Small touch, big money Gibbs' consideration for Randle El's wife sealed $31 million deal

BY PAUL WOODY

TIMES-DISPATCH STAFF WRITER Mar 14, 2006

The final touch that told Antwaan Randle El Washington was the place for him was not anything Redskins coach Joe Gibbs said to him, but a request Gibbs made of him.

"He asked to speak to my wife," Randle El said at a news conference yesterday. "She was kind of blown back by that."

Gibbs is an expert at such small touches. And that, plus millions more in bonus money than the Chicago Bears were offering brought Randle El, perhaps the top wide receiver available in free agency, to the Redskins.

As usual, the Redskins were extremely active in the initial weekend of free agency. They not only signed Randle El, they made a trade for another wide receiver, Brandon Lloyd, with the San Francisco 49ers. They bolstered their already potent defense with the signing of Adam Archuleta, a safety who played five seasons for the St. Louis Rams,

They found an every-down tight end in Christian Fauria, an 11-year NFL veteran.

The Redskins already have spent millions of dollars and aren't done.

Yesterday, New York Jets defensive end John Abraham visited Redskin Park, and San Francisco 49ers defensive end Andre Carter reportedly has agreed to terms.

**************************************************

Abraham is the Jets' franchise player, making him an expensive player for any team to sign. The Jets will receive a first-round draft choice as compensation if they decline to match the offer Abraham receives. The Jets, however, have shown interest in Redskins backup quarterback Patrick Ramsey, so the teams might be able to work out a deal.

This is something that I am proud to be a Redskins fan for. The fact that we do not just have good football people running our organization, but good people in general. Our leadership consists of some top-notch human beings.

I have to second that. And it's not just Gibbs. Think back to the story that Renaldo Wynn told about how Danny's wife stayed with Wynn's family and traveled back to Washington with them after Wynn broke his arm.

That's the kind of stuff that really builds and feeds on itself and becomes part of a winning culture.

So Gibbs is trying to kick it to Randle El's wife?

I am just kidding, I did see that part of the press conference and that just shows how much class JG has. Of course we have no idea what they talked about, I can only imagine that Gibbs assured her about the schooling in the DC area and that the Redskins would take care of their family's well being.

Its a great year to be a Redskin fan! HAIL

can you see parcells ever doing that ? gibbs is the man you would wish to be your father in law. he just exudes class and honesty

Gibbs is a good Christian and genuinely cares about other people. This, and the fact he is a football genius, are two of the biggest reasons why players are signing w/ us (the big contracts don't hurt either), and why we have a core group of guys willing to sacrifice everything for this team.

Did you guys watch that press conference?

I think it is hillarious to watch Joe Gibbs speak. He is so giddy and goofy trying to name every member of Randel-El's family. All smiley and just plain good mannered.

It is really amazing how Gibbs is able to bridge the generation gap when his personality is so different than virtually anybody else's in sports.

Well, I am a little worried about our "core" group. Don't get me wrong, I get excited like everyone else here when we sign these new guys; but these are established players with high expectations to be playmakers. The thing is, there will not be enough to go around. I know Saunders assured Randel-El, but I can't help but feel uncomfortable.

Last year we had such a great chemistry on our team. It seems there is quite an overhaul this season, and I am a little worried.

Obviously I hope it all works out, but I am worried we will hae a locker room melt down.

You are right to be concerned, but I think these guys will contribute. They don't have money issues to gripe about, El and Lloyd will get the ball enough in Saunders system. Fauria is a stand-up guy and team leader. All we really did was add two new starters on D, and two on offense. We should be fine, after all, we have the greatest coaching staff in the NFL.

Great points!

However my glass is always half-full! In my eyes, I see all these players starting to gel fast. The ball will be spread around so some games players will have more catches than others.

This is way more weapons than Saunders is used to so I see him going crazy with the play calling and we will see some sick trick-plays and a lot of WR screens!

Lets just keep up the wins!

Keep worrying....just like 2 years ago when we added all those players and were not supposed to have a decent D because they needed time to gel....We found out what a genius GW was that year.....Al is in the same predicament this year....We seem to answer challenges with JG here.

That is something I have noticed about all of JG's press conferences. The first thing he does is introduce the player, but the second thing he does is welcome the wife, kids, whatever. Like he said at the Lloyd press conference today, he welcomed the wife and said to Brandon, "we have a football term, and it's that you outpunted your coverage." Of course, everyone has heard the joke 1,000 times, and everyone laughed on cue like they were supposed to, but it was still great. It's almost like we didn't just take the player, we took the family. And everyone is as welcome and as equal as everyone else. It's fantastic.

That kind of stuff will reflect. I just love it. It's still the NFL, it's all about business and money and who offers the most cash, but at the same time, we still have this little small-town familyish feel as well. I can't talk enough about it. I can only hope Williams and Saunders are listening and retaining and can keep it going. But who knows if they have that kind of personality. I hope if they don't, they can learn it. Just pure class, and most importantly, pure GOOD. Good people, good hearts. Gibbs brought it back. And I so hope it will continue after he is gone.

God, I love this team and this organization!

I love how Gibbs is a giant kid in certain situations. His giggles and mannerisms are hysterical. He is as excited as we all are and it shows. I love that about him. Granted I love my grandfather, if Gibbs were willing to take the grandfather job, I would have to think about it. Of course, I'm pretty sure my grandfather would kick my arse if I didn't take the opportunity to be Gibbs' grandson.

HAIL!

All the reasons stated above contributed to his bronzed bust being placed in the hall of fame. The man is a complete class act. If any of us want to know what it takes to be successful in life, just take a look at the guy. I mean he is completely selfless, humble, and good natured. I saw him at the Randle El news conference trying to name Randle El's entire family...he stumbles over the name of one of his daughters and Randle El corrects him and you would think he got one of his own player's names wrong, he was genuinely sorry about it and he has known the guy all of about 2 days. Joe commands respect because he gives it to everyone he meets, the guy is amazing. He bridges the generation gap with his players by simply being himself, a true professional and quality human being in every sense of the word. It's not a coinsidence that he's achieved the ultimate goal in both Nascar and the NFL, he surrounds himself with the smartest people and gets the most out of them because they want to earn his respect. When you see Coach Gibbs working twice as hard as anyone in the room and he's the only guy who's already in the HOF, already has 3 superbowls, and has done everything in his life the right way, it makes you want to please him, you can't bear to let someone down who is so invested in the team for all the right reasons. Man this is going to be a special season....Joe Gibbs is my hero. :notworthy
