NFL Draft Countdown Mock

Skins select Cedric Griffin at 53...

Strengths:

Has great size and a solid build...Very physical and aggressive...Good athlete with a burst...Plays faster than he runs in shorts...Strong and tough...Smart and very instinctive...Not afraid to support the run...Versatile and has experience at multiple positions...Very durable and productive...Has a ton of starting experience.

Weaknesses:

Has only average timed speed...Is too inconsistent...Ball skills and hands are lacking...Needs to refine his overall technique and is too high in his backpedal at times...Not very smooth in flipping his hips...Might not be a good fit in every defensive scheme...Has some character questions that must be answered.

Notes:

Could potentially move to safety at the next level...Could excel for a Cover 2 team...Underrated because there was so much talent on that Longhorn defense but this guy is a good pro prospect in his own right...Could end up being a steal.

On an intersting note his mock now has 1st round prospect LB Thomas Howard slipping past us. I really could not see us passing up on a talent like Howard.

There is no way Thomas Howard will fall that far. Its also interesting he has Mathias and Tapp going back to back right after our pick.

Man, if Howard falls past us, I will be pissed...this guy is an athletic freak at LB, somewhat smallish but all our LB's are. He seems like he has got all the entagibles Williams would like. If we selected Howard our LB corps would be lightning fast.

Amazing athlete with rare speed for the position...Has fluid hips and does a tremendous job when dropping into coverage...Has a great burst and closes fast...Terrific in space and makes plays sideline-to-sideline...Big hitter who will light people up...Changes direction well...Is an excellent pass rusher on the blitz...Very productive...Team leader and hard worker with top intangibles.

Weaknesses:

Gets by on his athleticism and lacks great instincts, which are essential for a linebacker...Can do a better job as a tackler...Struggles when taking on bigger blockers...Needs to hit the weights and get stronger...Doesn't react on the field as quickly as you'd like...Still developing and is not yet a finished product.

Notes:

Began his career with the Miners as a walk-on safety...Father was drafted by the Kansas City Chiefs in 1977 cousin was a member of the musical group En Vogue...A true workout warrior whose measurables are almost off the charts.

Is it just me or does the weaknesses listed for Howard above spark images of recently departed #56?

I was getting ready to jump to this conclusion, but then again when Lavar got drafted- who was our coach? With the right coaching staff, an undisciplinary prospect can rapidly evolve into an exceptional player!

Exactly, just because he has a similar skillset it certainly doesn't mean that he has Lavar's attitude.

Agreed but Lavar seemed to have a better 'tude in the beginning but i guess did always fancy himself the next LT, course his selection spot and the media sure helped in that regard.

Lavar came into this league with a big head, then the pro bowl seasons, the top LB talk, media hype, etc. it turned him into a monster.

Griffin is one of the most under-rated players in this draft. I was amazed to see what he ran at the combine (4.55) because he seemed to play much faster. I had an opportunity to watch him a couple times live down here in Austin and I would have sworn he would be a first round lock.

Very physical and he doesn't get beat often. He seems like he would be a prototypical Williams DB. I would love to get this guy.

I wouldn't go so far so call Lavar a "monster", but he was a little arrogant. Look at it in this perspective: If you were drafted #3 overall (i believe the highest a LB has ever gone) and made 2 or 3 pro bowls, you'd be a little ****y too. All in all I wish Lavar the best of luck, as long as he is out of the NFC east.

I'd take Griffin and be content but I would rather Kiwanuka over Thomas Howard. I believe we have a secret thing for Kiwi. We wanted him last year with the #9 pick but he returned to BC. Another year to better his skills, mature, and get another year of work in and now he is dropping from top of the first to the bottom of the 2nd. It might be key to trade up, maybe just a spot or 2 and still keep our #53 and take Kiwi and like 50-52 and griffin at 53

:applause:Agreed! Griffin, is who I want the Cowboys to take in the 2nd or 3rd.

Fellow Longhorn Michael Huff will be a top 10 pick..... I watched Griffin play quite a bit at UT, there's not that large of gap between him and Huff. Also, former teammate Nathan Vasher was selected in the 5th round of 2004 and Chicago couldn't have made a better choice. Ced got into a little trouble his Sr. year, this is one of the reasons he may still be there in the 3rd. I HOPE Y'ALL DONT PICK HIM!
