I can see why the righties do so much simplistic trolling on this board - it is very liberating.

Thanks for the laugh. Hey, anything to make you feel better huh?

To tell you the truth, I listened to Air America, and I didn't enjoy it. It used the emotional "those guys are the enemy" approach and it just didn't ring true to me.

I'm a liberal, but I think things are a lot more complicated most of the time than people are willing to accept from either side of the spectrum. Radio is too black and white - I prefer to read.

Should this go in the "out of context thread"? You do realize that Mill made this statement in an era when the two terms were polar opposites of one another, right? Sorta back fired on ya.

Conservatives have always been conservatives and righties. They just used to be democrats. I'm afraid I don't get your point?

I don't like Air America it's irritating. Sirius left is much better, easier to listen to, more professional. But then again I listen to Patriot Radio, AM and Fox radio too. Good to hear all sides.

I tried listening to Air America on XM radio and I found them to be boring and unprofessional. Lots of dead air, people I've never heard of talking about themselves and their private lives, and not enough discussion of current events. They were not heavy hitters on the issues. The right wingers are much better at rallying the base, because their base is much easier to manipulate, and they have a more unified message because they all take direction straight from the same source, Republican leadership. It's not that I disagree with Air America, it's that I would rather listen to sportstalk 980 or Washington Post radio.

Yup. I don't listen to Air America cause I don't roll with the radio, and I feel good enough about my beliefs that I don't need to rationalize it by how many people agree with me. Otherwise I would vote strictly along "American Idol" lines.

The reason why conservative radio is more successful is because they are more convincing then liberal radio.

http://www.reference.com/browse/wiki/Liberalism

United States: The primary use of the term liberal is at some variance with European and even British usage. The common meaning of liberal has evolved over time. In the 19th century it was not a common term in American philosophy or politics, partially because the two main parties were a mixture of populist and nationalist elements. The Democratic Party was the party of free trade, low tariffs and laissez-faire entrepreneurialism, while the Republican Party advocated national citizenship, transparency and a stable currency. However, more than in other countries, United States liberals adopted in the 20th century an agenda in which individuals have a right, as members of the community, to expect that the community will regulate and influence the economy as a means to achieve social justice. This was a consequence of the choice of American liberals for Franklin D. Roosevelt's New Deal, influenced by the ideas of British economist John Maynard Keynes, therefore leading liberalism to be identified with the so-called "welfare state". The absence of social democratic forces and the necessity to prevent social unrest strengthened this development. After World War II, the term "liberal" was expanded to include all left-of-center (but anti-Communist) politics, particularly new liberalism. As McCarthyism made the terms socialism and even social democracy anathema in the U.S., the former New Dealers and others to the left of center adopted the name liberal. To distinguish themselves from these, those in the U.S. who were closer to classical liberalism, adopted the name libertarians. The term libertarian is now used with similar meaning in a few other countries, but elsewhere, especially in Spain, it refers to libertarian socialists. Since approximately the Reagan era, the word liberal has been so much used as a derogatory term by U.S. conservatives that it led to an ever increasing number of critics of conservatism to label themselves as progressives rather than liberals. Skeptics to the right and left have suggested that this is a distinction without a difference, and motivated by an attempt to distance themselves from their own failed and unpopular policies of the 1960s.

Its easy to convince people that they're working hard, doing a good job, and shouldn't have to help those in need. Its just funny when those people who used to listen to jerks like Rush would nob their heads and agree....until they are laid off in middle America. Then they become the very people Rush was slamming, and the very people they hated.

But for now, its easier to just say its the fault of single mothers and democrats, and that you don't need to contribute anything else to better the country.

so you are admitting NPR is liberal?!!

wow, a lefty who can admit the truth. better duck though, the rest of the moonbats claim that there is only "unbiased" media and then "conservative" media

I think it is hilarious that even lefties can't stomach Air America. If you guys can't take it, what is their business plan for making money?!!

And remember your DNC talking points: the reason liberal radio doesn't work is because the "issues are too complex to discuss in just a few minutes"

Like I said in the thread I started...are they more convincing? or just more entertaining? I'm leaning towards the latter.

I listen to conservative radio sometimes. Why? For entertainment. Not at all because they make convincing arguments. So I'm guessing there are more listeners like me, who conservative media moguls can't legitmately nor genuinely claim as "loyal listners."
