Some free agency results familiar

Free agency in the era of the new labor agreement has brought with it some staples of the past and interesting twists. The Washington Redskins spending fast and furiously? Same as it ever was.

Centers averaging $6 million on new contracts and guards $7 million? Well, that's new.

The New England Patriots losing players who were crucial to their success in the Super Bowl? Also a different look.

With the NFL draft more than two weeks away, the focus of most teams is on that avenue of talent procurement. Free agency tends to come in waves, and the initial tsunami, fed by a salary cap of $102 million a team (up $17 million from last year), is over.

The Redskins, moving with their customary speed, quickly signed receiver Antwaan Randle El, safety Adam Archuleta, defensive end Andre Carter, tight end Christian Fauria and quarterback Todd Collins. They've added or re-signed 12 players and lost only two, of which one (safety Ryan Clark) was a starter.

"We've chosen to be really aggressive there," coach Joe Gibbs says. "We feel like we've been really successful" in identifying and landing free agents since he returned to coaching in 2004.

The Minnesota Vikings, in the past two consecutive offseasons, have been labeled as a "free agency winner." Yet, in that time, they have lost two of the most explosive playmakers in the league in Daunte Culpepper and Randy Moss and replaced them with the 36 year old Brad Johnson, the speedy yet ineffective Troy Williamson, and the perennial backup Chester Taylor.

Is it possible that the media is full of ****?

Moss wasn't lost through free agency. He was traded.

Culpepper wasn't replaced by Brad johnson due to FA. He was replaced due to a very serious injury. His knee injury stands a very legitimate chance of ending his career as a top tier QB possibly as a decent QB. The Vikings haven't lost anything special in FA.

That being said, the basis of your argument is the oft-heard media hates the Redskins. Which I agree with.

We have made great stride shtis off-season, but it is not because of the players we signed, but instead the coaches coaching the players we signed.

Edit:

It is funny how Drew Brees is a loss for the Chargers, but not a gain for the Saints.

The media really does suck.

Pretty simple formula. Joe's happy. I'm happy.

I agree, Joe is the key to everything, we no longer sign big names just for the sake of signing big names, now a days we fill the needs of our team, a credit to Gibbs. Chances are good that after we have great success this year they will be doing all these stories on how Ole Joe is a master of building a TEAM with great character.

Ah, I really meant "off season" winner... Which I suppose changes things a bit.

But as of right now, seeing as how they have traded Daunte for just a 2nd rounder... They did this with the plan that Brad Johnson will be their starting quarterback for the 2006 season. So, in essence, they are replacing Culpepper with Brad Johnson.
