If you are Joe Gibbs, what is the super smart and wise thing to do for Taylor Jacobs?

    • Cut and dump TJ like a smelly, wet cockroaches in AUG 2006.
    • Show case TJ by playing him as a 2nd starting WR and trade him away before the trading deadline.
    • Be creative and out of the box oriented by converting Taylor Jacobs to backup ( SAFETY or CB ).

The Redskins are always getting called on the carpet by the mediots, but did you read this signing today by dah Bears? Talk about overpaying. The Bears signed nickel CB Ricky Manning to a RFA contract that will pay him $21 million over 5 years and $7.5 million the first year. Manning is only 5-8.4 inches tall and started only 4 games last year! He was good in the 2003 playoffs, but what has he done lately? With the zebras cracking down on chucking WR's beyond 5 yards, his 5-8 size is more of a liability now. I bet you that Carolina doesn't match the contract.

Anyway if the Bears wind up with Manning -- which should happen -- they are more likely to trade their pick to the Skins or at the very least they will not be drafting a CB with their 26th pick. If they keep the pick they more then likely would draft a TE.

Bears sign Carolina CB to offer sheet

April 21, 2006

BY ASSOCIATED PRESS

The Chicago Bears signed restricted free-agent defensive back Ricky Manning Jr. to an offer sheet Friday, with his agent saying the deal is worth up to $21 million over five years.

The deal includes about $7.5 million in guaranteed money in the first year of the contract, agent Jim Ivler said.

Manning spent his first three seasons with the Carolina Panthers, who eliminated the Bears from the playoffs last season. The Panthers have until April 28 to match the offer or receive a third-round draft pick from the Bears.

"Ricky is obviously thrilled and he would be happy to be a Bear or a Panther," Ivler said.

Carolina general manager Marty Hurney wouldn't indicate whether the team plans to match it.

"We'll take some time and look and evaluate it," Hurney said. "We have a week to make a decision."

Carolina previously signed free agent Reggie Howard as a potential replacement for Manning at nickel back.

Manning has played the last three seasons with the Panthers, but lost his starting job before the 2005 season to free-agent pickup Ken Lucas. Manning has nine career interceptions in the regular season and four more in the 2003 playoffs.

"He's a physical player and has some ball skills," Bears coach Lovie Smith said.

Manning would give the Bears depth in the secondary where they lost Jerry Azumah, who retired.

"That's definitely one of the things we would like to get taken care of, any time any time you lose a player like Jerry," Smith said.

Behind starting cornerbacks Charles Tillman and Nate Vasher, the Bears have unproven Chris Thompson, Alfonso Marshall and Daven Holly.

The Bears had been considering taking a cornerback in the first round of the draft with the 26th pick.

"It obviously would change our direction if we did, in fact, do that," general manager Jerry Angelo said about successfully getting Manning onto the roster.

Angelo also said the team will continue contract talks next week with the agent for Pro Bowl linebacker Lance Briggs. The Bears want to lock Briggs up to a long-term deal and prevent him from becoming an unrestricted free agent in March of 2007

Wow. Manning was a guy I thought we should look at, just for depth, but not at anywhere near that kind of price. That's quite a lot for a 3rd corner. If we "overpaid" for a starting Safety in Arch, da Bears overpaid here.

But again, I will stick with my old arguement. If the Bears really felt they needed a nickel, and really felt Manning was their best alternative between FA and the draft, then they didn't really overpay, did they?

He's a RFA, they had to overpay if they really wanted to sign him. If they don't overpay all they accomplish is doing all the work for the Panthers contract negotiation team.

And if the Refs really are cracking down on chucking the receivers how is his size a liability now? It seems CBs that are too big and slow have the bigger problems than one that should be small and quick.

Because 2-3 years ago you could chuck a taller WR 10 or more yards down the field and had a good chance of getting away with it, like New England did with Indianapolis in the playoffs. But now after 5 yards the zebras are more likely to call pass interference, and a 5-8 CB is going to be at a bigger disadvantage covering a 6-1 or 6-2 WR. 2003 was the last year Ricky Manning played really well, which was in the playoffs.

Even if what you say is true -- and I doubt it with this 5-8 CB -- he's still only going to get on the field in nickel situations.

He is right. Ricky Manning is one hell of a CB despite his size. It's just hard to be the starter with Ken Lucas and my man Chris Gamble to compete with. They're both total ball hawks and very solid tacklers as well.

Im sure he's gonna write an article on how the Redskins should've gotten him for that kinda cheap money.

I doubt he'll have time. He'll be too busy writing about how Lavar was misused and the Giants now have the best LBs in the history of football even though he thought they were mediocre a couple of years ago.

I know Kenny Wright didnt get anywhere near that from us lol... More like 1/10th of that. #2 corners have trouble garnering that kind of money... a #3 CB is a different matter. Yes, we all know the numbers are misleading, contracts are backloaded, and there are a bunch of contingent bonuses, but if we overpayed for what we got, then they definately overpayed.
