Will todays music stand the test of time??

I went to a Billy Joel concert in Philly last week and it was simply amazing. The guy can still sing like he did in the late 70's and 80's. After the concert I started to think on how we have so many bands and musicians that have lasted for 30+ years and the music today is still great like; Billy Joel, Elton John, Rolling Stones, Beattles, Zepplin, Guns N Roses, Bon Jovi, Michael Jackson (yes he is crazy but the man was talented), Stevie Wonder, etc...

I can go on and on, but it seems the musicians in the past were so much more talented to now, they wrote their own music the loved what they did, it was a passion. Looking at the music of the late 90's and now 00's who do you think could last say 20 years, heck what music today could last even 10 years down the road????

It is clear music today is just not as good.

Heck, a lot of today's generation, they didn't even know their WAS music before rap.

God help some of these kids if 95.5 ever goes off the air.

it does annoy me when someone remakes a song and acts like they created it.

i do wonder if 30 years from now will i be blasting mc hammer, kriskross, or brand nubian in my luxury spaceship.

Somehow I doubt it. :) The greats of the genre will probably stand the test of time, as have the greats of all genres and eras. Tupac, Biggie, Eminem, Dre, Snoop. Most people are already waiting for the next new sound.

The biggest problem with today's music, for the most part across the board is the lack of originality. The Industry doesn't want originality. It wants what has been proven to sell. If somebody does slip through with something even remotely different, or original. They clone it sixty thousand times until it's been beaten to death.

I think there is music out there today that is just as good, it's just the cream does not rise to the top. You have to go out and find it.

I agree that many POP bands will not last. That is because their music is shallow.

I think some of the music will survive. I am not sure WHERE contemporary music will go next. It'll be interesting how people try to keep things fresh. Adding instrumentation? Taking live performance to a whole different level? I have no idea how that can be done without taking this thread OT, but I kinda like where we are now. Many choices for people who enjoy music is a good thing to me.

And "they wrote their own music" is a joke. Before the Beatles and including most of the soul out of Stax studios and Motown, most songs were written by songwriter duos such as Lieber and Stoller out of the Brill building in NYC.

I don't know about if what we have now will "stand the test of time", but I do think that the only music that has the most to grow is country.

Believe it or not, country music is pretty much the only genre that has evolved the LEAST. Now day's its not much more than R'n"R with a Twang. As my professor said "it won't be long before you see... 'grunge country'"

The pool of all-time greats was poisoned by the introduction of talentless pop divas and boy bands along the lines of N'Sync, Britney Spears, anyone who has appeared on American Idol, etc.

I kind of agree that it is a lot harder to identify timeless classics in the last decade of music... the only bands that I can really see as surviving as all-time favorites that are still building on their reputations at this point started up in the laste 80s and early 90s. Music is a bit more diversified now, though... so it might be considerably harder for any one band to truly go down in history like Led Zeppelin, ACDC, and others have.

The Offspring, Green Day, Nirvana, GnR, Rage Against the Machine, and Audioslave... those are the only non-rap ones that I think even stand a chance that I can think of right now.

Rap isn't music... ;)

Some music will, some won't. Tool will, Godsmack won't, when it comes to Rock. Most of the Pop won't stand up, in terms of musical content, but it'll be rememberd in the same way New Kids on The Block is remembered. It'll be remembered for happening, but not for really anything else.

There really isn't anything out there that'll stand up and be looked upon as groundbreaking in the sense that Zeppelin, The Beatles, '70's Elton John (especially Goodbye, Yellow Brick Road), etcetera, is. It's all about the hit, the commercial aspect and marketing. The same melodies are used over and over and over and over... and Rock is even worse. Take a band, dress them in the '80's style tees one size too small with stupid sayings, comb their hair over one eye and give them a record contract. They'll be forgotten in five minutes, though.

Some Country Music will stand the test, but not popular/rock music.

There hasnt been an "album" in a decade that I've heard and said "whoah".

There have been some great songs, radio hits, alternative anthems etc. So there will be a few "Melt with You" moments. But I dont think there is an artist today that will be revered by future generations like some artists are today that were around in past generations.

Very true. Very little of what you hear on the radio these days will stand the test of time. But a lot of stuff thats not as mainstream will not only stand the test of time but in the end probably be more relevant than someone like Billy Joel (and I'm not knocking him, just saying).

Even most of the stuff you hear on the radio that probably will stand the test of time began as indie or where indie in nature (White Stripes, Coldplay, Radiohead) so I definetly don't feel as if today's music is lacking. But the radio isn't playing the good stuff.

In a word, "no". The only somewhat impressive new band out there is The White Stripes, but they will probably not become a "classic" band. Nearly everything else is nothing short of pure garbage.

Not sure that I would call the White Stripes "new". They are about to start recording thier sixth album. But I would agree that they are an impressive band.

Tool is the only current rock band IMO, that will stand the test because they have a huge loyal following and they don't cater to trends. Not everyone loves tool, but that's a good thing IMO.

Not everyone loved Led Zeppelin back in the day. :2cents:

Most music from today, especially the pop punk BS and the horrible southern rap, will die a quick death once the new fad catches on. I do feel there are numerous bands making music today (and by today I'll focus on now...obviously guys like Tupac and Biggie will be revered for a long time) that will stand the test of time. Off the top of my head:

Radiohead

DMB

Wilco

U2

Counting Crows

John Mayer (laugh if you will, but he will be a Paul Simon like figure in 20 years)

Phish (if the rumors are true)

Widespread Panic

Iron and Wine (a personnal favorite of mine...not sure if many people on this board listen to him)
