Lil Kenzo
I am writing a term paper for my sociology class and I am hoping that somebody will be able to help me out. The paper is about why people fear getting old. Does anybody have any specific reasons why they fear geting old? Any help is appreciated, thanks! Kurd Cudins
It depends what you mean by getting old. Do you mean the process of aging, or actually being a senior citizen?

Lil Kenzo
It depends what you mean by getting old. Do you mean the process of aging, or actually being a senior citizen? Not really the process of getting old, but more along the lines of thinking about old age. For instance, being like 26 and fearing old age. Kurd Cudins
One thing nobody else has mentioned is a fear of getting old and reflecting on a life that you are dissatisified with. It is intertwined with death but is better phrased as "running out of time" for some.

The 12th Commandment
Thanks man. Does anybody think that money plays an issue into the fear of getting old??? It did for me. I took a job with local govt. instead of the private sector because that's the only place you can get a pension anymore. I coulda made more in the present but I don't trust 401k's or the stock market, at least as the only thing to rely on. I do own some stock, it's just as an aside though. I'll have insurance and a guaranteed income till the day I die. And I get to retire at 55 which is still pretty young....as I'm starting to think more and more! I don't want to be old and poor. I've seen folks in that sitch and it ain't pretty.

Jumbo
too bad it has to be on the negative side of getting old, since that's what our culture focuses on too much anyway, IMO... but, if thats the way it is you could just cover all kinds of loss kenzo...death of friends, relatives, and acquaintances becomes more regular events...loss of job work/identity and status...of physcial abilities...of hobbies/interests that can't be pursued any longer... of social acceptance (you could do a big part just on how our culture marginalizes and isolates the elderly) and of mental capabilities...jeeez...thats too depressing lol... you should spend some time looking into all the good things that can be a part of aging (that we don't focus on very often) just so you feel better

drums and skins
It depends what you mean by getting old. Do you mean the process of aging, or actually being a senior citizen? Troof. Because, personally, it'd be nice if I could just stay in my high school days where I could be pretty carefree. It was a nice security blanket... Now I gotta earn money and provide and stuff. High school laziness is where it was at... Seriously though, I'd be lying if I didn't have a drop of fear in me... a fear of getting older from feeling the pressure to "succeed"

Mark Moseley
I didn't read all the responses So I'm sorry if I'm repeating what has been said. The Media has alot to do with our perception on getting old.Our society is based on youth. The Media portrays the ideal image as young, thin & good looking.Look at other cultures, The Japanese honor their Elderly where we(western Culture) tend push them aside. The Media has been bombarding this youthful image into america for decades. The only time you see an older person in ads is that if their pushing DEPENDS, Insurance, Denture cream or Viagra.Noone looks forward to having to use those products. Hope that was helpful
RLeVan
A term paper like this should really provoke questions of what we want to achieve in life. It's almost a mirror image of where you are now, and reflecting back on what you have become. Every action we take has some effect on our surroundings. In the present, it's sometimes difficult to discern whether that action is beneficial or detrimental to our surroundings. Only after years have passed do we truly realize the effects of our actions. In the long run, there are two ways a life is appreciated. If you have made a positive impact on those around you, your friends will miss you when you're gone. If you have slagged along, people will throw a party when you leave. What we dream to accomplish and what we actually accomplish tend to be totally seperate things. What we have is what we contribute to make the world/society a little better. It doesn't have to be profound. There are so many directions you can take this paper that it should be fairly easy.
