I REALLY, REALLY wish Lenny P and the others would read this...

I'm going to keep this as short and sweet as possible, and try to stick to the facts.

Lenny P and many others continue their overt and unprofessional bashing of the skins. Honestly, it doesn't upset that much because he IS a columnist and opinions are acceptable. What I don't like is the blatant disregard of the facts and that the Redskins are NEVER given the benefit of the doubt.

Several Points Ole' Lenny should read:

--It's not YOUR money so stop worrying about it. Exactly what does "overpaid" mean? The only way "overpaying" hurts a franchise is if it limits what they can do down the road. We've been warned about "cap hell" for seven years, and we continue to get the same warning with seemingly no ill effects. As far as I'm concerned there is NO salary cap. If Lenny and the others would simply admit they DO NOT fully understand the details of the cap, then things would be much easier.

We need a punter. If Snyder knew we get Shane Lechler for a $15 million signing bonus and not destroy the cap, then I really would be all for it--- who cares if you "overpay" as long as you get the right pieces?

Which brings me to the next point:

--NONE of the free agents we signed are all that great. I agree that ONLY looking at the monetary figures you'd have to say we overpaid. HOWEVER, each of those players fills an OBVIOUS need and fits in with the overall scheme of the team. Archuleta is being paid as a top-tier safety. Do I believe he's an elite player? No way. But he does play the "in the box" safety role quite well and fits perfectly as a blitzer within Gregg Williams' system. Randle El is NOT anywhere NEAR a #1 WR, but in Washington, he will be used to add a spark both offensively and on special teams. Andre Carter has been a bit dissapointing in his career, but again, he fills the role of young speed rusher the skins have been after for years.

--NO ONE mentions the fact that almost ALL of our free agents are VERY young, which sort of diffuses the "not worried about the future" theory.

--Out of 22 starting players, the Redskins will probably return approx. 17-18 from last year. I'm not exactly sure how you can consider that "blowing up the roster."

--Why is everyone so infatuated with the NUMBER of draft picks you have? The FACT is that the majority of late-middle round picks don't pan out. If you can trade a 4th rounder for a young, proven 24 year-old, then why is that bad business?

What matters more is the QUALITY of picks that a team makes. Lenny and the crew NEVER mention that Sean Taylor, Carlos Rogers, Jon Jansen, Chris Samuels, Derrick Dockery, Chris Cooley, etc... are all homegrown players. The Redskins have also done a solid job of landing "team" guys like Rock Cartwright and Kharry Campbell.

--While everyone focuses on the "big name" free agents, they refuse to give credit to the Redskins "lesser" names. Shawn Springs has been BRILLIANT in Washington, as has Marcus Washington. They are both leaders on and off the field and have only HELPED team chemistry. Add Randy Thomas and Santana Moss to the mix.

--Snyder has ALWAYS had the right idea-- he just wasn't able to get the right man to steer the ship. Snyder is NOT a Steinbrenner type owner in that he FULLY listens to Gibbs and the coaching staff and just gives them the means to get what they need/want.

The Redskins have stability now, and Snyder has paid to get that stability by keeping Williams. We have a plan. And oh, by the way, they went from 6-10 to 10-6 led by a bunch of evil "overpaid" free agents.

I am sure Lenny gets a paycheck from ESPN. And let me assure you-- whatever they're paying, it's WAY too much.

GREAT post!! I have been thinking the EXACT same thing. You really should email this to him- you probably won't hear back but we have to listen to his *(&&* so why shouldn't he get some in return? I take that back he would be hearing the quality type of ideas that he should be reporting!

Let's not hijack kleese's thread, m'kay?

To your points kleese, I agree completely--

The acquisition of players through free agency makes sense from a business perspective; with the draft you are far more susceptible to risk than you are with a trade. With any draft choice, you have all the risks that accompany a trade in addition to the (enormous) unknown of no performance record in the NFL.

No one will discount the fact that this could go either way and there can be diamonds in the rough that will always be found in the later rounds. Tom Brady is an excellent example--but consider just how many failures there are in the 5th round for every Tom Brady. I'd venture that the majority, if not the super-majority, are busts.

As a rational businessman (and football executive), wouldn't you rather manage your risk as efficiently as possibletake players that are proven at your competition level?

Acquisition through trade is clearly the more risk averse (and arguably better) decision than doing the same through the draft.

The day that I read a mea culpa piece from Len or from any of the others with their one-track dogmatic mantra...it's never going to happen. The cap's complexities are understood very well by our team. And we should be proud of that. That Len descends to insinuate that there are some kind of hijinks going on is not only an indictment of his inability to understand the cap but indicative of how far he'll reach to beat his bitter drum.

