cjcdaman
Okay, I'm moving south, about 600 miles south, in June. I went to Uhaul's website and it is saying that the cost will be like $1500 for the truck and the vehicle tow. I'm not having any movers do the job. I'm simply renting the truck and using it to transport my things and my car down. Does anyone know of a cheaper way around this $1500 cost? I know it's going to cost some money but $1500 seems a bit much.
zoony
For a one way rental, that sounds about right. Where you can really save money is if you can get return the truck where you rented it. One Ways are VERY expensive. But if you do go that route (one way)... use Penske. A little bit more $ (not much though)... and their equipment is light years better. UHaul blows... you don't want to drive 600 miles in a POS Uhaul truck, believe me. ...
rictus58
Honestly, I wouldn't trust a U-haul truck to make it 60 miles let alone 600. furthermore, if you are counting on u-haul to have a truck available when you want it, you might be in for a surprise. Try Ryder.
JMac
Zoony is right. One way rentals are more expensive. If you can, try and return it. Also, you need to make sure the one you go with does not put govenors on the vehicles. I helped move someone a few months back and the darn thing would not go over 70mph. SkinsBry
I went with Penske several years back and it cost almost half as much as Uhaul.

Just so I understand this....You're essentially saying that it would be cheaper for him to drive the truck 1200 miles (additional 600 on the return trip) rather than just taking it to a UHaul that is local to where he's moving? fight_on_til_you_have_won
I'll echo everyone's sentiments here -- yes, that price isn't out of the ordinary and yes, U-Haul sucks big time. I also would like to offer pre-emptive sympathies for when you're doing all this without movers. Last time I moved was the last time I will ever go without them. Good luck. frommd
I moved one-way from Maryland to Miami in 1999. I got a Ryder truck and the price was about $450. There was an extra fee for the trailer, but I ended up not using it, because I had a 4x4 and they were supposed to give me a full trailer. They just gave me a front wheel trailer. My brother-in-law had to drive my car. So, yeah, I would shop around a bit. $1500 is way too much.
SkinsNut73
....there was a time last year where I thought I might be moving and we looked into PODS. If you are not familiar, that's where they drop off a container at your house...you load it up....and they come pick it up and move it to your new destination. They will even store the container for you if needed. Their website is here I don't remember the exact prices, but I remember them being reasonable. I was also looking to store my items for several months, so that's why I was going to go with them. I never ended up moving so I can't give a personal recommendation, but I have spoken to several folks who have used the PODS and each one speaks very highly of their experience. SkinsOrlando
I moved my wife and I down to Orlando from Cleveland in 03 one way for 900 beans going through budget, might want to check them out. I didn't rent a trailer though.
Grizz
Another option is ABF moving- http://www.upack.com They bring a trailer to your home, let you pack it and then they drive it to your destination. I used them about 7yrs ago to move from Denver to St. louis and it was only $800.

I nearly crapped my pants when I looked into how expensive it was to buy boxes/plastic bubble wrap/and other such packing items. I think it might have cost more than your U-Haul truck
cjcdaman
I went with Penske several years back and it cost almost half as much as Uhaul. Went online to Penske site and reserved a truck. Get this....$695!!!! That is $800 dollars less than Uhaul! But, I think the reservation does not include the price of insurance. I don't know what that will cost, but I'll be damed if I'm not going to purchase the insurance. And btw CJ... where you moving to? Wilmington, NC. I'll be like 10 minutes from the coast. I've always wanted out of this area. There is no economy and winter sucks! ....oh yea, and if you are moving in June...start collecting boxes now . I think it might have cost more than your U-Haul truck Believe me, I have. I've already cleaned out my basement of all the junk I am not taking with me. Trying to make the "big-packing day" as easy as I can. I've done a little bit of packing too.
DeanCollins
Wilmington, NC. I'll be like 10 minutes from the coast. I've always wanted out of this area. There is no economy and winter sucks! . Willmington is a good area to live. The cost of living (houses are cheap compared to national avr.) is lower. good luck there
Chris Lamb
I have never done any long distance moving but I can attest that U-Haul is weak. Go with another company if you can. Good Luck in Wilmington.
