A chick for the job?

Why am I seeing reports that Condi Rice is being considered to be the next commish of the NFL. Bob Kraft even has kind words on her behalf. Can anyone explain why she would be a good replacement for Tags? I can't for the life of me understand why her name is even mentioned.

I could go into a long rant about why Condolezza Rice as NFL comissioner would be the worst idea ever, but that would get the thread kicked into tailgate (Hint: it has nothing to do with her gender).

The reason she is mentioned is because she has indicated in the past that she would like the job. A part of me likes to think that the reason Tagliabue retired when he did is so that disaster would not befall his league.

I read that story and laughed out loud, much to the dismay of my roommate, who was trying to sleep.

I don't even know who decided it was a story at all, but it supports my idea to required people to obtain licenses before being allowed to report the news.

What? So, if it's not her gender, then it's either her race or political ideology. Not sure how either would make her a "disaster" as NFL commish.

:whoknows:

Please feel free to clarify this ridiculous presumption. Or is it because she's a Cleveland Browns fan? Now that I understand.

Or it could be because she has no football background? Why is it essential for people to insist every opinion in this world is based on bigotry?

So? Neither did Tags. Tagliabue was a lawyer before he became NFL commish. Same with NBA Commish David Stern. Rice didn't have any background as Secretary of State either. I was just curious as to why he thought Rice would be a "disaster." And from his post, his reasons are either political or racial (and I'm sure it's not based on race) as he made it a point to say it wasn't based on gender.

So now that we've cleared the air, what is it about Condi Rice that would make her a terrible NFL commish? Simple question.

He probably figured that no one would assume it was racial to begin with. But he assumed wrong, as everyone likes to make alot out of nothing when it comes to that kind of stuff.

Just because Tags didn't have experience does NOT mean that we have to put someone else without experience in that position. Tags did an outstanding job as commissioner and I'm more than certain any one of his disciples would fill the role better than Condolezza Rice, who is the current Secretary of State. Why? Not because of any racial, gender, political bull****, but because they have seen how every day operations run, and they've seen Tags success... Condi Rice hasn't.

It's not so much Rice, it's the fact there are much more qualified individuals for a job.

If you had a business, let's say building decks, who would you rather hire?

Joe A whose previous experience was as a lumber manager at Lowe's for twelve years, and had built and designed several decks

or

Joe B who worked in a McDonalds and had no experience with decks.

The answer should be clear as to why she shouldn't be Commish. Is that to say the McDonald's guy couldn't do a great job? No. But at initial hiring, that's life. Happens every day in practically every business environment around you. The qualified get the job, this case should be no different.

First off, I didn't presume his comment was racial. I only said that to insinuate that his post would only make people narrow it down to either her A) race, or B) politics. I was simply hinting at clarification.

By your own logic, the NFL would have to raise Pete Rozelle (RIP) from the dead because he has previous experience.

And your analogy does not apply here. If you replaced, let's say, "worked as McDonalds" with "U.S. Secretary of State" then maybe it'd be more accurate.

Sorry, but anybody who has the qualifications to be U.S. Secretary of State is certainly qualified to become NFL Commissioner.

All I'm asking for is a legitimate reason as why Condi would be unqualified.

That is absolutely ridiculous. Would you want Barbara Streisand running the NFL?

Of course you wouldn't. And neither would I. And that has nothing to do with her political ideology.

Art Modell described himself as a "fat cat Republican", and if he wanted in as NFL commish, I'd be just fine with that. The folks in Cleveland wouldn't be to happy...

The reason I think Condolezza Rice would be a disaster is because I find her to be incompetent. Being right-wing is one thing, being right-wing and a stooge (or left-wing and a stooge) is another. Alan Greenspan is someone I disagree with ideologically but do not find to be incompetent. John McCain is another. Former Secretary of Defense William Cohen is another. If any of these people wanted to be NFL Comissioner, I would say, "Gee, I don't know what they have to do with football, but at least they demonstrated that they could do their last jobs."

I'm not going to get into a discussion about Rice's incompetence, because that is Tailgate talk, and I'm not up for political debate right now.

There we go. I was just curious. Thanks for the clarification.

Hokie4......Just tell me why Rice had qualifications to get her current job and you might have an argument.

I'd imagine her multiple doctorates would suffice. Just google her Bio.

Just to clarify:

Paul Tagliabue did have prior experience with the league before becoming commissioner. He was a lawyer for the league in Washington, and worked closely with Pete Rozelle on various labor issues.

Bingo.

And the analogy DOES hold weight. Even IF I had put Secretary of State in instead of McDonald's, does that make her more qualified to build decks? Absolutely not.

It's the same thing for being NFL Commissioner. She has NO previous experience with the NFL. At all.

Furthermore, I'm not saying you need to have experience as NFL Commissioner, as you seem to be implying that I am. I never once said that, putting words in my posts is not appreciated. I am saying you should have experience in the NFL, preferably experience in close proximity of the NFL Commissioner. I can think of alot of different people that should have the job over Condi Rice.

And what do her doctorates have to do with running the NFL? There's more to it than just business.

There are thousands of people who would be qualified for this position. That's my whole point. You all are acting like Tags' successor needs to pull some sword from a stone. Even Bill Clinton's name has been thrown into the mix. Any of these people could run this league and have success. If you want to believe a former U.S. Secretary of State, a U.S. President, or a JD/Ph.D would run the league into the ground, then feel free. I just disagree.

And my point is the person they should hire should have NFL Experience. Or hell, at LEAST experience in the professional athletic world.

Bill Clinton AND Condi Rice have no place as the commish of the NFL.

 I can't believe it took this long for someone to bring this up. - Tags worked for the NFL I think for like 15 years under Rozelle. - This is why I'd like to see it go to someone under Tags - ALREADY working for the NFL.

I think Condoleezza would work out good as the Commish; after all, it ain't like she will be discussing X's and O's with the good ole boys. There is nothing out there that says she doesn't know anything about football.

So she is a woman; we cant keep thinking this way in America. We have enemies over seas living that way for us.

From what I heard, Paul didnt know crap his first 4 years in the league as commish and was molded into place because he didnt know a thing about football, but he was a pretty good basketball player as well as a lawyer.

This is a business not a popularity contest.

I vote for the current Gov. of PA, Ed Rendell, to be the next commish. I'm sure that he would have all teams wear Eagle green and black, but I think he would be OUTSTANDING as a commish. He has political clout, he has a total passion for the game (does a Philly post-game show, even as Gov.), and would LOVE to have the job (just my opinion).
