Not to be negative about a "great" off-season but....

I agree with what you said, but our offseason was still one of the best and we can't hope to fill all our needs in one offseason. We will add depth eventually and we can certainly find players to fill the voids we have.

The only reason why you don't have confidence is that you haven't seen the guy play. Certainly, that's fair. But, you would have to think that the coaching staff has seen what these players can do, and that they may have confidence in them to do the job.

BTW, those aren't the only option at OLB for us. The staff has mentioned that Khary Campbell will have an opportunity to compete on the outside, and we picked up Jashon Sykes, who has actually started at OLB for Denver. So, it isn't like we are lacking in options. Then there is the upcomming draft, where more options could appear.

I certainly think it is a possibility, but I only see that happening if they think Marshall is the only option out there. The responsibilities of the MLB is Williams' system seem to be much higher than at other positions, and you may not just plug someone else in there and have things be seamless.

I don't have confidence in either McCune or Clemons to be the starter on the outside or in the middle. McCune barely made the team last year, and Clemons has demonstrated utility as a pass rushing specialist, but I would have thought that he'd have won the job last season with LaVar being injured and Holdman struggling at times. He's injury-prone and still raw.

You'll find no bigger Khary Campbell fan than me, but he's not the best option either. I don't know much about Sykes, but many here seem to think quite a bit of him.

All these names might seem like good players if for no other reason than because we've heard of them. Remember last season? Everybody loved Clifton Smith or Brian Allen? Neither of them made it, nor did Jared Newberry. Competition is great, but that doesn't mean I'll be confident in the winner if he comes from someone already on the roster.

If you think about it we would be fine if we did not sign anybody else on Defense. With all the versatility our D now has (Arch and Carter) we could have packages that has carter playing LB or we can walk Arch up in the box as a run stopper. I think Preliou can step in at a nickle package type deal. I think the last thing this Defense is going to be is conventional and that means we don't need all the conventional type positions.

Actually, I'd have plenty of confidence in that if the guy comes off of our roster, because of past history. Two guys we promoted from within on our LB corps were a success. It could happen again.

Really, I'm not backing any of these guys, because as you said, you don't know. At the same time, the fact that I can roll off four names from our roster who could be canidates for the job, is actually pretty good.

depth on the o-line is a question, but we have signed several solid backups already in Jonathan Goodwin, and some other guys whose names escape me. remember that we are signing BACKUPS not starters here so if you don't know the names or they are not probowlers its not that big of a deal. can you name 2 backup o-linemen on any other team? ex. the seahawks who rushed for over 2000 yards and 28 TD's combined?

secondly I'll agree that the linebacking core is not very deep and we'll probably have to get one or more in the draft. but two years ago marshall and pierce where special teams players who no one knew about and no one had faith in. now pierce is a great player for NY and i think marshall lead the team in tackles last year. Greg Williams has a system that turns average players into very good players. is clemons the answer at WSL? im not sure at this moment but he is not going to hurt the defense, besides its not like we had all-stars last year in holdman and an injured free-lancer arrington.

lastly the CB position should be the first thing that we address in the draft. williams likes to leave corners on an island a lot of the times so we do need a young solid back-up to be here when springs leaves/retires. jimoh is an ok option at #3 but better suited as a dime conerback. in the second round there are always good corners available and we'll get a chance to get one. besides with the redskins giving away draft picks like they're going out of style dont be surprised if they package some sort of deal that will move them up in the draft to get what they want. are we really all that unhappy at losing walt " i like to get burned" harris? have some faith in gibbs and willaims people

Actually, we lost Goodwin to the Saints a few days ago. We did sign some dude from the Browns and another guy that escapes me now...not tremndous depth, but at least something.

It seems on defense when we always thlink we need something, with Williams scheme we don't. Two years ago, "Oh, we need defensive ends." Didn't sign one other then Daniels and still had the number three defense in the league.

Lose Pierce, "Oh no, what about middle linebacker." Move Marshall and he plays decently for us. Well, this year it's the lost of Arrington. To be honest, Arrington has not been the active dominant player for us the last two years. His best game in the last two years was the San Fran game, but only because he was incredibly hyped after being benched.

I would say between Jashon Sykes, Cleamons, Campbell and a draft pick, we will find our new weak side linebacker.

We still have some key holes that still have to be addressed. First of all, there is no WLB at all. Arrington is gone we need to accept that, but we definitly must bring somebody in here to fill that void. We cannot afford to bank on a 2nd round pick to fill that gap and i dont want to even hear about Mcune or Campbell as anything more than special teams players. I fail to see why we were so aggresive in going after the "big name" free agents but have completely made little or no (known) effort to sign a starter

Secondly, the secondary and linebackers have no depth. After Spring and Rodgers who is there? Jimoh? Not bad, but as a 4th CB/special teams player. I dont think anybody wants a big name. But we cannot leave that position to chance (draft) in "our year".

Finally, and perhaps most importantly, the offensive line has ZERO depth. This is something I think we look to in the draft so I am not too concerned at this point.

I do thing that if we can plug up these holes, this can be "our year"

Rest well my friend. Gibbs has something up his sleeve. You don't have to have a big name at LB to be great. Some of the best are often quiet. Gibbs' LB have always been good. He'll get the right person. Just believe.
