Redskins Diehard
Former Washington Redskins cornerback Darrell R. Green is being urged to run for the state Senate from Loudoun County next year by leading Northern Virginia Republicans who hope he can use his fame on the football field to oust newly elected Democrat Mark R. Herring. Green, one of the most well-known Redskins from the team's recent golden era, lives in Loudoun and has been running a nonprofit foundation since he left the team three years ago. ..... "He's a very popular football player and a star on the football field," Herring said. "I'm confident that my positions are consistent with those of the majority of the citizens in the district. I believe I'll be reelected next year." http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2006/04/14/AR2006041401571.html =========================================================== The Post is full of gems this morning!! I like the last line...this guy thinks he would beat Darrell, he should be impeached for even thinking such a thing!!!

Redskins Diehard
I think it would be interesting to see how an opponent would handle his candidacy. Clearly trying to smear such a cultural icon around here would be out of the question. I guess you would have to gently say that he has no idea what he is doing. Of course this is all assuming that the candidate would pursue normal tactics of making the other person look bad instead of making yourself look good. I think if it happened, his opponent would have to go after the fact that Green would be a "noob" in the political arena...keeping it clean of course. But so many people are fed up with politics these days, I could see him pulling it off...being the icon that he is and if he has some good ideas, it could be interesting. Just like Swann in PA. skinz1972
the only reason the GOP wants him to run is b/c so they can get blacks to vote against their own interest......there are 2 sides to a coin ppl.

And what would those interests be? Would a black man not know those interests? Or is this another time where someone will argue that Dems know "what's best" for minorities? Can they not figure it out for themselves?

Clearly it isn't because he is a conservative chirstian minority. Maybe his interests and the GOPs interests are the same. Your comment comes across as if Darrell Green and black people are not intelligent enough to realize they are being "set up".

Even better, Condi. I guess we could just turn this into a matter of race with an obligatory comment directed toward the current President which has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with Darrell Green running for office in Loudon County Virginia

I personally would love to see Colin run for pres, but he doesn't want to. I think that if he were president no country would try to screw with us, seeing how he has such a great military mind. I would like to see Condi run for pres, but she doesn't want to. I think that she is as tough as nails and would be one of the best presidents we have ever had. Larry
The ideal Republican candidate. Absolutely no experience whatsoever. No qualifications in management at all. No "history" in any way related to politics. (He can claim anything as his position, and nobody can say otherwise.) Excellant name recognition, and a lot of public goodwill. (Earned completely away from politics). In short, he's a really great candidate if what your party is looking for is a sock puppet who can be controlled by The Powers Behind The Throne. see: Swann, Schwartzneger. (No, I'm not expressing an opinion of Darrell. Never met him, and if I did, politics isn't what I'd talk about. I'm expressing an opinion of the GOP, backed up by my observations of what Governor Arnold has done since being elected.)

Kind of similar to how just about any Vet can get scooped up by the other side at even the slightest hint of interest! Interesting that you would say he has no qualifications in management at all. I believe he plays a fairly active role in managing his foundation. And I thought you would be in favor of someone that has not been corrupted by the politcal system. He isn't running for President, it is State Legislature.
Larry
And I thought you would be in favor of someone that has not been corrupted by the politcal system. He isn't running for President, it is State Legislature. If he's going to be his own man, then I'm all in favor of it. (I'm assuming he'll have the integrety to tell the voters what "his own man" stands for.) I'm hardly one to say that a lack of experience with back-room politics is a dis-qualification. OTOH, I keep remember Arnold running under the banner if "I'm a moderate, I'm not a politician, and I'm my own man". And I keep remembering what seem to me to be a lot of "scenes" that all seem to follow a pattern. A new issue comes up. One that hasn't "hit" during Arnold's administration, yet. Arnold goes public, and declares his intention to to <insert something here>. A hook enteres the frame from off-camera, pulls Arnold off-stage. A few hours later, Arnold re-emerges. Arnold announces that after studying the issue, he's decided to do exactly what the Republican Party wants done. When it's pointed out that that's not what he said he'd do, when he was running, he has a reason ready for why this situation is different from what he said when he was campaigning. (I's a pattern that seems similar to the "scene" whenever a Bush cabinet member said something that in any way differs from The Party Line.) And I do get your point, and it's valid. I remember a comic, back in '99, when rumors began that Powell was considering running for President. His statement was "Nobody could decide which would be more shocking: A black man at the Republican Convention, or a military man at the Democratic one." Seriously, He is popular, he is conservative, he kind of fits Colin is another RINO and he would NEVER get the nomination of the republican party, it is as simple as that. If he wants to be president, he has to leave the party, because the powers to be would make sure he doesn't come out of the fray.
