Thinker's Pre-Draft Roster Analysis

As we head into the draft, here is how I look at our roster. First, as has been noted elsewhere, we have done very well in free agency to fill most of our holes after a darn good season last year and not losing much this off-season – we only lost Royal, Clark, and LaVar. All of the following is based on no injuries (something no one can avoid but won’t dwell on it here). We probably return 9 starters on offense – and if Cooley starts at te then our only new starter is likely to be our #2 wr. That’s pretty good. On defense we actually return 10 starters (since Holdman started last year). Obviously we anticipate Carter moving in as a starter, a new wlb and Arch starting at ss. That’s pretty good too. To me the success of the season will hinge on the qb position and depth to account for any injuries. Having said that below I’ll list my notional depth chart at this early point to show that it’s a good thing we don’t have a lot of high picks because we don’t really have a lot of spots on the roster.

QB: Brunell

Campbell

Collins

Bramlet

RB: Portis

Betts

Rock

Lumsden

Combs

Carter

FB: Sellers

Nemo

White

TE: Cooley

Fauria

Johnson

Powell

WR: Moss

Lloyd

Randle El

Patten

Thrash

Jacobs

Brown

Cash

Farris

Harris

Johnson

Smith

Ward

OL Rabach

Dockery

Jansen

Samuels

Thomas

Walter

Molinaro

Pucillo

Ndukwe

Woodard

Alston

Jones

If we went in to the season with only players from this list I’d feel pretty good. In the draft I’d expect us to pick up an extra te and olineman in the late rounds.

DL: Carter

Daniels

Wynn

Griffin

Salave’a

Evans

Boschetti

Killings

Jones

Clemons

Guthrie

Riley

LB: Washington

Marshall

Holdman

Clemons

Campbell

McCune

McNeil

Sykes

CB: Springs

Rogers

Jimoh

Wright

Patterson

Morton

Williams

S Taylor

Archuleta

Prioleau

Burns

Except for depth, I’d be real pleased to go into the season with this list except for the uncertainty about wlb. Here in the draft, I’d expect that we will be looking for a good lb and depth at cb and safety.

Special teams:

LS: Allbright

P: Frost

K: Hall

This is an OK lineup. I fully expect we’ll pick up an additional P and K for camp. Possible late rounders or udfa’s.

If you look at the roster and count to 53, you’ll see that we don’t really have many roster spots for developmental players. I think we’ll keep 9 db’s so there’s a possibility a cb or s could still be added. I think it’s likely we’ll also add another safety later in camp as other teams make cuts. We’re loaded with dlinemen who’ve shown they can do the job and we have a bunch of lb’s – not clear who’ll emerge as the starter on the weak side. Perhaps a draft position that has the greatest chance to make the team will be a kicker or punter.

So if you look at the roster (setting aside injuries) I think we should feel great going into the draft knowing we don’t HAVE to get anything and we’ll still have a strong team. We’ll be looking to find some better backups than we have now.

Same here, I'm sure CB is the first concern and will probably be the first pick we use, but I think we have lost some focus on the O-line depth, this area is just as critical as it is for CB depth, luckaly the draft has some depth at CB. I really hope we grab a good O-lineman with the next pick.

I would love to see this guy in a skins uni.

OL- Ryan O'Callaghan from California

This guy is one of the major BIG reason's J.J Arrington got 2,000 yards.

This kid is "INTENSE"!

Solid initial depth chart thinker.

I still view our lack of reliable third corner to be a potentially MAJOR problem. As a result, I wouldn't be surprised to see us go after another CB in the draft.

I whole heartedly agree.... corner is the important postion of the draft this year

I agree iheartskins, I think we're going to go CB or LB depending on who the best player available is. Barring any major injury we seem to have plenty of talent on the roster and a Brain Trust in the coaching department. As a reasonable man, I like our chances of winning the NFC.

I second that my friend. If it all comes together then i see us winning the division with the Giants a close second.

However, if we could trade our first and second next year and our 7th this year for a top ten pick this year, id be happy. We could aquire a lb first round then a cb second round.

I would go 1st and second next year to ge a CB, then go with an Lb or De in the second

I don't quite understand your post, but if it means trading futures to go with our second this year so that we'll come out with first class cb and wlb now I'm in total agreement. I'd go so far as to dangle Patten and TJ as well (I hear there are still wackos out there who think TJ will eventually cut it.)

The position of need that pops out is safety but that would only be for competition at the number 4 (and maybe number 3). Further, a 53-man roster spot is open here.

We might be able to strengthen corner through the draft and need to think about finding a guy who can start at some point. Same is true for LB, we need more camp depth, we might be able to improve 53-man depth and we need somone who can start now or in the near future.

To be ready for camp (assuming no pre-camp cuts), we'll need to find bodies for every position except QB an WR.

You don't like Wright?

I don't like him as a starter (as he was in Jacksonville) but as a 3rd guy, he's pretty solid...good size, good tackler, aggressive, and physical.

For me, a CB wouldn't be for this year; it would be to eventually replace Springs.
