Skins get first-round bye

Washington made a splash in free agency, but still needs to find a starter at weak-side linebacker, perhaps in next weekend's draft.

BY MICHAEL C. WRIGHT

April 23, 2006

There's optimism in watching a guy wearing your favorite team's cap while holding up a No. 1 jersey as a first-round pick.

Sadly for Washington fans, it's not a scene they'll see Saturday when coverage begins of the NFL draft.

The Redskins last year gave up a first-round pick in this weekend's draft to acquire former Auburn quarterback Jason Campbell with the 25th pick. Washington doesn't make its first selection of the 2006 draft until the second round (53rd overall).

After that, the club doesn't pick again until the fifth, sixth and seventh rounds. Washington isn't concerned. The club addressed its most glaring needs through free agency by acquiring receivers Brandon Lloyd and Antwaan Randle El, safety Adam Archuleta, defensive end Andre Carter and cornerback Kenny Wright.

10 years ago this pap would have passed for in-depth discussion of the 2006 Washington Redskins. Sadly, for the rest of the league and even serious NFL fans who do NOT follow the Redskins closely enough to see the Grand Canyon sized holes in this guy's piece, I'm sure it still does.

Can you imagine the response this thing would get on this board if a fan of another team were to post it? He'd be laughed and swarmed off the board. Yet because it's a "news article" in the "mainstream media," it seems to carry some weight.

Strange new world we live in.

Om makes a good point. If this were posted as a thread, a posters own words, he would be laughed at and ridiculed :-P So there is hope left for all the people on these boards who want to become sportswriters. Even the worst of the posters on ES have the talent neccesary to succeed in the sportswriter profession.

Winning shuts many mouths and dries many pens...

I hope to start cataloging some of this tripe in order to re-visit at a later time...

1. All the teams in the East will suffer a significant challenge if their starting quarterbacks go down. The Redskins situation with Brunell is not unique.

2. Outside linebacker is a spot where capable players can be found in the draft and some later than the second round. What is funny overall, is that the Redskins won the Super Bowl with guys like Neal Olkewicz, Rich Milot and Mel Kaufman playing significant roles and these guys were either undrafted free agents or late round draft picks.

LaVar Arrington's presence here in Washington from 2000-2005 is evidence that having a high profile, high draft pick at LB does not a great defense or team make. Especially when that linebacker does not fit into the team concept.

3. I was actually more worried about the team being able to find a capable veteran to bring in as the #3 corner as the Redskins really had nothing behind Springs and Rogers after Harris was released. Jimoh was not an option. The fact the team was able to sign Wright for a decent price and provide insurance at the critical corner spot is huge for this club.

4. Whether the team drafts a linebacker or not I would not be surprised to see the Redskins bring in another veteran before camp to compete for a spot. You are going to see a capable vet or two released in the period after the draft leading up to camp as teams decide to save money and go with younger players at certain spots. The starter for the Skins could end up being someone not on the radar screen right now.

Williams very rarely starts rookies right away, so I would anticipate seeing that #53 pick LB not starting until mid-season as with Taylor and Rogers the past 2 years.

it is hard to say if carlos would have started right away in 2005. he was hurt in preseason, i believe he was coming off a stress fracture? so i think that is why he didnt start. it was very clear walt harris was not the answer at CB, so im wondering if his injury was what kept him on the sideline

Actually, Walt Harris held up pretty well early on. It was only after the Giants game that people were calling for his head.

Sean Taylor only started early because Andre Lott went down with an injury.
