Sorry if this has been talked before, but:

Does anyone have a list of succesful QB's in the NFL who sat on the bench the first two years after being drafted and then starting the 3rd year? I was just curious and couldn't think of anyone off the top of my head.

Off the top of my head,

Carson Palmer

Eli Manning

Dante Culpepper

I think McNabb?

You dont have anything to worry about, with Saunders and the talent around him he will be a good Quarterback.

Palmer, Culpepper, and McNabb sat for one year. Manning sat for about half a year.

Palmer only sat one year and Manning and McNabb were playing before the end of their first year. Culpepper I think sat for 2 years and Pennington was either two or three so there is precident but I'd like to see Campbell come September.

quaterbacks for the most part, do not do well when thrown into the fire.

Look at the leagues most sucessful qb's right now. None of them set the wold on fire by starting as rookies. Manning had 26TD's but 28 INT's in his first season.

QB's need to sit a year or two, absorb the playbook and get used to seeing the game at NFL speed.

Mark Rypien won a super bowl after he was on teh bench for over two years. Gibbs picked him in the 6th round and developed him into a great QB.

Pennington is the best example since he barely played at all his first two years with the Jets. He was also not supposed to be the starter in year three, but Testaverde stunk so bad they gave him a shot. Pennington gets a lot of flack now, but when he's healthy he's a really good QB.

McNair had 144 passing attempts in his second year. I don't know if he started those games or not, but my guess is he started a few. He didn't become a real good QB in the league until his 7th year.

Young is a poor example since he played in the USFL, then went to Tampa and played at both places before coming to San Francisco.

Culpepper only sat his first year.

Steve Young is probably the best example. He was on the bench for 3 or 4 years behind Joe Montana, wasn't he?

Young is sort of an unconventional example. He played 1984 in the USFL and then was drafted by Tampa Bay in 1985. He played a little in 1985, a lot in 1986 and then was traded to San Fran. He then sat for 4 years in San Fran before taking over in 1991.
