Arent you trying to get a license ? One challenge at a time bro.

A purebred goldy will probably run you from 450-650.

Although I have no idea where you should buy one from.

Yeah, I'm gonna get it tommorow for sure. I should have got it today but oh well.

That's a pretty good price I thought they;d be in the thousands.

I went to the Annapolis pound and got one of the best dogs I've had in my life for $45.00. She's a Golden Retriever mix (with Chow, I think). You'll pay at least $400 for a pure bred Golden retriever puppy. Trust me, there are some great mutts out there for the taking. When you select a pet from the pound, you do need to agree to have them spayed within a certain time period. So, if you're going to breed them, you'll need to pay top dollar.

BE VERY CAREFUL WHICH BREEDER YOU CHOOSE WHEN CONSIDERING A GOLDEN RETRIEVER. Because they are a very popular dog, they have been poorly bred and have a ton of genetic health problems which can be very, very expensive. The biggest one is hip displaysia, which requires hip replacement eventually. You need to go to a breeder who can document that the previous generations this dog came from did not have the health problems commonly associated with goldens Do a lot of research on those health problems, do not buy from a breeder who cannot document these things (many good breeders will actually give you guarantees against certain genetic health problems). Expect to spend a bare minimum of $600 but maybe as much as 1200. My Golden cost $800 10 years ago but she has been problem free as she came from a good breeder.

I cannot emphasize enough, DO RESEARCH AND MAKE SURE THE BREEDER IS ON THE UP AND UP, because if you get a golden from an irresponsible or back yard breeder, more likely than not, you will have health problems to deal with. It comes with the territory when the breed is so popular that they've been poorly bred, inbred and the like.

I am sure you can pay around 1500 or so. But I have a buddy that has 2 that he paid 550 and 650 for respectively.

And good luck with the liscense.

And to piggyback on DCsportsfan53, here is a link that has potential health issues you should be aware of : http://www.dogbiz.com/dogs-grp1/ret-golden/golden-retriever-health.html

There is another thing to be aware of. A lot of puppies around are obtained via a "puppy mill". If you don't know what this is I will explain. Basically what they do is get these dogs in pens that are stacked on each other, they never leave these pens after they are pregnant untill time for birth. These dogs sit in their own and others excrement and urine and on wire cages their feet are torn up.

Doing your research and not buying from places that treat dogs in this way is the only way to make it stop.

Just a warning:

Go to your local county animal shelter and pick out any number of friendly puppies.

There's far too many dogs in the world for people with the means to have a dog to encourage breeding more dogs. My wife and I went to our local shelter when we got a black lab/mix (don't know what with) puppy that for all intents and purposes, looks and acts exactly like a purebred black lab. He is literally the most well behaved, friendliest dog I've ever had.

I got him for 30 bucks. And who knows where he would've wound up if I'd bought a different dog (for far more money) from someone who breeds them.

If you have the means to have a dog, you might as well get one that needs you, imo.

:applause: :applause: We've done the same thing, and are on our second dog. I don't know anyone, personally, who hasn't had some type of rather serious problems with "pure-bred" dogs. Go to the local ASPCA and adopt one, you won't be sorry!

I too am all about the mutts and adopting from the pound or humane society...atleast give it a look before you buy from a breeder! :)

Astrodome. Good hot dogs there.

Astrodome? You can't grow a good hot dog indoors. Yankee Stadium. September. The hot dogs have been boiling since opening day in April. Now that's a hot dog.

The yellow mustard, or the darker kind?

The darker kind.

That's important.

Go to the local animal shelter and see if they have something close to what you want. Purebreds look nice but mutts tend to have better health and from what I've heard will likely be less aggressive and smarter animals.

Having said that I have a Beagle - wanted a mutt, I really did and I've had a few but adopting one in NoVA proved to be 100 times harder then I ever imagined. Every small dog that wasn't near the end of his life or violent and down right scarey instantly had 100 names on the wait list waiting to adopt it.

We got our Greyhound from GPA. They are a class organization and do their homework on you before they let you have a greyhound. Ours is everything they said he would be. they take a lot of patience when you get them though. You have to house train them (even though they are 3 years old on average) you have to train them to use stairs. Well worth it though. I wish people weren't so caught up on getting pure breed dogs and went to rescues or the aspca.

I bought mine from a Golden Retriever breeder in the Shenandoah Valley (Va). not sure how far a drive that is for you... but it's one of the top breeders in the region.

Any kind of Golden Retriever you want they can get. A working dog... a companion, curly hair, light golden, dark golden, or even a champion. And the prices are set accordingly.

When I bought (8 years ago now) they interviewed me to determine my needs and they chose a puppy for me. Not sure how they do it nowadays. But I got just a 'companion' dog, he was $500 at the time. I would imagine that they are probably getting over $1k by now. There was a waiting list developing even back then.

If you want a champion, etc... I'm sure you can pay as much as you want.

The name of it is Gap View Kennels. It is located in Broadway, VA. The guy I talked to at the time was named Chuck (can't remember last name)... but I don't think he's there anymore.

Like someone else said... be VERY careful buying a Golden. Be sure you buy from a certified breeder... Goldens are succeptible to many ailments i.e. Hip ailments, Heart ailments, etc.

Good luck, Goldens are GREAT dogs!

And while pounds/etc are great (my family has had several mutts over the years), don't feel bad about wanting a pure-bred dog.

There is absolutely nothing to feel bad about. Buying a pure bred, you'll know almost exactly what you are getting, there won't be any surprises, and if you buy from a respectable breeder the chance for hereditary diseases, etc. are greatly reduced.

Most of use rescues do that. BROOD keeps a hound for 2 weeks before placing them. We try to teach them manners, house training etc and we evaluate their personalities. Also to adopt one of our dogs you have to finn out an application, we do a house visit (come to your house and chat) and a vet check on you before you are approved or declined. We also have a statement in our contract that if you decide to get rid of any of our hounds they must come back to BROOD.

We also have trainers, nutrionist, behavior specialist, ex vet techs and others to help you with anything and everything.