The sooner we no longer give creedence to the talking heads, the more quickly they will evolve. Market power is our friend here. :)

That post needs to be sent to ESPN. I have been asking people to send an e-mail to ESPN expressing their anger over Pasquerelli's articles. Every time one of his garbage, yellow-journalism pieces comes out, I will write to ESPN and will urge others to do the same. That is a promise. i would also like to recommend that if the calls for an apology and/or further action go unheeded, we impose a ban of ESPN. I recommend people who are going to e-mail ESPN threaten a ban. Our membership numbers are close to, or over 55,000. That's something you can't ignore. If a third of the people here write in, that's almost 20,000 people right there. This irresponsible "journalism" needs to stop, and the only way for that to happen is to make our voices heard.

Yo Kleese....................................

..........................Send that into ESPN, SI, CBSSPORTSLINE, FOX SPORTS, NFL.COM, KFFL.COM, And to all the Owners of each NFL Team.

Couldn't have said it beter myself! You should put that in Dr.Z, Lenny, and Peter King's Mailbag and give them a dose of their own medicine!

I love the hate. Please, let's let the media and other teams think that we are wasting our money and will be in cap hell. It would be GREAT if certain other teams remained tightfisted due to their lack of understanding of the cap while we go out and get who we want. Keep the hate comin'.

I think your points have validity but what I'll never understand is how it's not good enough for you to make moves......the media and other fans must love the moves and realize the brilliance of them.

Come on, it's just the nature of sports. People are going to look at any action through their whatever colored glasses and then state their opinion.

As always Kleese, your post is dead on

What these writers also need to look back at is history. This is exactly how Bethard and Gibbs built the teams of the 1980s, through FA to fill holes, and the draft to build long term depth

Amazing how they ignore simple facts

hey, that never really happened.

dan snyder paid millions to implant those memories in our brains, don't you know that?

BS, Westy.

It's not that we demand that all moves be loved by media or other fans. But at some point ONE of them should earn actual praise OR not even praise, just objective reporting.

WHen I see columns and articles about other teams, I often see an array of mixed opinions on a given player or move. I see proponents and detractors. I see balanced opinions at times, about moves that say, Atlanta made. And if I see a negative one, it's usually because that's just the genuine opinion of that move.

When it comes to the Skins, every move is terrible. Every prophecy is doom and no matter how many times the truth proves them wrong they come out with more doomsday prognostications and more BS opinion-FORMING.

TO be sure, Peter King has actually said some positive things about the Skins and previous acquisitions but others have not been so 'balanced.' It's HOW it's done, Westy, not WHAT is said.

It would be nice if the critics were right or at least PROPERLY diagnosed what they got right before. Just ONCE in awhile would be cool.

But more of the same "How did they do that? They're crazy. Of course we didn't read teh contract, but look it says 5000000 billion dollars over 5 years!! They're always losing (except last year when they were an injured QB from the NFC Title game)!! They always overpay for aging players(oops!) overrated players, unproven players (Moss)..wait, Moss?! Well, what about Dana Stubblefield!!!!!!!!!!???"

Exactly. People with MINIMUM knowledge of the NFL still just assume Snyder is going out and signing all the Deion Sanders/Bruce Smiths/Trung Candidates of the world, overpaying over the hill vets, and firing his entire coaching staff yearly. The reason people still think this way is the incredibly negative bias these idiots have towards the Skins.

Judging a player, who has just signed a new contract, on his past numbers is unfair. Obviously they need to write about something and the Skins are making headlines.

Santana Moss had 45 catches and something like 600-700 yards for the Jets. We gave him a good sized contract because we knew that his numbers would translate into better production if we threw him the ball as many times as Coles. Has anyone noticed that Moss has almost exactly doubled his #'s from the Jets?

If you look at many of the good wide receivers in the game, ALL of them have one consistent factor and that is yards per catch. Santana was just the man with a staggering 18 yards per catch. Normally #1 receivers are between 13-16 yards/catch.

Brandon Lloyd and Antwaan were in the top 15 in this category. They were at 15.3 y/catch and 15.9 y/catch respectively.

They beat out such names as Torry Holt, Deion Branch, Anquan Boldin, Larry Fitzgerald, Marvin Harrison, Hines Ward, Jimmy Smith, Chad Johnson, STEVE SMITH, Reggie Wayne. But they had limited chances because they were number 2 options or they were on san fran...

Westy-- I'm not after "love" from anyone--- again, I actually admit that Adam Archuleta is an overrated player-- if you were starting a team from scratch and paid him that money, you'd be an idiot. But he fills a role here that will help the team, and why should I care how many millions Snyder is throwing his way?

Reports of Redskins signings are always laced with comments like, "once again Dan Snyder attemps to buy a championship." What does that man? Are the Eagles trying to buy a championship with Darren Howard? How about the Titans with Givens and Mawae?

Is there a certain number of FA's you need to sign in order to be consider "trying to buy a championship?"

These are all questions the media and general fanbase fail to answer.
