Mile Run

Today in weight training we had to do the mile run. Being a 6'3" 246 lb guy, I don't like running. But today, I almost got my bets time ever. I got 11:56. Five years ago, I ran an 11:45. but I am proud because I am up from 12:20, which I ran in october or November and hadn't run since. I probably could have atleast ran an 11:45 today, but I wasn't trying my hardest and my legs were killing me. Hopefully I can keep improving.

I'm 6'0" 225-ish and can still run about a 6:30 mile. Usually around 14:00 for 2 miles. You got some work to do. Running is all about rhythm and pace. I know an organization that will be happy to help you with your run times if you want. ;)

I don't run much any more since I ran track in high school. My time when out of shape is about 6:30. When I want to get back in shape and get my time down, I start out running a mile everyday for a little. I try to beat the time slightly from the previous day. When I feel more in shape, I add a mile to my daily run. That might be a good way to get your time down if you really wanted to.

Man....dont listen to these kats "dawging" your time.....you already said its not something you like to do, so obviously its not something you have a lot a off practice with.....My opinion you should keep practicing the mile, maybe run the 1/2 mile hard, walk a 1/4, then run the last 1/4 hard to help improve your stamina...plus alternative excercises like rowing (that was suggested earlier), basketball and my favorite the elliptical machine (minimal stress on the joints, strengthens the legs and burns mad calories). :2cents:

you are a teenager and run that slow?

I am more than twice your age and just ran 5.2 miles in 51 minutes on sunday during the St. Patties 10K. You have to do better than that son!

Best I ever got was 7 1/2 mile minute over 8 miles in my early 30s. When I was in my teens, the best mile I ever did was in the 9-10 minute range. My problem is I've never been able to find a 'cruising' range that some people seem to find.

I ran a 4:20 in High School - I have no idea what I could do now as I'm in the worst shape of my life - but I think I'd be lucky to break 6 minutes. The mile is tough at that size though. I always preferred 6-10 mile races.

I had one of the best HS cross-country/track coaches in the country (he went on to win the NCAA championship with George Mason University a couple years later. We were putting in 80-100 miles per week just in practice. That was a long long time ago :)

80 miles/ week? is that healthy?

it worked, though. 4:20 is flying.

flying high.

3 of our top 5 guys had stress fractures over a 2 year period, so personally, in retrospect, it was excessive :) We did do a lot of our training on trails, golf courses, etc...we'd run 3-4 miles before school, then another 8-10 at practice in the afternoons. Only bad thing about it was, I found the better I got the less I enjoyed it - it went from being an underdog in every race to having the pressure of having to perform well every time. I'd get so nervous before I race, I'd almost get sick. I was the 2nd or 3rd best distance guy on our teams my junior/senior years, so I'm not bragging by any means ('we'll just sit around talking about those boring stories of...glory days....'). One of our guys could easily run sub 9:00 for 2 miles and ran sub 4:10 routinely.

I've kind of promised myself this year I'm going to get back into it and see what kind of shape I can get into.

sounds like a case of burn out. happened to me w/ soccer.

good luck with that. for me, i only do it if i write it out on paper. a self-contract. i lost 45 lbs. right after my son was born. he's now almost 2, and 1/2 the weight is back on. so i've made a new self-contract starting this week. my goal is 18 lbs. in 6 weeks.

Just keep working at it, your size isn't the problem, just conditioning

I used to run with two fellas about your size that easily put in 6.00 min miles.

Pissed me off to no end...my average was about 6.12 and I rarely broke the 6 mark at 185 lbs. :(

Honestly, if you want to bring your time down, theres only one way to do it. Run a couple times per week (minimum) and focus on 2-3 miles. If you can push yourself at a reasonable pace for 2-3 miles, your ability to really press for 1 mile will greatly increase.

And I'll tell you a secret about running. The first 30 days is brutal. If you're out of shape, you'll inevitably start hard, overdo it, and be in pain until you finally work all that lactic acid out of your legs. It takes a good month before running feels 'easy' and you can actually enjoy it. The best thing about running is that, once you're in good shape, you really do almost drift off while you're doing it. I've gone on lengthy runs, and get so lost in my own thoughts, I'm home before I even realize it. But theres definitely a wave of discomfort you have to ride out before you get to the point where it can be enjoyable. Thats why most people never get into it - they never get past the discomfort zone.
